NC as very specific!!

Bought a prepacked sandwich on way home. First bite was super super salty, so thought may be there was a pocket of salt. Second bite the same but then my mouth started burning. That lasted for 20 minutes. Only had those two bites. No chilli or rocket etc in it, no chilli used by company. Chemical taste. Mouth now left with that post emulsifier taste (two hours on) but no burning.

I phoned 111 and they sent me to A&E. vitals all fine at triage so home now as nothing they can do and I’m not experiencing any symptoms. Thank goodness - didn’t fancy staying in hospital with ‘sandwich mouth’ - most embarrassing when there are people with actual problems!

But what are your best guesses about what it was? I eat black pepper, rocket and chilli and it was none of those. Tasted like a chemical rather than food. Anyone have experience of making pre-packaged sandwiches and what can go wrong please?

Never eating there again!!

Was there corriander in the sandwich? Some people have an inherited gene that makes coriander taste like soap to them.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/10/2024 09:38

The coriander thing isn't a burning sensation, just perfumey,.sockey yuk.

@AandEembarrassment yes, it can make my mouth feel strange. Same for vinegar etc.

I think the likelihood is it's just a bit of food as opposed to something nefarious

Definitely wasn’t like the times I’ve had it before. Definitely something extremely strong. Could just be salt if that causes such intense burning.

I once took a big mouthful of a sandwich in which the lettuce had clearly been washed in a sink and contaminated with Vim. Tasted it all week.

Did the tests from environmental health ever come back? Hooked.

The offending item remains in the freezer and I am still waiting to hear from the council and the company’s safety team. It’s pretty poor.

Disappointing update:

I have heard back from the avocado, herb, and parmesan wrap making company. They have conducted their investigation (having not taken the sandwich for analysis) and it was ‘inconclusive’. They found that nothing had changed in the cleaning and production process. They have offered me a £30 gift card - hilarious. I’ll never eat there again.

I have written back asking for the report and asking to take it further.

I’ve not heard back from the council either.

I was thinking about just letting it slide as I’ve got a hell of a lot going on in life at the moment anyway, but given the seriousness of contamination for some people I feel like I need to take it as far as I can. For me it was a burning mouth for 20 minutes and some hassle but cross contamination can mean far more serious consequences for some.

So still no idea what I ate!

Oh they have refreshed the training for the team. Sounds like they are made on site rather than in a factory.
