DD vomiting bug - A&E?

HighlandCow78 · 07/10/2024 23:05

DD (19) has had really severe diarrhoea and vomiting for the past 24 hours. Can’t keep anything down whatsoever, at this point I don’t know how she even has any fluid in her tummy to vomit - we’ve tried small sips of electrolytes but 10 mins later they come straight back up again. She’s feeling awful - really weak + dehydrated.

Also has a very high temp of 39.5 degrees, again she can’t keep any paracetamol/ibuprofen down to make her more comfortable

AIBU to take her to A&E? Please be kind - I’ve never seen her so ill before and don’t know what to do. I’m concerned that she’s going to end up needing IV fluids as she isn’t peeing and she’s desperately thirsty

No don't bloody take her to a&e and spread this about. Call 111 now.

PollyDactyl · 07/10/2024 23:07

Do you think it is noro?

Curtainpots · 07/10/2024 23:07

How long since she last peed?

whitebreadjamsandwich · 07/10/2024 23:08

No, they wont do anything yet and then she'll just feel like sh*t somewhere other than home. Keep up the small sips, get her to suck some sugary sweets, and see how she is come morning

Do you think it is noro?

Don’t think so - both to my and her knowledge she hasn’t been around anybody with it. Really hope not!

I was thinking more along the lines of food poisoning? She ate some lukewarm reheated rice yesterday - teenagers!! 😩

I’d persevere with tiny sips of dioralyte-she will be absorbing some of it in between being sick. Hopefully it will begin to improve soon

whitebreadjamsandwich · 07/10/2024 23:09

Make icecubes with fruit juice to get fluid and sugar in her

Frozensnow · 07/10/2024 23:09

When my baby had Noro or rotavirus or whatever it was they said that there is usually some fluid intake that does go into the system even if they’re sick a lot. I realise your dd is 19 but I’m thinking the same would apply. I would consider urine output more like a pp has said. Sounds like the rice could be the culprit. Hopefully it passes soon

Just call 111. Its literally what it's there for.

fashionqueen0123 · 07/10/2024 23:09

Can she sip on ice? Get some lucozade. Try with a straw?
if she has a temp after meds or meds that won’t stay down I’d call 111 as a temp isn’t that normal in an adult (like it is with children)

Nibblenose · 07/10/2024 23:10

It sounds like a bad bout of noro, which all being well she'll start feeling a bit better tomorrow. Keep up with the small sips.

LoftLaughLoads · 07/10/2024 23:10

Call 111 and they will work out what to do - follow their instructions.

JC03745 · 07/10/2024 23:11

Keep up the tiny sips. Put some of the electrolyte liquid into ice cube trays for tomorrow. Being icy cold can help hide the salty flavour and sucking it can be more tolerable than sips.

You can buy paracetamol in suppository form from pharmacies. No good tonight, unless there is a late night one nearby, but useful to know for tomorrow.

Littletreefrog · 07/10/2024 23:12

Get her to suck on some ice lollies and keep up with the sips of juice etc she will be getting some benefit from it.

SparklingBettie · 07/10/2024 23:13

The rice has given her food poisoning. My DH had it and it was the absolute worst kind of d&v. Never again have we eaten re/heated rice.

RaiseYourSkinnyFists · 07/10/2024 23:14

I wouldn't rule it out. I've been to A&E with severe vomiting before. People might not think it's that serious but that's a very high temperature and she might need fluids or IV paracetamol.

Your kidneys can start failing if you become very dehydrated so it's worth calling 111 and see what they say.

PollyDactyl · 07/10/2024 23:15

Ah, food poisoning by rice is horrible.

Food poisoning - NHS (www.nhs.uk) see also the link there to the page on treating D and V.

It'll be about a week until she's over it. A and E not needed unless (see list on linked page)

Just spotted that you said she isn't weeing. That's not a good sign. I think she needs looking at.

Lumberingfool · 07/10/2024 23:16

If you pinch the skin on her hand does it take a moment to go flat? If it does, then I might take her for IV fluids if she doesn't turn a corner v soon. In the meantime, ice lollies or tiny sips of dioralyte - a teaspoon at a time, every 5 mins.

Pandasnacks · 07/10/2024 23:16

Contact 111 first

Scutterbug · 07/10/2024 23:16

Poor thing. Get some coke in for when she’s feeling a bit better, flat coke.
I’d be mostly worrying about the not weeing. How long has that gone on for?

Hayley1256 · 07/10/2024 23:19

I hope she feels better, I would put a cool flannel on her head and try sips of lemonade - that's the only thing that helps me when I have that kind of bug

Dotto · 07/10/2024 23:20

Contact 111, but be prepared for a long wait. Try a warm water bottle on the tum, and go to the pharmacy for buccastem anti-sickness tabs in the morning, they sit under the lip and absorbed by the soft tissues. I'd personally see how she fares resting her stomach for an hour or two before trying to sip electrolytes again.

Mostlyoblivious · 07/10/2024 23:23

It sounds that she needs medical attention with such a high fever, lack of urinating, lack of fluids and thirst

LakeFlyPie · 07/10/2024 23:23

Teaspoon of dioralyte every 5 mins, she will absorb that. Then more sips as she can tolerate.
