NC as very specific!!

Bought a prepacked sandwich on way home. First bite was super super salty, so thought may be there was a pocket of salt. Second bite the same but then my mouth started burning. That lasted for 20 minutes. Only had those two bites. No chilli or rocket etc in it, no chilli used by company. Chemical taste. Mouth now left with that post emulsifier taste (two hours on) but no burning.

I phoned 111 and they sent me to A&E. vitals all fine at triage so home now as nothing they can do and I’m not experiencing any symptoms. Thank goodness - didn’t fancy staying in hospital with ‘sandwich mouth’ - most embarrassing when there are people with actual problems!

But what are your best guesses about what it was? I eat black pepper, rocket and chilli and it was none of those. Tasted like a chemical rather than food. Anyone have experience of making pre-packaged sandwiches and what can go wrong please?

Never eating there again!!

They told me I did the right thing. But thanks. You sound lurvely. 😊

Well yeah they aren't going to say "you did the wrong thing" they tell everyone they did the right thing.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 07/10/2024 21:14

@reallifeboogie presumably it could have been a serious allergic reaction and 111 were erring on the side of caution.

What was the filling meant to be ? Can you post the ingredients?

Can’t be bothered to get it out of the freezer but avocado, cucumber, Parmesan in a wrap. The cheese, mayo and wrap had loads of UPF crap. I have had it loads before and this was a definite addition, definitely not an ingredient but some kind of product. The low sodium salt mentioned above could be it. Or cleaning something.

Where was it from?

heldinadream · 07/10/2024 21:16

3rd person with washing product in mouth. Washing machine liquid for me. Spilt some on my arm without noticing, saw it, thought it was yogurt, licked it enthusiastically.
Oh my fucking God I thought I was going to vomit my guts up and yes the first hit is salt. I could still taste it a week later I kid you not it was vile.

Could happen if machinery has been cleaned using chemicals and the rinsing process didn't happen properly?

Ah. That could be it. Although it seemed to be inside it.

Definitely contact environmental health (probably via the local council). The UK's health security agency can do this sort of testing if it's not available locally and the local environmental health will be able to check. You're imagining it's just you but it's important to report in case it isn't.

Wellbeige · 07/10/2024 21:17

Sorry if I missed it but what was the sandwich/wrap meant to be?

I mean was it chicken tikka/cheese and onion…

Yes. That’s a good point. I will do.

You did the right thing OP. That sort of response could have been the start of an allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock. You need antihistamine very fast in case your airways swell if so. A E was the only sensible option.

Can’t help with any suggestions about the mystery substance -

But I once found a contact lens in a pre packaged sandwich, I haven’t eaten one for about 10 years. Never again 🤢🤢🤢🤢

@AandEembarrassment I can't even remember how I know! Probably licked my fingers expecting sugar or something like that.

Also - never lick brown stuff unless you know what it is

I made this mistake once. Slightly transparent almost pale orange on my arm, thought it was golden syrup as had been making breakfast.

Also had a baby in nappies at the time.

It was not golden syrup 🤢

Well that’s very weird. I’m wondering if there was nothing wrong with it and the burning sensation straight away was an allergic reaction? You can get a reaction out the blue to something you have always been ok eating before.

but you were wise to contact the company and save the sandwich. I hope you find out what caused it.

Why not just use your brain and not AI? A&E is accident and emergency. You had neither of those. You didn't feel unwell. Just a burning mouth from something you ate.

Well you sound nice! If OP had ingested a chemical substance it could have led to swelling of the tongue or throat.
She did the right thing getting checked out.

ladyditaverner · 07/10/2024 21:24

Could it have been a big chunk of dried Parmesan? It sounds gross though, would def put me off.

Whoahnelly · 07/10/2024 20:59

Were there pine nuts in it? Like a pesto wrap? There is a thing called “pine mouth” where if you eat a bad pine nut, it creates a chemical like taste that lasts on your tongue for around 2 weeks. Something to do with the oils coating the tongue.

I was just about to say the same thing. I ate some pine nuts from a packet that had been open for a while and my mouth burnt and had a metallic taste for days afterwards.

If it wasn’t for the really odd super salty taste I’d agree but it’s a sandwich I buy regularly and there was something extra. For sure.

How odd. I’ve just checked the website and it does have pine nuts. But what about the intense salty taste. Chemical after taste. Does that sound right?

Saltiness fits for the cheese but what about the burning?
