Mbappe has been accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Sweden.

In Sweden they are confirming it is definitely him and they've reported on it because they feel it's in the public interest. The woman went to get medical attention and reported the incident straight after. AIBU to be a bit shocked if true? I know everyone will say what do you expect and don't look up to footballers etc, but I'm a woman who enjoys watching football and it's so disheartening how many footballers end up assaulting women. I thought Mbappe was maybe one of the good ones. Hope it's not true, but if it is, that there will be justice for the victim. Apparently Sweden has some of the best laws regarding rape on the planet, so that is encouraging at least.

Kylian Mbappé reacts with fury at Swedish reports of rape claim

Swedish prosecutors say a rape investigation had been opened in Stockholm without mentioning Kylian Mbappé, following media reports that the France captain and Real Madrid star was the suspect

I'm not sure why you'd be shocked, he's a top-level footballer. The surprise comes when one goes through their entire life without being found to be a rapist/child abuser/domestic abuser/love cheat or various other things. Power and status brings opportunity to abuse. Footballers are not in a position of power and of having status because of any inherent "goodness" of character, they are people - often with less than ideal backgrounds - who have better than average ability at kicking a ball about.

Obviously innocent until proven guilty.

Edited

I have no knowledge of this allegation or whether Mbappe had raped anyone but there will be far more top level footballers that are decent family men than rapists and abusers.

Sadly I'm never really shocked or surprised when another rape or sexual assault or nonce story comes out about a celebrity. I don't think there's many celebrities I'd respond with anything other than weary resignation to anymore.

Its a fucked up state of affairs isn't it when this kind of thing isn't surprising when you hear it. Weary resignation sums it up perfectly 😒

I'm not sure about far more top level footballers being decent family men. I would think most of the highest earning ones have cheated on their wives/girlfriends. That's not being decent family men.

If he is named, he should be charged or there should be an application for him to be extradited to Sweden.

As for their laws on this, they dropped the cases against Julian Assange which does not fill me with confidence about justice. Time since the offence should never be grounds not to pursue justice.

YABU. I don't know anything about Mbappe but it's weird to think you that someone you think is "nice" couldn't have a dark side

Rapists and abusers are often superficially far more charming than most fundamentally decent people.

My old swim coach was very predatory, he also raised loads of money for charity locally and everyone thought he was amazing.

I saw my abusive ex gently helping an elderly lady to her seat at the theatre the other week, like he was kindness personified. Even I found it hard to connect the seemingly caring and patient man with the man who screamed vile abuse at me and refused to take me to hospital when I was desperately ill with hyperemesis

I don’t have a hatred of females nor am I dehumanising women, I am simply speaking of this case and not all cases, hence me saying female and not females!!

As a female and a rape survivor I don’t agree that females crying rape is rare, it’s simply not statically reported.

Speaking of this case only, as I said innocent until proven guilty.

Yeah women often refer to themselves as ‘a female’.

You can disagree with statistics as much as you want, but you have no evidence.

My own personal experience, personally and professionally, is why I don’t agree that it’s rare.

Crying rape does happen and in most cases nothing happens to the accuser even when there is clear evidence that the accuser has lied and the accused was innocent.

I’m out of this discussion, I ave no more to say on this OP or the topic of rape.

You are correct that many of the women (females is also acceptable) who've made false rape or sexual assault allegations have had no criminal action taken against them however this is changing thankfully, a woman was jailed a few years back for false rape allegations, I can't remember the details but it was a huge turning point.

Police and prosecution services appear to take a much more serious view of it these days as they should.

Unfortunately this isn't the site on which you will be able to have a genuine discussion and have your point heard.

Evidence?

whatkatydid2014 · 16/10/2024 14:01

You just don’t really know who will or won’t commit any given crime. If anything being rich and famous probably gives you more opportunities to rape some young woman you meet at a club than the average man on the street and I’m sure many men who are rich and famous operate on an assumption that they are attractive to everyone and are used to always getting whatever they want. I’d imagine it may also make you more likely to be falsely accused of rape than the average man on the street though.
Rape is a really difficult crime to prosecute. If you want evidence that proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt then testimony from one person saying they didn’t consent to have sex when the other says they did is rarely going to meet that. I think as well that a lot of women (as well as men) still think of rape as being attacked by someone and physically forced to submit. The reality is more like ending up in situations where you feel like you can’t say no because of the way a man is behaving and being afraid of the consequences if you try and stop or being so very socialised to “be kind” and not to be firm and direct that you are trying to say no politely and not being listened to. It’s a real power imbalance and I feel like that’s often not properly acknowledged and instead we just question why women were not clearer they didn’t want sex.
