DD vomiting bug - A&E?

HighlandCow78 · 07/10/2024 23:05

DD (19) has had really severe diarrhoea and vomiting for the past 24 hours. Can’t keep anything down whatsoever, at this point I don’t know how she even has any fluid in her tummy to vomit - we’ve tried small sips of electrolytes but 10 mins later they come straight back up again. She’s feeling awful - really weak + dehydrated.

Also has a very high temp of 39.5 degrees, again she can’t keep any paracetamol/ibuprofen down to make her more comfortable

AIBU to take her to A&E? Please be kind - I’ve never seen her so ill before and don’t know what to do. I’m concerned that she’s going to end up needing IV fluids as she isn’t peeing and she’s desperately thirsty

You're going to give her ibuprofen on an irritated empty stomach? Not something I'd do, to be honest.

autienotnaughty · 08/10/2024 03:37

I had a horrific case of food poisoning once it like my body panicked and ejected everything violently and instantly. I also felt feverish and shivery.

Sounds like she's over the worst, I'd do tiny sips of water today and try juice later tonight.

Moggmegg · 08/10/2024 03:49

Will hopefully be able to get some ibuprofen in to her to take the fever down a bit more.

An AHP you say? Glad she's feeling better and you didn't take someone with possible noro to A&E when by what you've described nothing out of the ordinary for a stomach virus or food poisoning if it was that.

TwinklyNight · 08/10/2024 04:15

Ice chips are good for gently rehydrating, or smashed up ice cubes. Hope she feels better soon.

A stressed AHP with a severe lack of sleep! You’re right - bad idea. Only popped in to my head as typically she responds a lot better to ibuprofen than paracetamol when she has a temp. I’ll leave her be for now as she’s finally comfortable + settled enough to be getting a bit of sleep.

Are you saying that if your child was dehydrated, couldn’t hold anything down, hadn’t peed in 14 hrs and had a 40 degree temp with abnormal obs you wouldn’t be concerned about them? I texted plenty of nurse friends and they were equally worried. A GP from 111 has called back - if things hadn’t settled a bit by now and she still wasn’t passing urine etc then they would’ve advised to take her in due to dehydration + kidney function concerns.

Treating other people’s children as a HCP is very different to treating your own, I’m certain that all of my colleagues at every level would agree with that.

I’d have been very concerned as well OP, I’m glad she’s doing a little better. Hopefully you can get some rest now too.

She was able to keep some diluting juice + a can of flat coke down after some anti-sickness tablets, I have a much happier DD thank goodness! She was desperate to be able to drink. Water isn’t advisable after D&V as the body needs electrolytes to be replaced.

Sorry that you’ve gone through this as well, it’s rough- it has been about a decade since we had a bad vomiting bug in our house, I’d forgotten the horrors!

When I had food poisoning the doctor told me to not drink plain water as the chances are it would just come straight back, he told me to drink weak squash or anything with sugar in it as the sugar helps the body absorb the fluids. Could she bear to suck a boiled sweet to get some sugar in her system? You could even put extra sugar in some weak squash.

Eventually we were able to get some good old flat Coca-Cola and a bit of orange squash into her. On the up now (hopefully) but thanks for taking the time to comment ❤️

The rice has given her food poisoning. My DH had it and it was the absolute worst kind of d&v. Never again have we eaten re/heated rice.

Second this response. Happened to my DH from re-heated rice and although it was before we met it was so bad he's talked about it 10 years later now and then. He won't touch re-heated rice.

I would call 111, they will know what to do. If anyone in my family was that ill I'd definitely want to speak to a doctor and follow their advice.

Unnecessarily bitchy by that PP…

Also as the HCP in the family, everyone looks to you to make a decision, sort everything out and essentially bear the brunt of the stress.

Ppl would go To a&e for this?! I’m quite shocked

For a high temp and no urine for over 15 hours?

Yes.

nessnessness · 08/10/2024 05:59

Been up all night might with my adult DD too. She's been D&V since 11:30pm, almost 6 and half hours. Can't keep anything down or in! Both exhausted, waiting for Chemist to open for meds etc.

