DD vomiting bug - A&E?

HighlandCow78 · 07/10/2024 23:05

DD (19) has had really severe diarrhoea and vomiting for the past 24 hours. Can’t keep anything down whatsoever, at this point I don’t know how she even has any fluid in her tummy to vomit - we’ve tried small sips of electrolytes but 10 mins later they come straight back up again. She’s feeling awful - really weak + dehydrated.

Also has a very high temp of 39.5 degrees, again she can’t keep any paracetamol/ibuprofen down to make her more comfortable

AIBU to take her to A&E? Please be kind - I’ve never seen her so ill before and don’t know what to do. I’m concerned that she’s going to end up needing IV fluids as she isn’t peeing and she’s desperately thirsty

Sympathies @HighlandCow78 I have had this twice and did loads of research. Bacillus cereus was the cause in my case. I never want to feel like that again. It can actually present two ways (one more sick, one the other end as well 🤯🫣) and a fever as the body tries to deal with the toxin. Heat doesn’t kill this either hence reheating not a good idea.

It is for me when I get norovirus- I don't pee at all as lose fluid from vomit &c

A&E is really not the place.

They won't thank you for causing their staff to be ill, it's hideously catching.

Being dehydrated to the point that you don’t produce urine isn’t normal, nor is it something to gloat about.

Sorry OP @HighlandCow78 - glad yours is settling a bit Flowers Hopefully with some sleep, she'll be feeling much better in a little while.

Thinking of you and your DD! Keep us updated

If you and she can bare it, go to the pharmacy and buy some paracetamol suppositories. They are absolutely amazing in these circumstances. My sone was inclined to vomitting whenever he had a high temperature and it was the only way we could get it down..once administered the change was almost miraculous. Worth the 2 seconds of discomfort x

She was able to keep some oral paracetamol down this morning - thank goodness! It has brought her temp down enough that she feels semi human again. Seeing 40 degrees on the thermometer gave us both a fright, really thought that I was going to have to take her in. Without being TMI I don’t think that a suppository would’ve ended well last night😬

@HighlandCow78 Glad your daughter is feeling better.

Vomiting bugs are so grim.

Electrolytes taste acceptable when one is in real need of them.

ORS soluble tablets are cheaper than dioralyte and taste better for some people.

People on here are absolutely vile.
If my child (regardless of whether they are a few months over being considered an adult or just months old), was unable to hold anything down, was getting weaker by the minute, unable to drink anything, was not passing urine and vomiting until they were turned inside out, yes, like the OP I would be considering getting them medical care, and I don't care what the ohhhh but think of other peeeeeeeople brigade think. Dehydration is dangerous. I was admitted aged 19 with similar to your DD (was campylobacter) and my BP was so dangerously low upon admission that I was hallucinating and unable to say my own name.
I hope your daughter makes a full recovery very quickly OP, and all the others on this thread with poorly kids too. And those who have slated her - I hope you never have to go through the same.

My dad nearly died from dehydration. If anyone had suggested we were being selfish for taking him in when he had an upset stomach I'd have screamed at them.

Totally agree with you.

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 10:55

@AgainandagainandagainSS the initial thinking is always just a normal bug, but when it gets to the point that even a teaspoon of fluid is being rejected and there's no urine output, it's very concerning.

Laiste · 08/10/2024 11:02

Just to reiterate - my mums campo was dismissed as 'just a bug' and she ended up in hospital for 6 weeks.

On balance and looking at it the most emotionless way - it ended up costing the NHS 4 weeks of intensive care and a further 2 eeeks having on a ward because they dismissed a 'sickness bug' for a week .

Absolutely. And you know your kid/dad/self. If in any doubt, I would get them seen. I would rather be sent away with electrolyte sachets rather than blue lighted in the next day because they can’t be roused.

Op's daughter had food poisoning from rice, not noro. Two totally separate things.

If you really don't pee with a stomach bug, you need to be seen. You've probably damaged your kidneys.

It was rice pudding and not confirmed. Toxin poisoning usually lasts longer I'd say.

Jifmicroliquid · 08/10/2024 11:43

I didn’t pee for over 12 hours when I had it, and I have a bladder condition and normally pee every 15 minutes. When I did manage a trickle of pee, it was practically brown, I’ve never seen pee that colour.

But I just kept up little sips of water (or apple juice, I found that easier on my stomach) and as soon as I could manage, I tried little slices of banana.

RaiseYourSkinnyFists · 08/10/2024 14:52

Yes, can people please take care of their kidneys.

You don't win prizes for making yourself more unwell than you need to be. And you can't say, oh it's just a sickness bug. I've been in hospital once within an hour of a serious sickness bug starting. I was immediately put on IV paracetamol because I was in that bad of a state. Some bugs are brutal.

HighlandCow78 · 08/10/2024 19:14

Evening all! A bit of a DD update.. still feeling very rough - on anti-emetics and paracetamol every few hours to at least keep the vomiting + fever at bay. Still living off flat Coca-Cola, she’s very weak and can’t walk much without feeling faint so I reckon that this is going to be a long week of bed rest.. Medically she has been through a lot over the past few years but I’ve genuinely never seen her so ill!

We were due to head to London tomorrow to see a long awaited show. Obviously I’d had to cancel - DD is gutted. Rubbish timing!! 😩

Severe norovirus is really nasty. Young people have the resilience to cope with it, but it quite literally kills the elderly so it’s not something to ignore. Luckily the nasty bit passes in 1-2 days and doesn’t generally require hospitalisation in young people. A couple of days rest and eating bland food and she’ll be back to normal :)

Sounds awful. I wonder what it is that she’s had?!

Silvers11 · 08/10/2024 20:13

So sorry that your DD is still so unwell. Such a shame too about the theatre trip to London. I hope you can go to the same show when she is feeling better. But tickets cost a bomb these days.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/10/2024 20:27

A fever really takes it out of you, takes a good while to start to feel better.

Sapphire387 · 08/10/2024 20:51

I'm glad she is feeling a little better at least... this does sound like a bad case of norovirus to me. The first time I had it (or remember having it), I was so weak, I honestly thought I was going to die. Shaky, could barely walk, the lot.

Hope she continues to be on the mend, and that you don't catch it, of course!

YourTruthorMine · 08/10/2024 20:53

Does anyone else stop drinking when they have norovirus? it always works for me, and I've only ever vomited twice, every time I have had it. I think water prolongs it and you end up more dehydrated.

I’d never advocate for anyone to stop drinking for obvious reasons - it did get to a point last night though where DD stopped trying to drink as everything was just coming up as quickly as it went in. Gave her tummy a few hours to settle before trying small sips again and it did seem to work.

Glad yours is ok OP. Mine finally stopped vomiting around 11am (so that was every 15/20 mins for 13-hours) and the diarrhoea subsiding - don't think there's anything left in her!!

She's not emerged from upstairs and now fast asleep. Nothing to eat but has been guzzling lucozade and squash and dioralyte. Two other girls reported the same at work today so that likely confirms norovirus. She'll stay home tomorrow and hopefully get strength back.

Dr we spoke to on 111 advised against Imodium and antiemetics as he said best to get it all out - better out than in!

One good tip I got was to try Calpol Melts for paracetemol when she couldn't keep anything down. I enquired about paracetemol suppositories in chemist, they were £40 a pack in Boots!! I bought the calpol melts 😜

Best wishes and let's hope we steer clear of it 😴
