Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

Is there an option for "other"
I always use that if asked about gender and say "I have no gender but my sex is female "

So you ask people to refer to you as they/them instead of she?

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 20:47

Someone rise being trans does not stop me being “a woman”

None of it changed the fact that cisgender simply means not transgender. You don’t have to believe trans women are women to be cisgender.

i am not telling anyone they are wrong. I am politely explaining to gender critical people (not women in general) what this adjective means. If you object to being called not transgender and you are not transgender, I don’t understand what the issue is.

As has been explained to you, ''cis'' doesn't necessarily simply mean ''not trans'' - which is on its own a silly description anyway.

There are those right here in this thread saying it means ''our sexed body aligns with our gender''.

Which is about as clear as mud. Because what is gender? How do I know they match?

If you're not trans then you're cis. I honestly don't even know what you think it means?!

No, the term is female adult not cis anything.

We don't need a definition.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 06/10/2024 20:49

Elsvieta · 06/10/2024 20:40

If they're trying to keep accurate figures on how many of their employees are trans, there is. Because if the only option is man / woman, all the trans women will tick woman, and they can't keep accurate stats.

You can keep accurate figures without using the the term cis.

What was your sex at birth?

Do you have a gender identity that differs to your sex at birth?

If yes, are you trans / non binary / other.

That way you can keep track of individuals sex and gender identity. Given sex is a protected characteristic, it's probably a good idea to track that.

Namechangedforthisthreadhere · 06/10/2024 20:49

I hope those of you pushing Cis aren't in senior positions at your workplace, or you'll be bringing your employers serious trouble by misrepresenting the Equality Act.

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 20:46

Are you transgender or not transgender if you don’t mind me asking?

I am and have always been female my entire life.
When I was younger I was a girl.
Now that I’m an adult I’m a woman.
I’m not a ‘cis’ anything.

If you read the posts you’ll see what the issue is.

There’s loads explaining why.

Why would she do that? She/he have always been used to refer to women(girls)/men(boys). That doesn't change just because I believe gender is a load of sexist crap and I refuse to subscribe to it.

Catiette · 06/10/2024 20:52

(Waits in corner, hoping she's not being given the silent treatment for asking overly difficult questions again...

Also hoping for a rapid reply as she needs to go to bed very soon... 😅)

''Man'' just means to be an adult male. Thats all it means. Its not a judgement, its a statement of observable fact.

There are only two types of gametes. Which one you produce, ultimately determines your sex.

And man and woman have always been terms relating to sex, not ''gender''.

Yeah, but the trans lobby don't accept that - they want to make out that it is literally possible for a human to actually change sex. So unless you have cis / trans on forms etc, you're not going to get accurate answers.

Cis just means not trans - getting worked up about it is like bellowing it outrage "I'm not NOT FRENCH, I'm BRITISH!!!. You're both.

What adjective would you prefer for someone who is not transgender where the difference is important if you need to capture this information?

Sex at birth is easy to ask

Problem is those who insist by not being trans, I'm agreeing with gender stereotypes - I do not and never have.

And it narrows the bandwith of what it means to be a woman to say these tropes, these ''feelings'' are what makes one a woman. Its demonstrably untrue. And hurtful to those little girls growing up - like I once did - disliking themselves for not ''being feminine enough''.

So I hate the term ''cis'' For more reasons than one, defining women on biology makes the most sense and is the most compassionate.

SpudleyLass · 06/10/2024 20:56

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 20:55

She is a woman, no prefix needed.

Catiette · 06/10/2024 20:57

Cis doesn't deal with the dilemma I present, @DadJoke.

(Nor did the offensively disingenuous "Wot, who sez Afghan women aren't oppressed?")

Why don't you tell us TransDadjoke? You seem to enjoy telling women what we should and shouldn't do.

Nope. Ignoring the actual Latin origins of the terms cis/trans, cisgender means you have a gender identity that aligns with your sex. By definition, it cannot include those of us who do not have a gender identity.

Interesting how the definition of the term keeps changing as its flaws are pointed out.

soupfiend · 06/10/2024 20:54

Sex at birth is easy to ask

Sure, but in order to have figures on how many trans employees you have, you would then have to ask, in some form of words, which sex they call themselves now.

The term that describes their sex - so man, or woman.

The whole ideology is based on a house of cards.