Yep because if you physically can’t keep anything down, and have a very high fever that is also not coming down - both in which can cause dehydration so combined can be pretty horrible on the kidneys.

people always judge people for their decision to go to A&E last year
I was feeling unwell - sort of just like a virus.
I am not one to even visit a GP and defo not A&E.
I fell asleep in the afternoon and woke up with a high fever. Was vomiting and couldn’t keep anything down and my legs were so painful.
3 hours later I was unresponsive and I’m resus while they battled to save my life …my young children nearly lost their very healthy 30 year old mother to ….::
the flu.

I had an acute kidney injury from dehydration, and my body her reacted to the virus. Fluid was I needed most and I had only been vomiting for 4 hours and had a fever for 3 !!!

Zanatdy · 08/10/2024 06:09

Not an A&E trip, not when it’s only been 24hrs. Ring 101 if worried, but it’s quite normal for bugs to take a couple of days to leave your system.

Zanatdy · 08/10/2024 06:22

I see what people are saying about not peeing etc, but if you’re not taking any fluids in, it’s pretty normal not to need to pee. It’s been 24hrs. I went 5 days once with the only fluids to swallow my pain meds, obviously don’t recommend it but i’d had an ERCP and knew i had acute pancreatitis but was too weak to make it down the stairs to go to A&E until day 5. I barely peed at all in those 5 days as I couldn’t drink due to the severe pain. Obviously i needed to have fluids and my heart rate had gone crazy but what i’m saying is 24hrs of no fluids when vomiting isn’t that concerning and definitely isn’t something you need to go to A&E for. For a start, how would you make it there?

When i had nurovirus I slept on the toilet floor. It was pretty awful but you just have to ride it out. Some people do get high temps when sick, my 20yr old son gets a raging temp. It is worrying of course, but A&E if already struggling without people going with D&V bugs, when its normal to feel like that for 24-48hrs, and as we can see she’s turning a corner now. Hope she continues to get better.

No need for this comment 🙄

OP is a first and foremost a worried and stressed mum who's been awake through the night seeing y her daughter, ffs. Her job training won't necessarily just kick in, very different when it's your own.

OP, hope your DD is on the mend this morning Flowers Hopefully she's learned a very hard lesson about reheating rice! Don't ever risk it, basically! Not worth it.

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 06:29

Good god so much rubbish on this thread!

Food poisoning can and does cause a fever, it happened to my dad with campylobacter. My mum had a fever with diverticulitis.

All the judgey comments aren't needed, if OP's daughter couldn't keep anything down she needs to go to a&e! The "she'll be absorbing some of it" is rubbish, she won't be. It just sits in your stomach and comes back up. Listening to the doctor saying "sips of flat coke, he'll absorb some of it" nearly killed my dad.

OP, I'd still take her in. When my dad was sick he did perk up and have some water and then as soon as he ate anything it came back with a vengeance. She needs her kidneys checking, proper fluids (we don't absorb them in the same way as an IV), and a poo test to figure out what's caused this - it may be that she needs antibiotics for the food poisoning.

Trobealone · 08/10/2024 06:38

@HighlandCow78

I’m quite shocked by some of the advice you are getting here.

Absolutely call 111.

My daughter has a severe vomiting bug (although much younger than your DD) - and went floppy/losing consciousness.

I had to take her in to A and E straight away.

They monitored her, it could have been that she needed a drip as she’d lost so much fluid.

Let 111 decide, not people posting here!

nessnessness · 08/10/2024 06:51

Mine is still throwing up and diarrhoea after 7-hours through the night almost constantly. Temp is 99.7 so not quite a fever. I've told her to ring 111 (as an adult, they'll want to talk to her) but she's exhausted. Chemist opens in an hour at 8 so I'll head there and see what they say.

Knackered!

Landlubber2019 · 08/10/2024 07:04

We had similar recently, called 111 who instructed us to go to a+e, they looked less than impressed to say the least!

The hospital gave us some squash and a Calpol syringe and told me to get dc to drink 5ml every 15-20 mins.

We weren't allowed home as no urine for >9hrs.

Once urine produced and tested, we were discharged home.

I explained the situation and they were happy to speak to me instead of DD who had fallen asleep by that point. Sorry that you’ve got a sick one in the house too!! Really hope that she improves soon x
