Am I too old for a Pandora charm bracelet?

I'm touching 40. I wanted a Pandora charm bracelet about 15-20 years ago when either they became really popular or I first noticed them. I didn't bother as they were expensive ish (especially to me, a pauper at the time) and really common.

Anyway, I recently bought my 13 year old daughter one (around the age range I feel they're manufactured for) and I've been completely taken in by their marketing and how good they look on DD, her friends, the store girls all of whom are a good 2,close to 3 decades younger than me and the idea of cute little treats and easy gifts for everyone.

Is it a kids thing and I'm past it or are they still cute? Is there a grown up version? 😂😂😂

I think it's ok to keep and wear one if you've had it from a young age but to buy one now is a bit "live, laugh, love"???

Why do you care? If you want one, get one. Anyone who judges someone based on how 'fashionable' they are deemed to be isn't someone whose opinion I would be interested in anyway.

iNoticed · 11/10/2024 11:42

I’ve had one for ten plus years, I’m in my mid 30e and I wear it every now and then. My mum in her 60s has had hers for 4 or 5 years and wears it every day.

I’ve never perceived it as having an age limit, it’s relatively affordable mass market jewellery with customisation so that it can appeal to a broad range of tastes. I would think absolutely nothing of seeing someone in their 40s having a new bracelet (as in, it would be unremarkable, not that I’d think they were nothing!).

Go for it!

(as an aside I would wear my oxidised bracelet / get new charms for often if it didn’t need re-oxidising about every 6 months as I do love it when it’s newly blackened).

If you like them and it will make you happy, get one. Who the fuck cares what other people think?

Edited

This.

Wow a lot of responses very quickly!

To the people who say they have one - when did you get it? If I already had it, I think I'd proudly wear it but if I buy it now, I feel like I'm trying to be young and cool. I think @lovemelongtime has it.

Nobody who sees you wearing it will know when you got it.

thebinkster · 11/10/2024 11:47

I'm over 60 and I still wear one.

CheerfulBunny · 11/10/2024 11:50

I'm 50 and have two - silver and rose gold. They don't get much love on MN but loads of people have them IRL. You can wear them in different ways - lots of charms at once or just a few as I do. I don't generally wear them day to day as they're worth a few bob (esp the rose gold bracelet and charms) but I like wearing them going out. It's quite nice to get charms as gifts from loved ones and you can occasionally get charms on holiday - I have a Venice specific one for example.

Juicymango · 11/10/2024 11:50

My mil and my husband got me one for my 40th birthday as we've recently bought a house so it had a house charm in it. Best present ever, made cry!!

I'm 70s

I really like mine except the clasps are ridiculous

But MN on the whole, despises them

wwjalme · 11/10/2024 11:53

If you want one get one.
I don't think they are a "young" thing or trying to be cool thing.
I met a 55 year old woman with one just a few weeks ago and she really enjoys collecting charms on her travels around the world.

Who cares what the hell anyone else thinks. People have far too much to say about other people's appearance and fashion choices - if it's not a charm bracelet it's your eyebrows are too thick or too thin, you wear too much make up or not enough, your trousers are too baggy or too tight or the wrong colour.

Just get one!

Gettingbysomehow · 11/10/2024 11:55

You can wear what you want when you want these days.
If you love it wear it. I would.

BobbyBiscuits · 11/10/2024 11:57

There's a slim chance your daughter might be somewhat appalled if you started rocking something very similar to what she wears.
But as someone in my 40s, I'd say go for it. I didn't necessarily perceive it as being solely aimed at teens/20s.
It's not my kind of thing but if it makes you happy, why not? Maybe run it by your daughter though as she's the only one likely to have an opinion!

ImNoSuperman · 11/10/2024 11:57

If you think you're too old for Pandora, what about a charm bracelet from something like Monica Vinader?

Ofalltheginjoints · 11/10/2024 12:00

I'm in my late 30's and have one, got it about 6 years ago as a present from my ex and mine is full is Disney charms, buy new ones when I go to Florida as well as getting some over here. My SIL is in her 40's and got hers for Christmas a couple of years ago she has a mix of charms on hers and wears it most days.

Age is just a number, if you like it get one

DappledThings · 11/10/2024 12:02

I don't like them and fortunately DH knew that and was able to politely dissuade MIL when she mentioned buying me one but there's no age range related to them I'm away of. MIL must have been in her 60s when she got hers.

TicTac80 · 11/10/2024 12:03

Get yourself one if you want one! Why not? It doesn't matter how old you are. I'm in my 40's, my sister is in her 50's. We've bought each other meaningful charms for our bracelets over past 15-20 yrs. I think of my sister when I wear mine. I don't wear mine all the time (I can't wear much jewellery at work), but I will put it on when I'm not working :)

RuthW · 11/10/2024 12:03

They aren't marketed at kids. Get one if you want.

They are a bit dated now though.

Povertytrapped · 11/10/2024 12:08

Ooh @ImNoSuperman the Monica Vinader bracelets 😍now you have started something...

Trinity65 · 11/10/2024 12:10

Buy one,

I don't think there is an age limit for wearing one
If you want one, and can now afford too, then Just Do It ;)

ForBetterForWorseOrNot · 11/10/2024 12:11

Had mine for my 30th from mother in law. Only wear it on special occasions but it's great. Husband knows if he can't think what to get for birthday, anniversary or Christmas he can get a charm.

LostInMyOwnArse · 11/10/2024 12:14

Ameliasvocalfry · 11/10/2024 11:23

What? I've never heard that there's an age limit on charm bracelets! I'm considerably older than the OP and wear one.

The only place I've seen judgment and mocking of them is women on Mumsnet, I know a lot of women in the age group of OP who has one. It's only in here I've seen the idea that they're for children.

On a Xmas thread a few years ago I've seen women refer to them as a working class signifier and mock women and who wear them and say they're actually cheap jewelry for children and not "proper" jewellery for women, personally I would try and wear what you like OP, the type of person who judges and mocks over this type of thing isn't the type of person you want to impress anyway as they'll only pick something else to sneer at.

Well Said

I am WC but do not have a Pandora bracelet.
I do not mock, or judge, those who do though.
I have a nice old fashioned (1980s) Gold charm bracelet personally

ahemfem · 11/10/2024 12:17

If I saw someone wearing a Pandora charm bracelet, "young and cool" would not be the look I thought they were going for.
