What are your thoughts?

Do all her friends call her Charlotte?

Surely they shorten it. My daughter's names are short but I still shorten them more.

Most friends call her charlotte but her bestie calls her lolo

I misread that as iolo - pronounced like ilo and thought it was really cool: not Lolo so much but iolo?

This is a name in Welsh, but it's pronounced a bit like 'yo-lo' 😁

OP lo-lo sounds too contrived for Charlotte, it sounds silly and I don't think it would work just asking people to start calling her that. What about Charlie, Lotty or Charl?

so she's already known as Lolo. So thats what it is then. Why are you trying to change it?

This thread is odd. Im wondering if the OP is the daughter

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 13/10/2024 07:20

It's cringe to pick your own nickname

So...

If her 'bestie' calls her Lolo.

There you go (lolo).

Tis done.

Why you care??

I disagree with this "you can't choose a nickname as a teen" and "they just evolve".
Some do. My DC are now at secondary and just about everyone still lovingly called Thomas, William, Charlotte or Alexandra by their mother are now called Tom, Will, Char or Al by their peers.
With others, though, it is more a choice. One of DD's gang doesn't have a name with any associated diminutives that she liked so, after a lot of discussion, she is now called sometime entirely unrelated to her name but linked to her hobby. It's worth bearing in mind that most secondary school kids this days will have experience of a few people in their year group expecting their peers and staff to call them by an entirely different name and use different pronouns so a child asking her friends to use a nickname isn't going to be groundbreaking!
Both DD and I have traditional names which have a lot of diminutives associated with them. I didn't particularly like the one I had at school so changed when I went to Uni by the simple step of introducing myself by that diminutive rather than the old one. It means different groups of people know me by different names - and work colleagues know me by my full name - but it's not an issue and I know several people who have done similar. The couple of people from my school who went to Uni with me tended to use the old one but now use both. DD wants to try a different diminutive and is thinking moving to Sixth Form might be a good time to do it. Or she might so it sooner than that. After all, it's not set in concrete for life.

Lifestooshort71 · 13/10/2024 07:26

So, a bit of a reverse in that Charlotte is already being called Lolo! Does mum just want to know if she should let it go or interfere in case it makes her daughter sound like a good-time girl?

Ellie1015 · 13/10/2024 07:34

If her bestie calls her Lolo and she likes it then that's absolutely fine as a nickname.

It isnt an obvious one for Charlotte. But it has come about from a friend is the natural way for nicknames to come about. I like it.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 13/10/2024 07:42

You don't pick your own nickname. I had a friend at secondary who tried this. Her name began with K and she wanted us to start calling her Koko. Just no. None of us did. We thought it was ridiculous. And Lolo is nowhere near a nickname for Charlotte.

3 pages of people saying no it’s not a nice nickname and Op is still defending it - sounds like your mind is made up! Charlotte is a beautiful name, I wouldn’t shorten it. Charlie is a cute Nick though.

It’s not OP’s mind that needs to be made up, it’s her daughter’s. OP is just putting it out there to see reactions.

I don’t think Lolo runs off the tongue easy enough for her friends to use. Someone suggested Lolly which does roll better and of course Lottie.

85reasons · 13/10/2024 07:45

Being are being hard on you OP - I think it's sweet that she's asking you about nicknames as she's being quite naive about it all - but she's a kid - she's allowed to be!

If her best friend already calls her Lolo it might catch on at school, you never know.. although you don't really get to pick what everyone ends up calling you - but you can try!

inattentive38 · 13/10/2024 07:46

Anyone in my school called Charlotte was either nicknamed Char, Charl, or Charlie. But they didn’t choose them, they just happen naturally 😅

sanityisamyth · 13/10/2024 07:47

Is that starting with an i or an L? If an i, it's "yolo" in wales ... I can't see either having much to do with Charlotte, but you only live once ...

LaMarschallin · 13/10/2024 07:50

There's a difference between diminutives and nicknames, imo.
For example, "Robert" may be called by diminutives such as Rob, Bob, Bobby, Bert etc
His nickname, however, may be Pudding Head or something because his friends remember an unfortunate haircut he once had.
I remember a thread here where someone wanted to call their son something - I can't remember; say, Thomas, use a diminutive say, Tommy but wanted his nickname to be Ace.
I wonder how far Tommy got with telling people he was called "Ace" really.

Someone I knew told me her nickname was "the Snow Queen" because she was beautiful and also not easy to get into bed. An acquaintance of hers said she was actually known as the School Bike.
I just called her by her given name.

"Lolo" is apparently already called that by her bestie.
So she's got a nickname.
Good.
If she wants her other friends to call her that, she should tell them.
Of course, the other friends may cheerfully tell "Lolo" to get over herself and give her a nickname like Pretentious Pants. That's how nicknames work.

Eta My name here is LaMarschallin, sometimes gets shortened to LaMar, but I'd like you all to call me by my nickname of BeautifulWonderfulPoster.

she is in high school and she wants a nickname

If she is in high school and starts asking her friends to call her LoLo she will have the piss ripped out of her.

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 01:39

she is in high school and she wants a nickname

Nicknames normally happen organically, surely?

My name is Charlotte and if someone called me Lolo I don't think I'd make the connection that they were calling me 😂

Over the years the main nicknames I've had are -

Charl, Char, Charlie, Lottie and Lotts.

JaninaDuszejko · 13/10/2024 08:01

Gen Z operate by different rules to older people when it comes to names. My DN changed her name in her early 20s to something very close to her original name. My DD's friends have changed their names multiple times. So one girl used her initials then went back to her full name at 6th form. Another used a unisex name for a while and now uses a shorter version of her birth certificate name. All friends were very accepting of the changes in each case. So I am sure that Charlotte will be able to change her name and it will be accepted. She just needs to choose something she likes.

Char, Charley, Lola, Lotta, Lotte, and Lottie are suggested by Google's AI.

So she already has a nickname? So why are you discussing it? And posting on mumsnet about it?

DCIGeneHunt · 13/10/2024 08:05

Sorry, but Lolo Ferrari was my first thought too.

Please look that up!!

BeardieWeirdie · 13/10/2024 08:06

It’s an old bloke Welsh name - and not in a Bobby/Mabel way.

PurpleChrayn · 13/10/2024 08:06

Lolo Ferrari Blush

KimberleyClark · 13/10/2024 08:08

Sally derives from Sarah. How about Chally?

TheBirdintheCave · 13/10/2024 08:09

My friend's nickname is Lolo! It seems normal to me, quite surprised with everyone saying it's strange 🤷🏻‍♀️ Her name isn't Charlotte but it's also not a name that you'd think Lolo was a natural nickname for.
