What are your thoughts?

OP posts:

Makes me think of this brand of butter.

I came to energetically say that you were being unreasonable and accidentally clicked that you were not being unreasonable and now that vote is there forever.

I don’t like it OP. But help us understand the issue. Is it that she wants a shortened name or that everyone else has got nicknames?

You can change your vote - just click in the other option. It’s not set in stone.

Ivyy · 13/10/2024 11:37

Teen girls ime often make up nicknames for each other, some cute some funny and some v random. Personally I think lolo is cute if her bestie is calling her that, but does your dd like it op?

If she doesn't then she asks bestie to stop using it, if she does then all good!

Rubyshoosday · 13/10/2024 09:10

It means small or tiny! She’s not bothered by the slang with a different spelling, if that’s what you mean.

Nicknames are spoken and to call a little girl by a widely used slightly vulgar name meaning sexually attractive, is very questionable

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/10/2024 13:07

I think Lolo is a cute name for a baby and I can see teenage girls being called that by their friends. So if her BFF calls her that - then isn't that already her nickname ? I'm pronouncing it low-low.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/10/2024 13:09

I think Lol-lol sounds pretty silly though .

charlotte has an energetic personality

That makes no sense.

as another poster said, it's a diminutive not a nick name . A nick name is like bunny (energiser) or pumpkin,

lolo sounds daft. I prefer Charlie to Lottie

@Bookishnerd

your choice can be easily swapped over as long as the voting is still on. Just choose the other option.

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/10/2024 10:25

As others have said it’s not up to you to choose is it?

I don’t hate Lolo and if she wanted it I would tolerate it. But it sounds a bit porno.

It sound like an inflatable mattress.

thesoundofwildgeese · 13/10/2024 14:05

If the OP's high school aged daughter is so desperate for a diminutive because "everyone else has one" - what's wrong with "Charlie", "Lola" or "Lottie"?

"Lolo" sounds like a toddler who can't say her name properly yet.

Nicknames often evolve and she won't have much control over that.

It might start out as "Lolo", then evolve to "Low-Low"

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/low-low-spread-250g

then "Marge", then "Mardy-pants" etc.

ObelixtheGaul · 13/10/2024 14:08

Haven't rtft so sorry if it's been mentioned, but all I can think of is Lolo Ferrari, the woman with the absolutely huge breasts from Eurotrash.

Mountainpika · 13/10/2024 14:34

If her bestie calls her Lolo and she likes it, then she can settle on that. A nickname doesn't have to be a version of her full name. Other kids will gradually pick up on it. Why are people making such a fuss about it? As to other connotations about the name - so what? It's HER name regardless of anyone else's opinion. If we all rejected names because of certain other connections, there would probabably be very few names to chose from. Good luck to her.

UKAddendum · 13/10/2024 08:55

I have a Charlotte, she chooses to go by Lottie, but is known at home as Lottie Loo, shortened to Loo. LoLo might stick, but in the end, she'll choose herself. Avoid Char!

That’s made me think of LuLu which is easier to say than lolo.

VickyEadieofThigh · 13/10/2024 15:05

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 01:54

yes she wants a nickname as everyone else has one

"Everyone"? I seriously doubt that.

Cotswoldmama · 13/10/2024 15:15

Lolo is awful as others gave said immediately made me think if Lolo Ferrari and euro trash, I think she had the biggest boobs in the world or something and I think she had a tragic death

sanityisamyth · 13/10/2024 15:35

@PearlFawn so why didn't you write it with a capital letter?

Lolo is a stupid bloody nickname.

RobertaFirmino · 13/10/2024 16:01

Has anyone mentioned 'sometimes' as a nickname yet?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/10/2024 16:03

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 01:39

she is in high school and she wants a nickname

Then surely she can choose her own?

Bigcat25 · 13/10/2024 16:10

Don't like it, sounds too much like looko sp, ie, crazy, or short for Lolita. It's far too unserious.

Gonewiththetwins · 13/10/2024 16:12

My name is Charlotte.. I’d have been livid if I got called Lolo sorry!

Family called me Lottie (still do).. some friends and partner Charlie or Charlotte.

Calliopespa · 13/10/2024 16:18

It sounds as if it’s short for Lolita which was a disturbing story about a pervert and a young girl.

I think Nabokov probably chose that name as it sounded like she was sone kind of plaything ( or lollipop?!) . But even if he didn’t, it does.

To top it off, for some reason my breastfed cousin would cry “ lolo” whenever she wanted to breastfeed, and it was basically her word for boob. We all found it hilarious as a name for breasts and it kind of caught on ( maybe because it brings to mind lilos and inflatables generally?) so it’s a big no from me.

Oh really!? Perhaps this is where my little cousin got the lolo for boobs from!!

Calliopespa · 13/10/2024 16:30

Ok so this thread has been revelatory for me. I’ve now discovered a famously big-boobed lady was called Lolo, and also that it is French slang for breasts.

This all leads me to the somewhat disturbing conclusion that what we thought was a sweet and funny quirk of my little cousin was in fact just a very young child repeating what she had been told was the name for breasts. I blame my uncle…

haplessharpy · 13/10/2024 16:32

It's cringey

Tricho · 13/10/2024 16:33

Don't ever go to France if the name Lolo sticks....
