DD vomiting bug - A&E?

HighlandCow78 · 07/10/2024 23:05

DD (19) has had really severe diarrhoea and vomiting for the past 24 hours. Can’t keep anything down whatsoever, at this point I don’t know how she even has any fluid in her tummy to vomit - we’ve tried small sips of electrolytes but 10 mins later they come straight back up again. She’s feeling awful - really weak + dehydrated.

Also has a very high temp of 39.5 degrees, again she can’t keep any paracetamol/ibuprofen down to make her more comfortable

AIBU to take her to A&E? Please be kind - I’ve never seen her so ill before and don’t know what to do. I’m concerned that she’s going to end up needing IV fluids as she isn’t peeing and she’s desperately thirsty

We had similar recently, called 111 who instructed us to go to a+e, they looked less than impressed to say the least!

The hospital gave us some squash and a Calpol syringe and told me to get dc to drink 5ml every 15-20 mins.

We weren't allowed home as no urine for >9hrs.

Once urine produced and tested, we were discharged home.

Jesus that's really poor from A&E! She should've had bloods taken, a stool sample taken, IV fluids and anti-sickness (it also somehow stops the diarrhoea, I don’t know how!) at the very minimum.

Is this sarcasm?

Elphamouche · 08/10/2024 07:14

I hope she’s feeling better. Not stupid to consider A&E, I had food poisoning 2 years ago and got a telephone appointment with the GP, GP demanded to know why I was on the phone and not in front of her because of the risk of dehydration and kidneys at that point!

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 07:14

@Moggmegg no. I've dealt with a family member who has been in A&E with what would appear to just be a sickness bug multiple times. Without us pushing for those things, he would have died.

Good god so much rubbish on this thread!

Food poisoning can and does cause a fever, it happened to my dad with campylobacter. My mum had a fever with diverticulitis.

All the judgey comments aren't needed, if OP's daughter couldn't keep anything down she needs to go to a&e! The "she'll be absorbing some of it" is rubbish, she won't be. It just sits in your stomach and comes back up. Listening to the doctor saying "sips of flat coke, he'll absorb some of it" nearly killed my dad.

OP, I'd still take her in. When my dad was sick he did perk up and have some water and then as soon as he ate anything it came back with a vengeance. She needs her kidneys checking, proper fluids (we don't absorb them in the same way as an IV), and a poo test to figure out what's caused this - it may be that she needs antibiotics for the food poisoning.

She has settled quite a bit now, able to drink a good amount and keep medication down etc so I think I’ll see how she goes over the course of today. I’m headed into work now (of course this would be the one day that I absolutely cannot take off due to sick colleagues + lack of cover!) and will speak to a few of our own doctors about it. I’m fortunate to work very close by so if things worsen again then I can be home to her in a matter of minutes

Will hopefully be able to get some ibuprofen in to her to take the fever down a bit more.

An AHP you say? Glad she's feeling better and you didn't take someone with possible noro to A&E when by what you've described nothing out of the ordinary for a stomach virus or food poisoning if it was that.

Yeah, an ahp not a nurse. A midwife for example might not know about ibuprofen and an empty stomach being a bad idea as midwives don’t use ibuprofen in their professional capacity.

No need for this comment 🙄

OP is a first and foremost a worried and stressed mum who's been awake through the night seeing y her daughter, ffs. Her job training won't necessarily just kick in, very different when it's your own.

OP, hope your DD is on the mend this morning Flowers Hopefully she's learned a very hard lesson about reheating rice! Don't ever risk it, basically! Not worth it.

I don’t think there will be any rice pudding in our house for a very long time indeed! 😬 It was one of those premade pots, she forgot about it, let it cool and then decided to reheat 🙈 She’s well aware of the risk of reheated rice so no idea what possessed her to do it!!

I’m a physio. Obviously it’s not in our training but I’m well aware of when ibuprofen can/can’t be taken - just a sleep deprived + desperate slip in judgement I’m afraid!

Isn’t Norovirus much more likely than food poisoning ? Noro is horrible … I catch it every couple of years, and every time if awful … and every time I think that it’s something worse than it if. 24 hours in the vomiting stops, then 2 to 3 days of feeling weak and miserable, then back to normal.

i doubt reheating a pot of pre-made rice pudding would cause food poisoning .. it’s not the same as reheating boiled rice.

Rosejasmine · 08/10/2024 07:39

That’s an extremely high temperature for norovirus. Call 111 for advice.

