He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

He sounds hilarious. But I guess it depends how it was said? If it was said really viciously and in an out of control burst of anger and then he was back tracking with his pep talk maybe he has anger management issues? If it was said as a bit of light hearted banter, I think the people at the other table are the ones with the issue

Totally agree...I would have found this funny and thought the other couple snooty 😂

See, I would be impressed that he rescued it rather than kill it.. look at it a bit like yr child running into a busy road, your first reaction is to be cross, closely followed by cuddles and kisses. IMO he seems like a very nice man and a keeper, better that than some guy who everyone THINKS is wonderful but actually isn't! Stuff what anyone else may or may not have thought! :-)

Whatafustercluck · 08/10/2024 07:54

If I'd overheard this I'd have pissed myself laughing. He's right - wasps are hideous Dementors. They think just because they can go around stinging people without disemboweling themselves that that's exactly what they were put on earth to do. No matter how much anyone tells me they do actually pollinate and therefore serve a purpose, or tries to make me feel sorry for them because the hive cuts off their food supply sending them into a frenzy, I hate them with an absolute passion. I hate their stupid black and yellow stripes, I detest their whiny little voices and how they follow you around like an unwanted younger sibling asking to borrow your hoodie. And I particularly despise how they call for back up from their second cousins twice removed just because they decide to come into your air space and ram raid your meal. To be frank, calling a wasp a moron is on the tame side. Little fuckers, they are.

Fun fact - there is a way of making a wasp commit suicide. But not even I am cruel enough to either try it or divulge how.

That comment must have stung.
Wasps have feelings too.

No!

My point was we were having a nice meal and him calling the wasp a moron caused other diners to look at him like he was mad. I was embarrassed

This is the most ridiculous question I’ve ever seen on Mumsnet, get a grip, it was a comment when a creature flew into his drink! Over sensitive doesn’t even cover it 😱

user98786 · 08/10/2024 10:26

Growlybear83 · 07/10/2024 20:45

Is there anything nowadays that isn't considered offensive ? 😳

TERF? Karen? Bitch? Nasty woman?

Lyraloo · 08/10/2024 10:29

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:39

Ok that is quite funny

So that’s funny, but it wasn’t when your partner did it?!!!!!

I never knew wasps were multilingual. I've learned so many things on mumsnet.

I’m worried now as we were talking to the German wasps in English!

I got stung in the armpit by a German wasp, just as I was explaining to DS that it wouldn't sting and even if it did it wouldn't really hurt.
I think Herr Wasp got the gist of what I said even if my German is very basic

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I”m embarrassed by the stupidity of this problem.

Suppose your partner was out with you and suddenly called out 'moron'. Wouldn't that be more embarrassing if passers by thought it was aimed at you?

I can see OPs dilemma, but it is still funny.

Thanks for wasting 16 seconds of my time post posting a load of crap.

danceon · 08/10/2024 11:36

Think the people on the next table either, misunderstood who/ what was being called a moron or have no sense of humour! 😂

Blokegarget · 08/10/2024 11:58

What a horrible , nasty person your partner is. Red flag.

LTB immediately and empty their bank accounts and claim any property they have as your own. Courts will side with you here as he used the word “moron” to an insect.
disgusting behaviour.

I have no regrets, it was worth it for the people who I gave their first laugh of the day! And honestly the title should've been a clue.

I hope the wasp is thriving wherever it is.

The couple next to us looked about 22, so maybe 'moron' is like some word you don't say now or something, as others mentioned.

He is a great guy and the thread has made me realize I should take less heed of what others think.

I see this as a clear case of animal cruelty. There’s a wasp out there with lower self esteem thanks to this man. Awful.

Arjee · 08/10/2024 14:17

Sometimes people say things off the cuff, because they are caught off guard.

He might have just been annoyed that the wasp ruined his drink.

In the heat of the moment he thought “what a moron”, and just happened to blurt that out.

The couple next to you were being rude.

Anyway, it sounds like there was a lot of PDA going on. Maybe they were staring because of that.

Gilliebobs · 08/10/2024 14:37

DaftyLass · 06/10/2024 17:14

Did the wasp say it's feelings were hurt?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Abhannmor · 08/10/2024 14:58

Waspie is a moron. Also has a drink problem. Sometimes you must be cruel to be kind. She'll be grateful one day 🐝 🍷

We rescued two from drowning in Diet Coke, some karma surely? That was after husband had got stung twice (batting them away so his own fault) and daughter once when just generally gesticulating in conversation so just bad timing.

but I an reassured that they understand! Armpit though ouch.

LushAquaticWonderland · 08/10/2024 15:24

This is one of the funniest things I have read in a while. I love people like this. He sounds endearingly barking mad. Giving the wasp a pep talk 🤣

BooneyBeautiful · 08/10/2024 16:43

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:15

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it

I wouldn't perceive it to be quite angry and nasty.

Well, I shouldn’t think the wasp willl need counselling. 👍

Don't be too worried. Considering what I have learnt on this thread, I would imagine most people are winging it when talking to all things crittery.

The key is not to drone on too much.

I think you may have misgendered the poor old wasp there.😎

januaryjan · 08/10/2024 17:27

Maybe the wasp identifies as a non binary Dolphin. Hence the nosedive into liquid.

You have to be so careful.
