Anyone else just wish these xl bullies would disappear?

I know I’m not the only one and don’t think I am being unreasonable tbh but didn’t know where else to post this.

In the past week or so there have been five serious attacks in the UK but what we have plastered all over the news is the police apologising to a deluded xl bully owner, when he’s the one who failed to do as he’s told.
What kind of message does that send?

The other day armed police were called to Stockport because of a dangerous dog and three people were injured. There’s only one little article about it in the Star. When did this ever used to happen in this country? It’s not normal.

I just don’t see why normal, decent people should have to live in fear of these scumbags and their dangerous dogs. Nothing is being done, how can something be banned if there are exemptions?
When the dogs do attack, the owners get months in prison which is the equivalent to a slap on the wrist.

It’s like being in possession of something worse than a loaded gun or a lion. Nobody’s allowed pepper spray though - you can get 4 years in prison just for carrying it apparently.
If they at least increased the jail time maybe that would deter people from owning these dangerous dogs.

Any dog bred for muscle has no place in a domestic environment. It would be a better world if they were all PTS and the current dangerous dogs legislation and no breeding should carry over to a lot of breeds that have no purpose today and have a realistic chance of fighting.

PennyCrayon1 · 14/10/2024 09:57

Why would you have a pet that you couldn’t overpower though? Like it’s not even a case of not leaving your child unattended with the dog. If the dog goes for the child you’re fucked because you couldn’t actually do anything to stop it. Even if you’re in the room watching it.

it blows my mind that people choose to have dogs like that in their children’s homes.

Toomanysquishmallows · 14/10/2024 10:00

@PennyCrayon1 , I agree

lastgreat · 14/10/2024 10:01

My 5 year old had something that looked xl bully like, but maybe slightly smaller, jump up at him yesterday and chase in the park. It started nipping his t shirt. He has minor scratches and luckily nothing else. The owner was a perfectly respectable looking woman who just couldn't control it. Why do people have these big strong dogs they can't control?!

Yep, the average XL bully weighs more than me and I’m on a diet. And that’s not chonk on a bully, it’s muscle. If one goes for your child, you have no hope of stopping it, short of trying to kill the dog.

I know my poodle cross could go for you, all dogs can snap and turn, just you could probably kick my dog and clear the posts. (Please don’t, I love my yappy fluffball.)

Sorry if this feels like an attack on you - but another interested in the mindset, did you research the breed and risks before buying or was it you knew your friend and the puppy’s parents?

Other than size, it seems you were after a very different type of dog - Newfoundlands are personality wise not like XL bullies.

No please ask away. I am completely happy to answer any questions when people are polite about it.

I did do some research yes, I also spoke to a few dog walkers locally who I had seen walk them & 2 dog trainers. All had very similar outlooks on them. I’m not saying this for all XLs but I can comment on my own dog. He is very well trained, I spent a lot of time from when he was a puppy training him, socialising him ect. I am able to give him commands without speaking & only using hand gestures, as can my children. & this is why I am very much, it is the owner not the breed as I have been put into real life situations where I have had to use his training in a proper situation against dogs who totally do not listen to their owners.

chouxchoux · 14/10/2024 10:04

An acquaintance of mine had her dog (2 year old cockerpoo) killed last week by two XLs off the lead. So this has been on my mind a lot the last few days.

I also follow an ex colleague on Instagram who has two young sons (3.5 and 1.5 year olds) and an absolutely gigantic XL bully. She posts a lot about what a softie he is and how she's lost friends because she keeps him unmuzzled in the house with her two young children. I get genuine waves of dread whenever I see her post as I can't help but imagine a day where she's posting about the loss of one or both of her kids, god forbid.

They should all be euthanised IMO. Enough damage has been done.

We have a dog problem in this country.

We take the piss out of the US with their ‘right to bear arms’ but were no better with our destructive dogs.

They kill children FFS.

Not to mention piss everywhere everywhere I go they’re piss puddles up corners of walls on the floor everywhere. The local council created a lovely new promenade along the river where we live and it’s just full of piss stained street furniture where owners let the dogs piss up everything

It’s not always about the owners though some dogs have these traits bred into them and there’s nothing you can do about it
and all dogs can turn . They are not programmable machines or robots
my aunt had a very well trained dog he would follow all commands and was a very loving family pet. One day, while sitting in the front room, he grabbed onto a visitors arm and wouldn’t let go . In front of everyone and out of nowhere. There was nothing physically wrong with him either -he just did it.
dogs have tempers and different emotions, just like humans do
I was in the corner shop about a week ago, and I reached down to pick up a newspaper from the bottom shelf and had a very cute looking sausage dog who
was on the other side of the shop on a lead go absolutely berserk at me . Before that it was placid
it irritated me and scared my daughter . I told the lady owner to control her mutt .
my neighbours XL bully also went for some kids downstairs where I live , until the owner managed to rain it back, and then he started shouting at the children to stop running because it’s angering his dog, I mean wat the fuck. He should not have this dog either. He is a raging alcoholic and the dog often whines all day waiting for him. It’s not a friendly dog however
where I live I am over run with them. I don’t mind dogs though really just fed up with how many of them there are . My dad has a lovely husky and I love her to bits - she behaves like pluto the cartoon dog she’s so silly but I wouldn’t leave my young child alonewith her

dreamer24 · 14/10/2024 10:12

I have an XL Bully and honestly he is the biggest dope and all he wants is for you or anyone to just love him.

