To expect my daughter to have access to non halal meat

Bushmillsbabe · 06/10/2024 16:13

My daughters school now has only halal meat available for their school lunches.

I personally do not wish my child to have halal meat, I think its more cruel than other slaughter methods, however this thread is not intended to debate which is worse/better.

She is dairy and gluten intolerant, and her safe options tended to be things like roast chicken, the vegetarian options usually contain dairy. The pork sausages contain gluten so she would have the chicken sausages, she also eats burgers and meatballs but these are now also halal.

So if I don't give her halal meat, she is left with jacket potato with beans every day, which she does eat, but doesn't want to have every day.

I fully respect that Muslim parents wish their child to have halal meat, but am I wrong in thinking my dietary preferences for my daughter should also be respected and she should have access to non halal meat?

But by that same sentiment, the Muslim children could bring their own lunch or eat the vegetarian option.

As has been said, they will go with the majority. If the majority aren't fussed eating halal meat, then they will go with that.

Well that's ok then. Let's force all non religious kids to bring in packed lunches.

The vast majority simply won't care. So it won't be all the "non religious" kids. It will be a very small number who have a problem with it.

Not everyone wants to eat halal meat. Why should their beliefs be respected less than people who believe in a magic man in the sky?

But why though? There's no impact on non Muslim children. It's still meat, just meat Muslims can have as well.

And by that sentiment, there’s no impact on Muslim children eating haram meat. It goes against their parent’s beliefs, sure, but it won’t impact them otherwise. Just the same as only providing halal meat to children whose parents don’t want them to eat halal meat for their own beliefs.

If someone isn't religious then what's the goddamn issue with halal meat? The animal was still killed against it's will. If some blessings were said, what's the impact?

No. You are not being unreasonable. We are not a Muslim country, why is the meat halal? This is extremely cruel on animals . Are animal rights agencies aware that halal meat is in school lunches in the UK.

@TENSsion eating meat that isn’t halal for Muslim children isn’t just against their parents belief. It is also against the child’s belief. This implies religion has been forced upon a child, religion can be taught with love, care and the beliefs can become a part of the child’s core beliefs too. Negating them isn’t fair.

@FunGoose i have of course reported this post. Not that it will change your thinking. How vile to use racist language, shocking.

Why do people who believe they can only meat killed in a certain way matter more the other people who believe they can only eat meat killed in a different way?

Halal is more cruel as the animal is not allowed to be stunned and the death is slower and more painful. So that is the impact.

Religion is forced on children by parents. It is the parent’s belief until the child becomes an adult and can follow that religion by their own free will and consent.

Hate speech and ignorance (imagine thinking Muslims only come from Pakistan?).

Yabu.

Even if it wasn't halal, do you think schools serve up organic, free range hand reared meat....?

If you care so much about animal welfare, go veggie.

Even as a non-meat eater, I would say that beef herds in the uk have a pretty decent life, they don't have to be "organic" to be treated well. Halal slaughter is inhumane, it doesn't meet the standards for humane slaughter set out in the UK regs, which is why you need a religious exemption for it.
OP has already explained that the veggie options at school are usually not suitable for their child due to allergies. You can't expect a child to eat baked potato and beans 5 days a week, 39 weeks a year for 7 years while they get through school!

I have, Fungoose is on several threads and I have reported those I’ve seen. MN need to do better, there is a flurry of threads recently that are clearly going to attract the likes of Fungoose but MN HQ does nothing. What has happened? MN used to be a place that was safe for all.

You should ask for the vegetarian option to cater to her other dietary needs.

But they contain dairy which she is intolerant to and probably also gluten
