NC as very specific!!

Bought a prepacked sandwich on way home. First bite was super super salty, so thought may be there was a pocket of salt. Second bite the same but then my mouth started burning. That lasted for 20 minutes. Only had those two bites. No chilli or rocket etc in it, no chilli used by company. Chemical taste. Mouth now left with that post emulsifier taste (two hours on) but no burning.

I phoned 111 and they sent me to A&E. vitals all fine at triage so home now as nothing they can do and I’m not experiencing any symptoms. Thank goodness - didn’t fancy staying in hospital with ‘sandwich mouth’ - most embarrassing when there are people with actual problems!

But what are your best guesses about what it was? I eat black pepper, rocket and chilli and it was none of those. Tasted like a chemical rather than food. Anyone have experience of making pre-packaged sandwiches and what can go wrong please?

Never eating there again!!

How would washing powder get into the production line though? Or any cleaning product?

@AandEembarrassment I can't even remember how I know! Probably licked my fingers expecting sugar or something like that.

Also - never lick brown stuff unless you know what it is

Attelina · 07/10/2024 20:58

Possible contamination from a cleaning chemical? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fescue · 07/10/2024 20:58

A concentrated pesto does that to me - and a random person I met in the cafe atop the Jungfrau once.

The burn, the itchy nose and the soapy after taste. Always with pesto, which I now avoid.

squishee · 07/10/2024 20:58

Detergent residue from the factory / industrial kitchen?

Whoahnelly · 07/10/2024 20:59

Were there pine nuts in it? Like a pesto wrap? There is a thing called “pine mouth” where if you eat a bad pine nut, it creates a chemical like taste that lasts on your tongue for around 2 weeks. Something to do with the oils coating the tongue.

Itabsolutelyispossible · 07/10/2024 21:00

Could happen if machinery has been cleaned using chemicals and the rinsing process didn't happen properly?

That’s my best guess. But how?!

@delilabell ha I am glad I am not the only one who has accidentally tasted washing powder 😂

Oh god .. I had a massage once in a beauty salon .. when I got up to get dressed she'd left me a cup of water on the side .. next to that was a dish of what I thought was mints .. only it wasn't .. it was chunks of decorative salt .. which I only realised when I'd sucked a gobfull and tried to crunch them 😩😩😩

That’s interesting. No pesto in the ingredients. I had pesto the other day at home and it was fine. So I think I can rule that one out.

That’s my wondering. But how? It was in the centre of the wrap rather than the outside.

I genuinely don't understand why you rang 111 let alone went to a&e. Very odd

Oh no!! I bet that ruined the relaxed feeling. 😕

Omg, this made me chuckle (sorry)

There must have been some kind of cleaning products or something released into it during the factory process. I hope you get compensation.
That would put you off packaged sandwiches for life wouldn't it!?

BrendaSmall · 07/10/2024 21:07

What was actually stated in the ingredients list?)

Oh possibly. But the salty taste was dispersed.

Well I googled it to see what it might be. AI suggested 111. I guess I have ingested something potentially poisonous. 111 said they would test the sandwich.

That’s what I wonder. Yes. I’m already thinking forward to how I can pack lunches from now on.

Yes this. Exactly what was in the wrap?

What was the filling meant to be ? Can you post the ingredients?

Why not just use your brain and not AI? A&E is accident and emergency. You had neither of those. You didn't feel unwell. Just a burning mouth from something you ate.

Lots of UPF stuff in the wrap, cheese and mayo but then just the fresh ingredients.

They told me I did the right thing. But thanks. You sound lurvely. 😊
