NC as very specific!!

Bought a prepacked sandwich on way home. First bite was super super salty, so thought may be there was a pocket of salt. Second bite the same but then my mouth started burning. That lasted for 20 minutes. Only had those two bites. No chilli or rocket etc in it, no chilli used by company. Chemical taste. Mouth now left with that post emulsifier taste (two hours on) but no burning.

I phoned 111 and they sent me to A&E. vitals all fine at triage so home now as nothing they can do and I’m not experiencing any symptoms. Thank goodness - didn’t fancy staying in hospital with ‘sandwich mouth’ - most embarrassing when there are people with actual problems!

But what are your best guesses about what it was? I eat black pepper, rocket and chilli and it was none of those. Tasted like a chemical rather than food. Anyone have experience of making pre-packaged sandwiches and what can go wrong please?

Never eating there again!!

What kind of sandwich was it? Was it definitely sealed? Probably contaminated on the production line...

Supersoakers · 07/10/2024 20:14

Have you contacted the supermarket?

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 07/10/2024 20:17

Contact the supermarket and give them the line details from the packaging

it’s likely some sort of contamination on the line.

not particularly reassuring I realise.

Glad sandwich mouth has calmed somewhat and you’re ok.

SeriouslyStressed · 07/10/2024 20:39

Contact environmental health at your local council, keep the sandwich and receipt to give them so they can test it

Blackcat08 · 07/10/2024 20:43

Radish?

biglipslittlehips · 07/10/2024 20:44

Presumably you still have the rest of the sandwich.
You can get it tested
If the supermarket wants it, give them half.

AandEembarrassment · 07/10/2024 20:44

Thanks all. Contacted them straight away and told them not to sell any more just in case. Contacted HQ too.

Yes, I think contamination of some kind but with what?! Eek!!!

Mouth still feels a bit weird.

I think it's important incase it's been contaminated or tampered with in some way. I'd contact the supplier as well

MoanyPony · 07/10/2024 20:47

Fake salt, you know, the low sodium salt substitute makes my mouth burn.

They used to use it in a restaurant chain, my partner couldn't know what I was complained about but it fizzed and burned my mouth (not literally, just felt like it 🤢)

AandEembarrassment · 07/10/2024 20:48

Blackcat08 · 07/10/2024 20:43

Radish?

No. Def not. Nothing with heat in the ingredients and radish heat usually only lasts moments.

It was a wrap and def sealed.

It must have been a gherkin.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 07/10/2024 20:50

Did you keep the rest and the packaging?

Environmental health? Really? I’ve never done that before.

Yes. Put it in the freezer. So where would I get it tested? I would like to know what it was.

Will do. Already contacted company. Told the shop not to sell any more and contacted HQ.

Oh really? That could be it then. Did your mouth burn for long. Mine was burning for 20 mins at least.

Washing powder tastes salty/ burning. Or some other kind of cleaning product that has got into the production process maybe.

delilabell · 07/10/2024 20:54

I known its not but once i ate some washing powder accidently (don't ask) and it tasted very salty and then weird. Could it be something like that perhaps?

Vettrianofan · 07/10/2024 20:50

Ha ha. If only.

Id feel a tight chump if I went to A&E for gherkin burn. 😂

@delilabell ha I am glad I am not the only one who has accidentally tasted washing powder 😂
