Wynn Evans and Katya Jones “hand incident”

Can’t see a thread on this.

What is everyone’s view on this? Have spoken to a couple of Strictly fans at work about the seemingly inappropriate touching of Katya by Wynne and am massively disappointed that many think it was harmless and the reaction is disproportionate.

Just sick of pervy men! He did it on camera! He only cared about getting a quick thrill

She has obviously been told to say that.

Did you watch the interview?

NamechangeRugby · 14/10/2024 19:44

I'm talking about the Louis Walsh clip above, for the avoidance of confusion.

Why are people ignoring Katya herself who has said it's total nonsense?

www.instagram.com/reel/DBEksdHooUf/?igsh=MTFqNHEzcnZwY25hMA==

Because a handful of people on MN have concluded that she must be lying.

snowwhat · 14/10/2024 19:51

An aside, but I was watching Who Do You Think You Are? with Shirley Ballas the other day and I was struck by how she immediately hugged and kissed every historian/expert/archivist she met on the show on the cheek when first introduced. I would/could never do that as I hate touching people/being touched (especially strangers!), but it seems dancers have their own etiquette around touching/err on being more touch-feely in life

But why? What happened to #webelieveyou? Or is that only for when they say there's been SA?

offyoujollywelltrot · 14/10/2024 19:53

She moved his hand, she didn't like it, he moved it back regardless. He was out of order.

Listen to Katya talk about it. She says otherwise.

snowwhat · 14/10/2024 19:56

The high-five thing really is a running joke - she leaves him hanging each week - both their reactions were OTT and it was a planned joke. Straight afterwards she 'rejects' him, she holds his hand over her shoulder and they look friendly.

I've watched the the tummy touch a few times - it is weird, especially when it's been slowed down as it makes it seem mega creepy. However, if you look at Wynne's face, it looks he was trying to tickle Katya/make her giggle. It looks like an unplanned and badly judged joke.

But the touchy-feely ness of SCD is ridiculous and should be curtailed - Sarah and Vito are always canoodling for no reason and Pete and Jowita are all over each other. It just creates gossip and scandal and is a massive distraction.

Findingthissohard · 14/10/2024 19:57

As I watched it on the tv, his hand stays in the same place but her shoulders move over to the right. So my interpretation was that she moved over which moved his hand further onto her stomach rather than on her side. Did anyone else think that?
either way if she is not comfortable she was right to move him.

Timelash · 14/10/2024 20:02

I think it’s a storm in a teacup driven by overinvested viewers and the media desperate for click-bait content.

Both the people involved have said it was a joke. You might not think it’s very funny (“in” jokes very rarely are to a wider audience) and might not believe them, but short of strapping them to a lie detector you’ll never know. So rather than refuse to believe it, I’ll take it at face value until one of the two confirms otherwise.

Because if she admitted that she felt uncomfortable during the incident then it would have to be taken seriously and may even end with him being booted off the show, she probably didn't feel it was serious enough to make a big deal of it when she quite aptly shut it down at the time, and she has obviously underestimated the general reaction would be.

Also, it's quite obvious from that clip that she is smoothing things over, otherwise she would have explained what the inside 'joke' is... it's not a joke, he moved his hand on her, it made her feel a little uncomfortable so she dealt with it.. if it was a joke she would probably have dramatically slapped his hand and looked faux shocked, instead of subtly moving it away and looking uncomfortable.

No one would 'joke' about something like this in front of millions of people.

If that's the case, she has shown what is more important to her - to work for a show for fane and money when she has to compromise on boundaries and respect. She is a grown up woman and she has made that choice, so matter is settled.

I have no idea why...

Bitter people.

Can't accept the truth.

Love a bit of drama.

No life of their own.

It's a MN thing when a man is involved, in most cases on MN it'll be assumed the man is in the wrong..

WillowTit · 14/10/2024 20:03

i think he mistakenly moved his hand too far, doesnt know the protocol

This article sums it up pretty well and is a good analysis of how a non-event has been made into something:

I don't think it's necessarily a big deal that he put his hand on her waist, given that they all stand in couples with arms around each other. Fine for her to move his hand back a bit too obviously.

What I really don't understand is that they've said it was a joke? What's the joke?

Heresoneimadearlier · 14/10/2024 20:22

It’s not just dancers, in every day life now everyone seems to try and hug you, it’s totally inappropriate to go in for a hug, not everyone is a hugger.

The joke is the high five I think. They're addressing one aspect but not the other.

I have big boobs. That hand would have felt uncomfortably close to my breasts. There is no way that that incident and the not high-fiving him were ‘inside jokes’…

Agreed. How are either of those things inside jokes?! Smacks of damage limitation in the wake of all the strictly controversy.

Superhansrantowindsor · 14/10/2024 20:30

I don’t get the touchy feely aspect of strictly either. They have known each other a couple of weeks and yet they are all over each other acting like they’ve been friends since birth. It’s so OTT and tbh seems fake.

Oh ok thankyou.
Maybe it will be spoken about again on Saturday night in the clip before they dance.

Famous. Not eminent. Nobody's expecting them to cast Chris Witty and Mark Rylance, just people that a decent proportion of the audience would have heard of.

By comparison with some previous contestants who haven't even had their own Wikipedia page, or are only famous for being someone else's wife/son/daughter, the bloke from the Go Compare advert who's had a daily show on Radio Wales for years and performed many of the greatest leading roles in opera in the top opera houses in the UK is both famous and legitimately talented.

Tilly Ramsey anybody?

Samcro · 14/10/2024 20:52

I wonder what will happen next. How can he carry on on the show?
social media and mumsnet have decided he is guilty.
so either he will walk or be in the dance off.
all very tiresome.

They seemed determined to move on, it seemed to me. Katya addressed it, clarified her feelings, then they talked about the next dance.
