I'm just curious really!

Mine is £99 combined direct debit per month based on estimated use and I'm in credit which is handy for over the winter.

3 bed house, two adults, one child.

I'm just wondering if what I'm paying is about average.

I'm a very conscientous energy consumer.
Actual use, combined gas & electricity incl. standing charges:
Highest month: Jan - £54
Lowest month: May - £32

I'm with Octopus.

Our dd has just gone up to £870 per month 😦 I am horrified. But we were in debit so that will pay it off but then I reckon circa £500-600 per month

Is your heating on constantly. If that’s where you want to spend your money, that’s your choice, but that does seem exceptionally high.

6 bed detached here and only spend 150 combined. I am a bit stingy with heating during the day (work from home and it seems wasteful just to keep little old me warm). But still - yours does seem mega. Have your provider definitely got it right - not checked the wrong metre or something?!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 13/10/2024 21:19

£50 electricity and £15 gas, 2 adults in a 3 bed victorian mid terrace, neither working so home all day.
Electricity was set by them at £32 when i fixed for 12 months as we were so much in credit, but i bumped it up to make sure tumble drier use etc was covered as we go in to winter.
Will get £150 credit for warm home discount sometime before March.
Gas we are over paying, since the central heating doesn';t work as boiler packed in over a decade ago and couldn't be replaced without re piping the whole house and moving boiler to a different room as it broke newer safety laws by being in a bedroom, and we couldn't afford the work, so just don't have heating or hot water.
Thankfully shower is electric, only thing gas is the hob, which is rarely used as it doesn't work properly and isn't really safe tbh, but again, can't afford to replace.

MrsSunshine2b · 13/10/2024 21:24

£109pm for both, 3 bed terrace with 2 adults and 1 child. About £250 in credit.
I'm slightly sceptical of the number of posters claiming they pay £80pm or whatever, as I know that our energy usage is way below average.

BluebellsareBlue · 13/10/2024 21:25

275 a month combined. 4 bed end terrace with windows that may as well just be holes in the wall. I'm in credit by about 300 at the moment and still haven't turned my heating on. Octopus energy apparently their cheapest tarrif but was significantly behind with shell after they said I wasn't sending in meter readings (with a smart meter!) long fight got nowhere

So you spent £5.50 in additional gas each week, in the dead of winter? I think that's a bit beyond being conscientious - it sounds very uncomfortable. If it's a decision based on the environment, rather than financial hardship, you could rationalise that the fabric of your home has better longevity if it doesn't have to cope with very cold temperatures - and repairing it comes with a substantial carbon footprint?

Only because I CBA adding it up!

£98.33 combined a month. We live in a 2 bed 1960s cottage flat. Sometimes known as a four in a block.

Gardenlover121 · 14/10/2024 00:02

Gosh, sad I appear to have “won” the thread on MN terms as £700 a month. Is anyone near or more than this?

Osirus · 14/10/2024 00:03

£49 gas and electricity combined. 5 bed house. Two adults, one child.

Unless you live in a castle, you need to look at getting insulation. We’re home all day (wfh) and I hate being cold so the heating is on all winter yet it’s still only £148 (and that included the hot tub we no longer have).

AutumnCrow · 14/10/2024 00:23

It's the variation on here that astonishes me.

That and how difficult it clearly is for some posters to access genuine help with necessary energy improvements. I know where I live live all the so-called 'grants' come with strings attached or are otherwise unobtainable.

Gardenlover121 · 14/10/2024 00:36

@TeenLifeMum no just a 200 year old listed building with very high ceilings. We can’t do insulation re walls as solid stone. Very limited on any other options re listed status. I’d love to hear any suggestions

caringcarer · 14/10/2024 01:06

I pay £150 each month throughout the year but only use about £100 in the spring, summer and into autumn. Then use about £170 over Winter months. Over the summer I've got a credit balance of about £460 but I'll use it all over the Winter.

How on earth

Growlybear83 · 14/10/2024 02:18

My husband's direct debit is currently £450 per month for gas and electricity. That's for a draughty five bedroom Victorian housemate.

Plainer · 14/10/2024 02:36

5 bed, 3 storey, newish house, around £280 per month all in. There's always a few of us at home working or studying, so the house always needs to be warm. We cook lots and no one except me seems to know that lights can also be switched off.

rainfallpurevividcat · 14/10/2024 02:45

Not sure how much it's going to be exactly but electricity costs have halved since we had solar panels - this is the first winter though and obviously nowhere near as much sun and light now. It means we have built up quite a good credit.

Last autumn/winter (before having solar panels) it was about £2-300 a month for gas & electric - 4 bed semi detached, 3 adults, two teenagers. More the year before, some months it was over £400. One is away at university now which does make a slight difference too. Was paying about £200 a month but dropped it to £100 not to build up too much credit, have about £600, so will just watch the credit going down over winter and adjust accordingly.

Touty · 14/10/2024 04:42

Is everyone paying by direct debit? I’ve just moved house and most of the providers want to sign me up to direct debit but I’d rather pay the bill as I go, also Martin Lewis advises against paying by direct debit.

Jeezitneverends · 14/10/2024 05:56

£350 combined, 4/5 bed house, 4 adults.

In Scotland, so heating has been on since the last week in September. I always try to get to October without it but I’ve not managed yet, because Scotland

rainfallpurevividcat · 14/10/2024 06:08

Has anyone not had monthly statements recsntly from Octopus? Had nothing since 8th August yet they deduct funds from the credit without saying what the usage was.

highwaysbyways · 14/10/2024 06:12

£400

Ha55leback · 14/10/2024 06:12

4bed detached house. 3-4 adults. £120 a month total with £500 credit we are deciding whether to have back or leave over winter. Dh is very good at managing bills and moving to better deals.

We do, can’t see why you wouldn’t.
