Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

do people understand that cis is a Latin prefix 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I don’t know what’s more irritating - the transphobia or a complete lack of understanding of how the English language works. Your transphobia makes you look bigoted and stupid! Wahoo!

"I’d rather people around me be able to be happy and identify as whatever they want than be unhappy all their lives."

"People" in this thread are telling you, loud, clear and repeatedly, that they want to identify as women. And you still tell them that is not valid.

And you're unable to see the hypocrisy.

It is becoming very hard to keep supporting a group that keeps demanding a right by denying it to another oppresed group. In case you haven't noticed, women were oppressed way before transgenderism was an issue. And still are.

AgileGreenSeal · 06/10/2024 20:59

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 20:55

So you are not a transgender person?

I’m an adult human female = WOMAN.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 06/10/2024 21:01

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 20:54

What adjective would you prefer for someone who is not transgender where the difference is important if you need to capture this information?

I have repeatedly given examples up thread of how that information can be gathered:

What was your sex at birth? M/F

Do you have a gender identity? Y/N
If yes, what is it?

Or Do you have a gender identity that differs from your sex at birth? Y/N
If yes, what is it?

Helleofabore · 06/10/2024 21:01

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:28

I suppose it all boils down to identity and what we feel like describing ourselves as.

Identity is a powerful thing hence I wouldn’t mind ever there being a transgender “box” but also the same respect needs to go the other way I suppose.

Edited

That is a major part of the problem though. The respect doesn't go the other way.

For the philosophical belief to work, the people who seek to redefine themselves have forceably redefined all people.

It isn’t them saying ‘people with transgender identities’ and ‘people without transgender identities’. It is them declaring everyone has this thing they belief in - a gender identity. That is what this word ‘cis’ means.

It means that a person identifies their gender identity as the sex they were born. It was never a neutral position.

But then it fails even more when it then also means in the term ‘cis woman/girl’ includes male people with particular medical conditions that mean their bodies go through male puberty to virilise. As I mentioned just upthread.

For example, religious people can call other people non-believers of their religion and this is a material fact. It is real and it is meaningful. I doubt people would reject that. It is a null option. It doesn't require the person who does not believe in the religion to do anything. It simply describes their lack of belief.

In comparison, ‘cis’ is not describing the lack of belief. Because it demands that everyone has a gender identity. It is enforcing belief on the recipient of that label.

How is this acceptable?

Here is the thing - these people know they are exhibiting double standards.

But it affects women and girls primarily, so they really don't care. Delight in causing distress, even.

This whole movement is revenge for feminism, I'm absolutely certain of it.

I honestly believe they weren't expecting so many women to collectivise against it though and they certainly weren't expecting JK to shine a light on what they were doing, which is why they're so mad.

Its all gone to pot, now all that is left is impotent rage.

Speaking of not being willing to answer...?

Sex at birth is easy to ask

Not really as there are people whose sex couldn't be determined at birth who I feel shouldn't be dragged into the whole transgender thing

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 21:04

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 06/10/2024 21:03

I am cisgender. See - that wasn’t so hard!

Waitwhat23 · 06/10/2024 21:04

Oh, 100%. So often you see (here and elsewhere) 'where are the feminists?' and 'well, you're the ones who fought against the men's clubs - haha!'

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 21:03

Who gets to define what is offensive?

Plenty of us have told you that we find the term cis offensive, but you won't accept that.

So it’s absolutely fine to offend women by using the slur ‘cis’ but not men who claim to be women - standard for you really

soupfiend · 06/10/2024 21:05

Elsvieta · 06/10/2024 20:57

Sure, but in order to have figures on how many trans employees you have, you would then have to ask, in some form of words, which sex they call themselves now.

Do you have a gender (identity) - if yes, please enter it here

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 06/10/2024 21:05

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 21:04

How nice for you TransDadJoke. I'm a woman. No gender required. See - not hard.

Are the adult human females of Afghanistan all cisgender women? Is that your answer? You seem quite convinced that's an "easy" solution above - but it suggests you've maybe not seen or thought about my 4 issues post...?

What is offensive about it? It would be very helpful if you could explain why it is offensive as it looks clear and concise to me.

Incredibly rare and you're right that they shouldnt be dragged into this

However by the time they get to filling out a work questionnaire their sex has been determined for many years. Sex at birth, is not the same as 'sex determined at birth'.

Becuase your sex doesnt change.

CoffeeGood · 06/10/2024 21:07

Evilartsgrad · 06/10/2024 20:45

How exactly does it hurt you to be so described?

Oh, wait, it doesn't. Your objection is because it acknowledges trans people. Can't have that, can we ?🙄

It hurts because I am NOT "cis". I have no gender, I am simply "woman".

By your logic, why does it hurt a man in a skirt to tick the "man" box. That's what they are. Oh, wait, it doesn't. A person with a penis IS a man. Your objection is because it acknowledges women. You simply cannot have it both ways. If you say it discriminates against transwomen then by your very own argument, it is also discrimination against women.

Catiette · 06/10/2024 21:07

Brace yourself, @Errors. Things get a bit repetitive...
