He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

I didn't say anything but there was something about the 'display' that left me feeling weird after it

God help you if you thought that was a display.

Dumbo12 · 07/10/2024 17:56

Op,I think you should end the relationship and then the boyfriend can find a girlfriend who isn't so concerned about what total strangers think of him.

AdoraBell · 07/10/2024 17:59

That wouldn’t embarrass me, when a wasp lands in my wine I tell it to get out of my wine and get its own.

tommyhoundmum · 07/10/2024 18:01

I would have laughed

Rescuing it and then giving it a pep talk does not seem all that angry to me. I'm in the US so possibly the word has a different usage there than it does here but here "moron" just means someone who is stupid. Which landing in a glass of wine is, for a wasp.

Maybe the wasp likes a drink. Booze can make you appear a bit dozy. Come to think of it I was pissed most of the time for about 30 years,

Grammarnut · 07/10/2024 18:03

He was nice to a wasp, what's the problem? What a nice man. Cherish him. Assuming this is not a joke btw.

RisingSunn · 07/10/2024 18:04

I think perhaps you worry too much about other people’s perception of you?

Your partner sounds like a good guy with a great sense of humour!

Like PP said - the other diners may have thought he was talking to you.

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:13

No!

My point was we were having a nice meal and him calling the wasp a moron caused other diners to look at him like he was mad. I was embarrassed

But the wasp was a moron! And certainly needed to be made aware of that fact, otherwise waspy will just continue with the same unacceptable behaviour!

MauveExpert · 07/10/2024 18:06

Personally I’d find this hilarious. I like people that aren’t afraid to be a bit different.

PrueHal · 06/10/2024 17:14

It's tongue and cheek but in a way - it seemed am angry reaction.

Assuming he let the wasp dry itself out and then let it go?

Wasps can be annoying at this time of year when they are sleepy, but it's not going to be annoyed at being called a moron, as it can't speak human language.

Why were you embarrassed? Had you already drunk a lot of the wine? If a wasp landed in my drink I think I would have called it a lot worse than a moron!

DanielaDressen · 07/10/2024 18:12

He sounds nice that he let it go, I’d have smushed it flat.

AspiringChatBot · 07/10/2024 18:14

He should have swallowed the wasp without comment and continued staring into your eyes so as not to interrupt the romantic moment. I would bin him, OP - if you don't respect yourself enough to demand the very best without ever settling, then who will?

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 07/10/2024 18:15

Meh.....I called a box of teabags 'an absolute twat' this morning. They fell out of the cupboard and scattered allover the worktop. My colleague turned round laughing and said did you just call a box of teabags a twat ? Then we both laughed.......absolutely no embarrassment. It was a lighthearted, funny moment. Same as the wasp situation, the only weirdo in this scenario is you.

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it

if it’s that big of a deal to you just break up with him, if you don’t care enough to break up, why complain over something this stupid?! I always thought Moron is like saying idiot just a bit stronger.

IcyLilacZebra · 07/10/2024 18:28

That's fucking funny 😂 I would have laughed at that

SillyOldBucket · 07/10/2024 18:29

I think you are overreacting

SarahsHoneydew · 07/10/2024 18:31

Wow, lighten up!!!

Partylikeits1985 · 07/10/2024 18:37

YABU

Wasps are bastards and deserve all they get.

Call my husband and eldest moron possibly daily🫣

Hyperbowl · 07/10/2024 18:44

I’ve had a really crap day and this made me laugh for the first time all day. 😂😂

A wasp diving into a glass of liquid is a moron.

A partner who then gives the moron a pep talk instead of bludgeoning it to death sounds like a keeper.

I thought this too 😂

I mean yes it's a bit performative and he maybe was trying to front it out after the other diners looked at him. Is he ND? I have ADHD this would have made me laugh and probably join in the joke offering the wasp words of encouragement 😄

FatNSassy · 07/10/2024 18:45

Sorry to be frank, but it sounds like you need to get more of a life tbh.

That gave me a much needed laugh 😂Flowers

Tough one really, were they a bit snobby at the next table!? 😁 depends if he 'acted weird' saying it I guess?
