What are your thoughts?

Also, I have to say that I think Gen Z choosing their own NN is far better than the dreadful insistence by many English people to shorten a long name whether or not the person whose name it is actually wants it shortened. I know several people who insisted on the long form of their name once they went to University or started work because they hated the nickname they had foisted on them at school.

My friend's nickname is Lolo! It seems normal to me, quite surprised with everyone saying it's strange 🤷🏻‍♀️ Her name isn't Charlotte but it's also not a name that you'd think Lolo was a natural nickname for.

Is it Penelope?

Usernamerequired123 · 13/10/2024 08:17

Lolo is a popular name in a south Asian culture - and there is a 90s actress in Bollywood who had this nickname.

Google Bollywood lolo images and you'll see.

Barleycat · 13/10/2024 08:18

Lol O or low low? Not that it makes a difference, they're both awful but was curious. Also nicknames evolve naturally.

I don't know how I've never noticed before that Charlotte contains the word Harlot.

Let her friends call her whatever they want, but a version of Lottie ,/ Lotz is nicest.

BeardieWeirdie · 13/10/2024 08:20

You’re now saying it starts with an L but have written Iolo with an I in your title!
Anyway, Lolo sounds stupid. Call your daughter the lovely proper name you’re given her if Charlotte is on the birth certificate.

oakleaffy · 13/10/2024 08:20

HighlandsExpat · 13/10/2024 01:44

Lolo doesn't make sense to me... someone will ask what her real name is and you'd assume it would be something like Lolita or Louise. Definitely not Charlotte!

Lolo sounds ludicrous.

Like Low Loader.

Nicknames happen and one can't choose them.

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 01:39

she is in high school and she wants a nickname

Nicknames evolve under their own steam. You don't choose one. That's the whole point of them.

And if she is high school age, then a nickname would most likely come from her peers.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/10/2024 08:22

TheChippendenSpook · 13/10/2024 01:23

Don't nicknames just 'happen' ? It doesn't sound great and probably won't catch on.

This. I don’t understand planning nicknames

"Lolo" is pronounced "Lol Lol"?
Is Charlotte's/Lolo's bestie taking the piss a bit?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/10/2024 03:00

She might get nick named Lilo Lil (character in Bread)

Not good.

By who?? I'm 40 and too young to have ever watched Bread. Wikipedia finished when I was 8. I very much doubt it's being used as a cultural reference by today's high school kids, or their parents.

OP nicknames are supposed to evolve, not be picked out of the air in teens. How does your DD plan to communicate her new name? Some kind of announcement?

ThinWomansBrain · 13/10/2024 08:25

why name the child Charlotte if you don't want to call her that?

Lovelynames123 · 13/10/2024 08:25

Nicknames should be organic...I've been called all sorts over the years, Loopy Lu, juicy lucy, Cindy, Willers, all gifted by friends😂 I choose to just go by a very shortened version now, and many people don't even know my full name

If she was my friend I'd probably call her Carlotta, like I call my friend Emily, Emzels, my pal Karen, Kazarella, my Saturday girl Amber, Ambies etc

She won't be able to force them to use a name of her choosing but she could encourage them to make something up for her themselves

RuthW · 13/10/2024 08:27

I know a few Charlies and they get called Charles. Bit ironic really as it should be the other way round but Charles is shorter than Charlie.

Pronounced Lol Lol

How is it pronounced Lol lol when there's no L on the end of Lola?

This writes like the teenage daughter writing this.

KickAssDrinkMilk · 13/10/2024 08:36

The thing about nicknames is you can’t really control them once children go to school.

my name is Charlotte and my mum always hated “char” but that’s what I was for years with my friends

over the years I got:
Char
Charlie
Chocolate (like Charlie and the factory)
Shallott (like lady of)
Lady (again like of shallot)
M’lady (boys thought this one was hilarious)
Onions (like shallot)
Lotts (like lottie)

Stillnormal · 13/10/2024 02:00

I misread that as iolo - pronounced like ilo and thought it was really cool: not Lolo so much but iolo?

I read it as Iolo too, I couldn't work out how op had got there!

Lolo is a silly name, I wouldn't thank someone for foisting it on me.

LaMarschallin · 13/10/2024 08:37

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 08:24

What you do mean

Well, "Lolo" doesn't have an L at the end so it's odd to pronounce it "Lol Lol".
I think most people would pronounce it "Low low".
"Lol Lol" seems like someone saying the acronym for "laughing out loud" twice.
If Charlotte/Lolo has told her bestie that she wants a nickname, maybe the bestie hasn't thought "Yup! We Gen Zs change our names all the time as we operate under different rules for names". Maybe she just decided to make a bit of a joke.

Eta Of course, maybe she was just trying to helpfully come up with a shortened form of Charlotte.
Still doesn't explain why "Lolo" should sound like "Lol Lol".

skilpadde · 13/10/2024 08:38

So Lolo is a daft nickname to try to choose (and people keep thinking it's Iolo prounounced Yolo because you keep dropping the capitalisation, OP), but if you / your DD are insistent on choosing it, then please do realise that Lolo is gotting to be pronounced as low-low, or possibly lo-lo (like the start of lollipop twice).

If she wants a nickname that sounds like lol-lol, you're going to need more Ls in the spelling of the nickname. But that would be the least of her problems, as she'd be the butt of jokes. Is her best friend already taking the piss out of her and she's not realised?

Nooooo!
Reminds me of Lolo Ferrari of Eurotrash back in the 90s!