Ffs. Absolutely sick to death of reading bullshit like this🙄 They're all the "biggest softie" or whatever until they maul you or your child to death.

I totally agree with you. I wouldn’t leave any children around any dog no matter the size or breed. As everything you have said is true, any dog can turn regardless of the training, I do not leave my children alone with my dog & that isn’t because he’s an XL that’s because I wouldn’t leave them alone in a room with any dog full stop. I am just commenting on my own dog that he is very well trained & isn’t just some mindless monster running around as I think this is the assumption most people have on XLs.

You did do some reasearch and still came to the conclusion it was a good idea to get an xl bully

🤯

and you have children. I am hoping they are at least adult children

Ok but what would you actually do if your dog went for your child, suddenly and without warning? How would you stop it?

DungareesAndTrombones · 14/10/2024 10:23

I really don't like them. My sister is friends with someone who has a massive one and it makes me feel sick when she posts pics of my niece with the dog, minus it's muzzle. When walking my dog I get so anxious that we will be attacked it makes me feel sick.

Does that dog mace type spray work? I honestly do not know what I would do if one went for my dog.

Gr8bolsoffyre · 14/10/2024 10:26

Anyone that chooses an XL Bully as a pet has serious issues.

Onetypeofraver · 14/10/2024 10:18

There is a risk owning any dog in the grand scheme of it. Any dog can maul a child to death, having any dog in a home is a risk. I understand an XL Bully is a strong dog but to me any dog is a risk.

I don’t let people’s opinions of me bother me, life is too short to care what strangers think. I know the type of person I am & who I am, & I'm pretty certain if you saw me in the street without my dog you most definitely wouldn’t put me into the same category as people do when they think of XL Bully owners 🤣

People are totally allowed their opinions & observations, what I hate is when they’re rude about it.

Onand · 14/10/2024 10:27

Destroy every single one of them and give an immediate jail term for breeders or owners who don’t submit them for destruction.

Yesterday I had an extremely disturbing clip on X show up on my feed of 2 attacking a man who died from his injuries. Absolutely horrific. Literally dog versions of lions or tigers.

Anyone who is psychotic enough to allow them near children should be charged with endangerment.

SlothOnARope · 14/10/2024 10:32

Yanbu OP, they should all be euthanised tomorrow. Real dog breeders breed health and love into their dogs, not hate and rage.

Latest example of many reasons why: last weekend a thug owner was sitting in my local park cafe, watching his off-lead XL monster attack another dog that was on a lead. He just sat drinking coffee then started shouting at the poor woman whose dog was being mauled that it was her fault for her dog being on a lead?? These people are making life unliveable for everyone else. This appears to be the mentality of the average XL Bully owner, for choosing to own a creature bred purely to scare, intimidate, attack and kill and then bleating about how harmless they are. It is always someone else's fault, even when you are blatantly in the wrong.

But putting them to sleep won't solve the problem completely. British attitudes to dogs in general need to evolve and laws urgently need to be changed. Licences, signs in parks, bans, police giving a shit. All these things need to happen.

How I have learnt to get an attacking dog off my own dog.

But again, this is something we should be asking any dog owner of a big breed should it not be? What would you do if your Cane Corso, Rottweiler, Doberman, American Bulldog, German Shepherd, Bull Mastiff ect. Attacked a child? As all these dogs are big and all can out power a human realistically.

I absolutely would ask that question of any large dog owner to be honest.

I don’t think you have an answer.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 14/10/2024 10:36

I do not leave my children alone with my dog & that isn’t because he’s an XL that’s because I wouldn’t leave them alone in a room with any dog full stop.

What do you think you'd be able to do by being in the room, if your dog decided to attack?

I agree with PPs that I wouldn't ever have a pet I couldn't physically overpower if it came to it. Yes a chihuahua could attack a child - but I could also pick it up and throw it across the room (obviously I'm talking about a situation where it attacked, I'm not just throwing dogs for fun).
The videos you see of XL bullies attacking they don't even seem to notice, let alone stop, if a fully grown man grabs them or hits them with something.

Ebeneser · 14/10/2024 10:39

If it wasn’t the XL Bully it would be another breed of dog (I think next bad breed/status dog is going to be the Cane Corso). I do think Britain has a dog problem in general (I say that as a dog owner). Far too many people are getting dogs that can’t provide them with the time/training/space/exercise they need.