Midwives deal with lots of different medications! Including ibuprofen 😂

Concretejungle1 · 08/10/2024 07:45

I was like this. I called my gp as im on meds that need to be taken several times a day. She gave me meds to help stop the vomiting.

I know.. not the same but it’s the only thing that both she and I can think of. Could be wrong, maybe it is noro after all.

High temp is common with food poisoning. Glad your DD is feeling better OP.

Curtainpots · 08/10/2024 07:47

Sounds much more like a bug to me. Rice can be nasty but I don’t think a pre made pot is the same and if it was rice would probably gone on for longer.
She could have picked up a bug anywhere-there’s a lot around at the moment

Cattyisbatty · 08/10/2024 07:49

No a&e yet. I called 111 for dd a few years ago re her being sick for almost 24 hours and not keeping anything down and they said give tiny sips of water/dioralyte as some fluid will go in. They said if still being sick next day to take to hospital to be rehydrated by drip.

WolfFoxHare · 08/10/2024 07:51

I went to A&E with a bad vomiting and diarrhoea bug when I was in my 20s. I was passing blood and had tachycardia, with a high temperature. They xrayed my bowels and put me on drip with morphine, antibiotics, an anti-spasmodic, an anti-emetic and fluids. I was admitted for two days. Stomach bugs really can be an emergency and A&E absolutely won’t just send you home if you need to be there.

OldTinHat · 08/10/2024 07:58

I had the same thing last Friday until Sunday. D&V, temperature, horrendous headache.

As PPs have said, the last place she should be is in A&E. Keep up with sips of water, electrolytes, maybe suck an ice lolly.

It will work its way through, you've just got to give it time.

Scoobyblue · 08/10/2024 08:01

My ds just had something very similar. He is away at Uni and phoned me to say that he had all the same symptoms. I said sleep and just wait it out, try and have sips of water when you can. At some point his housemates must have panicked though and they took him to A&E. He waited for 6 hours before deciding that he was freezing cold there and it was making him feel so much worse so went home to bed. He was a bit better after 24 hours and then completely better after 72 hours. Hope that your dd gets better soon.

Wrt being turned away at A&E - my 85 year old mother was ill with Campo a few years ago and couldn't keep anything down and was just shitting brown water almost constantly. I don't know where the hell it was coming from as she was taking in nothing! We didn't know what was wrong obvs, but it was so distressing and i asked and asked for help.

It went on at home for SEVEN DAYS with me twice driving her to A&E and wheeling her in in her wheel chair and begging for help and even once calling an ambulance out at 1am when i thought she was going to just die!

All 3 occasions just resulted in lots of HCP shaking of heads and rubbing chins, and once in A&E patronising my mother saying ''don't you fancy a nice portion of chips on the way home perhaps dear?'' (no lie - seriously!?) and sending us away.

Eventually on morning 7 in tears, i phoned mum's GP and told her what was going on and she was horrified and ordered an ambulance to us which arrived within an hour. They whisked mum away, diagnosed Campo and mum was in hospital for 6 WEEKS being barrier nursed for the first 4 of those. Nearly died.

I've lost faith in HCPs since then to be honest.

It's because of the mindset "oh it's just norovirus, go home and get some rest"

Tangerinenets · 08/10/2024 08:24

I had a bug or food poisoning last year. I’m 52 and it was honestly the first time in my life I felt so ill, felt like I was dying. The only thing that helped was sipping coke. I managed to keep it down. Water just came back up. It went as quickly as it started.

whenemmafallsinlove · 08/10/2024 08:27

Well the distressingly high mortality rate from acute kidney injury is no longer any surprise to me after this thread. The op has done everything right and fortunately her daughter has turned a corner in keeping fluids down and peeing. If you cannot do those things you need urgent medical help and that's found at A&E. Look after your kidneys! There is currently a crisis in dialysis capacity in the UK and we do not need people adding to that through neglect of d&v.
I wonder how many of the people posting know what their baseline kidney function is? Food poisoning puts people in hospital all the time due to AKI. Do not muck around with it.

Hope she continues to perk up OP. I would keep an eye on her fluid intake, she needs to drink more than usual if she can get it to stay down. If it won't then you need to get urgent help.

Waiting for 111 callback here. Now passing blood and still being sick. Dashed to chemist and got some dioralyte, pharmacist said small sips...
