I'm just curious really!

Mine is £99 combined direct debit per month based on estimated use and I'm in credit which is handy for over the winter.

3 bed house, two adults, one child.

I'm just wondering if what I'm paying is about average.

I pay $120 AUD a month for electricity and $40 for gas. So about 80 gbp a month for a five bedroomed house with pool. I am in Oz though and have solar panels and power costs here are low in WA. We could make it lower, tumble drier is on every day and we have three fridge freezers, multiple tvs. Our usage goes up in winter as we use a heater then, air con in
n summer etc is covered by the solar in day time hours. That’s for three people, and we will get $700 in cost of living electricity credit this years too, so I am in about $600 credit at the minute.

Niceeyessweetheart · 14/10/2024 06:44

£400 DD and we're £1500 in credit to get us through the winter. During the coldest months we were spending £650 a month on gas and electric.
We have a 5 bed Victorian house which is generally cold. We also have an electric car but we do have solar as well.

Westfacing · 14/10/2024 06:52

No wonder the energy companies are raking it in with so many posters having large amounts of credit sitting in someone else's bank account!

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 14/10/2024 06:57

4 bed semi, 3 of us, one wfh permanently. Heating only on morning and evening for a couple of hours, set to 18.5. DD was £220 but I upped it to £270 as we were using around £400 a month last winter and had no credit. It's always chilly, but refuse to use more energy than we are already using. Oodies and hot water bottles are used daily.

Is everyone paying by direct debit? I’ve just moved house and most of the providers want to sign me up to direct debit but I’d rather pay the bill as I go, also Martin Lewis advises against paying by direct debit.

I pay by DD as you get a tiny discount, but keep an eye on the amount and don't let credit build up, which Martin Lewis also advises! Paying the bill as you go means at least the companies aren't sitting on any of your money.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 14/10/2024 07:01

Two bedroom flat. I pay quarterly by bill, which is £50 a month maximum. However - it's a 1737 property and I rarely put the heating on as it flies out of the sash windows. So it's all electricity and hot water for one adult.

coffeesaveslives · 14/10/2024 07:17

£86 per month combined, two adults in a 1920's style terrace.

Augustus40 · 14/10/2024 07:36

£40 fixed gas. Electric is variable between £70 and £90 but I do work at home.

johnworf · 14/10/2024 07:39

Our DD is variable depending on what we use. We don't accrue credit for the energy suppliers to enjoy!

Currently spending around £60 electric and £30 gas (including standing charge and VAT) per month. But we're switching this week to a cheaper tariff with another supplier. No solar (yet) or batteries but we do have an EV.

Shop around for the best deal!

Yellowcarrot · 14/10/2024 07:55

We pay £100 DD for gas and electric year round. We’re over £600 in credit as we have solar panels and batteries and have made money over the summer from exporting (not as much as last year though!). The credit will see us through the winter. We have the heating on all the time (thermostat) and use a tumble dryer. 4 bed detached house with 2 adults 2 children.

Didimum · 14/10/2024 08:04

£278 a month. We’re £400 in credit. 4 bed, 2 bath Victorian with single glazing.

leafybrew · 14/10/2024 08:06

@Gardenlover121 can't quite match yours but definitely feel like I'm paying more than every other person on this thread.

5 adults living in 4 bedroom semi detached stone built 1930s house. Insulated roof/double glazed windows etc. Paying £190/month (only £100 in credit at the moment). We have the heating on maybe 2 hours max in the evening only.

DH has electric car, and lots of tech stuff in use in house, but still, our bill seems higher than everyone else!! With Octopus and haven't got a smart meter.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 14/10/2024 08:07

£75 a month for both gas/electricity
One bedroom flat

SallyWD · 14/10/2024 08:09

We live in an extended 1930s semi that has a lot of rooms. We pay £225 per month for gas and electricity.

Seymour5 · 14/10/2024 08:20

We’re in our 70s, 3 bedroom 1920s semi, North of England. £170 a month dual gas/electric. We have about £400 in credit. That wouldn’t earn much interest, and DH feels the cold, so we prioritise being reasonably warm. We dress warmly too, those hooded robes are amazing.

FluffBut · 14/10/2024 08:26

£92 combined, 2 bed with single occupant. In credit a few hundred ready for winter, but abroad for 5 weeks so heating will be turned right down and hot water off.

linelgreen · 14/10/2024 08:40

£410 per month for gas and electric 5 beds but we do have heating set to keep house at 20degrees so it cycles on and off all day, We have one electric car and a swim spa so expect the bill to be high.

shockeditellyou · 14/10/2024 08:48

We pay £170/m for electric only, then another £2K a year on top for oil! That said, our electric bill should come down - we weren't paying enough when rates were higher.

TeenLifeMum · 14/10/2024 11:11

Gardenlover121 · 14/10/2024 00:36

@TeenLifeMum no just a 200 year old listed building with very high ceilings. We can’t do insulation re walls as solid stone. Very limited on any other options re listed status. I’d love to hear any suggestions

Councils usually give grants for grade 2 listed insulation (our first house was grade 2… love the look but we moved to newer houses ever since). Might be worth you asking though.

Livedandlearned · 14/10/2024 11:12

£100 combined 3 bed semi with 2 adults.

I like the heating on often as I was sick of being cold in our last house.

Livedandlearned · 14/10/2024 11:13

And £250 in credit from the summer as we have solar panels.

orangetriangle · 14/10/2024 18:07

There is a big difference. Presumably the average must be approx £150 a month as that is the price cap? Not sure if that is how it works.

CloudywMeatballs · 14/10/2024 18:17

I'm in the US, in a warm climate. Our electric bill is close to $500 per month in the summer, nearer $200 in the winter.
Gas is around $150 in the winter, $70 in the summer.

TwistedSisters · 14/10/2024 18:26

I'd love to be paying some of the prices quoted here!

We're on Intelligent Octopus for electricity so get cheap overnight rate. Have oil fired central heating which is approx £100 pm, the electricity is £200 pm. 5 bed detached, electric car, immersion heater, underfloor heating, 2 ovens, tumble dryer etc etc ...
