I'm just curious really!

Mine is £99 combined direct debit per month based on estimated use and I'm in credit which is handy for over the winter.

3 bed house, two adults, one child.

I'm just wondering if what I'm paying is about average.

£80 per month gas and electricity, also in credit 3 bedroom semi . 3 adults 2 children .

Frowningprovidence · 13/10/2024 17:42

£188. 3 bed with 4 of us. We do have credit.

murasaki · 13/10/2024 17:44

£77 combined with British gas, two adults, two bed terrace. I'm in credit, but not as much as I was.

DoublePeonies · 13/10/2024 17:46

Well, OFGEM reckon the average house will spend about £160 a month at the moment.
So, yours sounds quite cheap, and you are likely to find many spending more than you.
We're around £150/month.

sparkellie · 13/10/2024 17:48

153 a month dd. No idea if I'm in credit or by how much as the smart meter doesn't work and despite being aware for the last year they haven't been out to fix it. I got sick of chasing it last year after my partner died. At some point I'll just phone via citizen's advice and make a complaint.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/10/2024 17:49

It's impossible to compare without knowledge of the size of the house, number of people living there, and whether you like it cool 18° or toast 24°.

Rollercoaster1920 · 13/10/2024 17:51

That seems cheap. So much depends on the thermal efficiency of the house, and how heated and what you cook with though.

We (4) pay 70 per month covered, but have solar panels which are worth approx 500 per year. Heating, water and hob are gas. House is insulated but has some draughts. A solid wall victorian place the danger size would be much more to heat

Panicmode1 · 13/10/2024 17:52

£212 a month. 4 bed, 3 storey Edwardian semi, which leaks heat. We are a family of 6 but 2 are away at uni in term time.

We haven't even got the heating on yet, but we have about £600 in credit so should be ok through the winter....

NotSayingImBatman · 13/10/2024 17:53

4 bed detached new build with two adults, two kids and an electric car. We spend £170/month, year round. We’re going into the winter with roughly £500 credit, ready to crank the heating up.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 13/10/2024 17:54

We pay £200 a month for a four bed house with two adults and two teenagers - but that includes the power for the car.

Tristar15 · 13/10/2024 17:57

£125 combined, was £20 in credit in September so did have ‘debt’ to pay of throughout summer rather than building up credit. House is large, old and cold but I feel like the heating is hardly on! One hour in the morning and between 2-3 hours in the evening. Set to 18 or 19 depending on how chilly it is. DD had regular shallow baths (7 yr old) and I shower once or twice a day. Oven / hob are electric, no gas fire.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/10/2024 17:57

£200 DD have some credit at the moment but that will go over winter. I've decided I'm just not being cold anymore, last winter we ended up with condensation etc and the house becomes difficult to get warm. Edwardian 3 bed semi, high ceilings.

We're in a very fortunate position that we can afford to prioritise our wants, I'm not frivolous we've got oodies and an electric blanket on the bed, I'm use the slow cooker rather than have the oven on, and if I've got it on there will be a chicken for lunches, a lasagne and a banana bread in there (for example) to make the most of the time it's on. I don't walk around in shorts with the heating on (like I used to in my first flat fifteen years ago!! 🫣)

Sundaymondaytuesdayetc · 13/10/2024 17:57

I'm quite surprised that some pp are paying so little.
I'm by myself in a 3 bedroom end terrace. I've been paying £55 combined per month and I'm in credit.
But when I put my heating on I know that the credit will soon be eaten up and the direct debit will be increased. And I usually put up with temperatures of 13° in the house to keep the cost lower.
Losing the Winter Fuel payment is going to hit me hard this winter.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2024 18:01

My direct debit is £195/month for both
You cant judge from a direct debit payment though as that may be too much or not enough for the usage.

Last month we used £195 electricity and £40 gas. Gas will increase as the weather gets colder. Electricity has been more recently since dh got an electric car

We have a credit balance so it's OK that usage has exceeded the direct debit this month

malmi · 13/10/2024 18:01

Direct debit figures are fairly meaningless really, especially if it's based on estimated usage. You say you're in credit but once you submit an actual reading that could be wiped out overnight. But £99/month does feel low. If you want to see whether your home is energy efficient you could compare the kWh consumption. But again this will be affected by so many factors.

Nolongera · 13/10/2024 18:04

£95 a month, 2 people in a 2 bed semi, we are £300 in credit so not going to skimp over the winter.

It's 5C outside so we have it on now, been a cold month.

CaptainBenson · 13/10/2024 18:13

Interesting to read all the comments so far.

I know the direct debit based on estimated costs isn't an exact science. I do input a meter reading every month though to do my bit to keep their guesses are close as I can.

The house is a 1930s terraced (2 adults one kid). Big 3 bed. Drafty old wooden front door that I add a draft excluder and thermal curtain to every winter. Double glazed. Roof insulation. Up to date boiler.

We don't have the heating on all the time but don't sit shivering either.

sickandtiredof · 13/10/2024 18:15

£400

mumbruh · 13/10/2024 18:19

5 bed house here
Monthly we spend
£80 on elec and ranges in time of year from £20-£60 on gas

Dolallytats · 13/10/2024 18:19

Blimey, I'm in a 2 bed flat and pay £175 and have no credit on the account. I'm also very stingy with the heating. Time to look at price comparisons, I think.

ByMerryKoala · 13/10/2024 18:58

4 bed detached with five people and an electric car, and I like to keep the house warm. We'd be paying about £260/month if we didn't have solar panels/ home battery and a time of use tariff. So we pay about £160. And we get about £200 from the feed in tariff. So I suppose that makes it about £145/ month.

Decafflatteplease · 13/10/2024 19:01

6 of us in a 3/4 bed Victorian semi here so 12 foot high ceilings!

We pay £225 a month DD and our current costs are around £120 but we've put the heating on now so it will go up.

Sayithowiseeit · 13/10/2024 19:02

£49pm 3bed semi, 1 adult, a teen and child.

Sayithowiseeit · 13/10/2024 19:02

Should probably mention I don't have gas!

ByMerryKoala · 13/10/2024 19:04

Some of these figures are so low. Once you account for the standing charges you must be barely using any power at all
