He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

I never knew wasps were multilingual. I've learned so many things on mumsnet.

keffie12 · 07/10/2024 20:08

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think his reaction is funny. The others need to lighten up. Though humour is subjective, I know

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it

Moron is a harmless light-hearted term like 'daft'. Or idiot. Or pain in the arse.

If I were him I would be calling that wasp a LOT worse than 'moron'. Calling a wasp a moron seems quite endearing and funny to me.

grumpygrape · 07/10/2024 20:25

OP, your only response, if you felt people were looking at you thinking he was calling you a moron, should have been ‘Don’t call me Maureen’. You’re probably too young to understand so I recommend watching the Airplane film (movie) from 1980.

Champagnetennis17 · 07/10/2024 20:26

Get a life.. you do sound uptight!! Was he joking? I mean lighten up a bit and don’t worry what people think of you!

pineapplesundae · 07/10/2024 20:35

You must be very young to be embarrassed by something so trivial. Do you always worry so much about what you imagine others are thinking? The couple probably looked to see what the bother was about and nothing more.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 07/10/2024 20:39

Maybe the couple were staring at you because they had lost control of their remote control wasp and were suddenly aware that it had dive bombed into your partner's wine.

PeepDeBeaul · 07/10/2024 20:42

Given how often we call our cat an idiot in our house (he's really not the sharpest tool in the box) I'm pretty sure a wasp landing in a glass of wine deserves the label "moron". I mean it's not a very sensible thing to do is it? I think I'd get on quite well with your bf, similar humour?

Newsenmum · 07/10/2024 20:44

I think that term is now considered offensive so may have been that’

It’s changed a bit unfortunately

Is there anything nowadays that isn't considered offensive ? 😳

I mean if means someone who has an intellectual disability. The same as ‘sp**tic

Just the messenger!

KMarr · 07/10/2024 20:55

I would have made a bee line for the bar 😉

Madrigal12 · 07/10/2024 20:56

Wasps can be morons, but Bees can be real arseholes.......don't get me started with Hornets

CrazyMare70 · 07/10/2024 21:14

I called a spider a ‘dickhead’ after it dropped and perilously swung in front of my face on a busy A road yesterday, gave it a proper talking to about how he could’ve got us both killed….I blame the peri-menopause

OldScribbler · 07/10/2024 21:16

Frankly it sounds as if he has a sense of the ridiculous but you don't. Maybe you should look round for someone more boring. My ex whom I am very close to often calls me a moron. It's a bit of a running joke between us.

JKe · 07/10/2024 22:02

I think it's quite an amusing anecdote, your boyfriend sounds quite a sweet guy giving a nearly drowned/drunken wasp a telling off, like with a crotchety baby; you can say anything with the right tone of voice. I think your boyfriend sounds like a keeper, I wouldn't like to see a giant of a person, or anyone, stamp a wasp to death, that would be the end for me.

Radiolala · 07/10/2024 22:13

I really dislike the word ‘moron’. It’s almost as bad as the awful R word imo. It would have been nicer if he had of called it a cunt

Him saying it loud enough that other diners looked would have embarrassed me.

ConfusingTrousers · 07/10/2024 22:15

Divorce him. No, marry him, then divorce him. The wasp I mean.

CrowleyKitten · 07/10/2024 22:20

that's cute and funny.
at some point over the summer, my cat was eating plastic, like they do, and I yelled at him "don't eat plastic, you NONCE!" then I fell about laughing that I'd basically called my neutered cat a paedophile.

TheMamaLife · 07/10/2024 22:26

Seems you’re bothered about what the other diners thought. Why? You’re having a nice meal, partner did something funny in response to something quite scary, and carried on the joke after. Take the stick out of your ass.

I”m embarrassed by the stupidity of this problem.

Was it that the people who heard might have thought he was calling you a moron?

SnozPoz · 08/10/2024 05:28

He sounds hilarious. But I guess it depends how it was said? If it was said really viciously and in an out of control burst of anger and then he was back tracking with his pep talk maybe he has anger management issues? If it was said as a bit of light hearted banter, I think the people at the other table are the ones with the issue

Retiredfromearlyyears · 08/10/2024 06:15

Hysterical! Is the wasp now in therapy? Is that the real 'Sting in the tail!' Really your partner should just have looked "deep into its eyes" and told it to Buzz off! 😆 🤣 😂
