Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

If your sexed body matches up with your gender, and you don't feel any mismatch, then you're cis.
Whether you like the term or not.
It's like someone saying "I'm not straight, I'm just normal! I don't need another word!"

Edited

And if your sexed body matches up with male biology then you are a man, however you like it.

Ok

I wonder if chickens can be trans

Maybe that's the next step in this ludicrous charade.

Chickens go in. Cockerels come out.

Well if furries are a thing then why not allow humans to identify as poultry?

So? I said I didn’t think it was fair for trans women to compete in women’s sports. And there are a few more than I thought, but still not very many. I don’’t think it’s a reason to be so shrilly anti trans.

'Not very many'.

Uh huh.

There are a few of us waiting, then (I won't promise it's patiently!) 😂

Maybe @Puddingcakes can help.

My argument is that it really is "worth getting worked up over" when you realise that we no longer have a word to describe the half of the Afghan population that is, effectively, enslaved, in an accurate, respectful way that doesn't obscure the source of their oppression.

I assume you'd not considered this aspect of redefining the word "woman". (It surely can't be that you'd dismiss that as not being "worth getting worked up over").

@DadJoke, I think I asked you this one on another thread and never got an answer (apologies, may be wrong - it's all becoming a blur). Perhaps you can tackle it.

What should we call this demographic now?

Do you also think that the girls that are forfeiting volleyball matches due to a trans girl playing on the San Jose state team are also being "shrilly anti trans"?

Or are they sticking up for their rights to play in an all girls league?

They’re responding to an individual case. And, as I have said, I don’t think it’s fair that trans women should compete with biological women where their residual muscle and speed gives them an advantage. So, no.

Puddingcakes · 06/10/2024 20:36

ChishiyaBat · 06/10/2024 20:29

There are at least 3 posters like @DadJoke and @Puddingcakes in the last 2 pages who clearly have not read the last 30 pages, or maybe they did, but still wanted to tell women we are wrong for objecting to cis.

You are wrong. It’s a descriptive word, not some kind of slur 😂 so silly

No they’re not - that’s the “other” option. (Although most people have an internal sense of their gender - it’s why they no longer operate on intersex children until they are old enough to decide for themselves.)

Edited

The word "other" suggests you have one of whatever is being asked about.

I don't have a gender identity full stop. I am not trans, I am not cis, I do not have some other gender identity.

Prefer not to say is equally unsuitable. Prefer not to say assumes you have a gender identity but are not willing to share what it is.

The people oppressed in Afghanistan? Women.

Is there someone saying women aren’t being oppressed in Afghanistan?

FrippEnos · 06/10/2024 20:37

I know! Waiting to see if we hit the trifecta of shrill/hysterical/silly.

I think that we are just waiting on hysterical now.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 20:38

Why would that be the case?

''Man'' is also a descriptive word, describing the male anatomy.

Yet, have the backbone to call trans identified males this and all hell breaks loose.

But if women object to even the slightest disrespect, we are told we are overreacting.

Catiette · 06/10/2024 20:38

Yesssss!

Thank you, @DadJoke - I was beginning to feel like when it was my turn to be given the silent treatment at school!

Hang on, and I'll re-post my original question, as you miss the point slightly as it was only paraphrased above...

DadJoke · 06/10/2024 20:37

The people oppressed in Afghanistan? Women.

Is there someone saying women aren’t being oppressed in Afghanistan?

And on what basis is their oppression, is the point.

Do you think they are oppressed because they have long hair or flowing robes?

Because that would be silly.

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:18

No issue with transgender women have worked with them before, but the fact they’re transgender does not make me a cis woman

The fact that you're a cis woman makes you one. As am I. All this idiocy about it being a slur is just that, idiocy. Transphobic idiocy at that.

NewFriendlyLadybird · 06/10/2024 20:39

FrippEnos · 06/10/2024 20:36

No. I respond to individuals and individual cases.

SinnerBoy · 06/10/2024 20:39

Manxexile · Today 17:51

Why was that observation transphobic?
What is your definition of transphobic and how does that observation meet it?

Ah now, the explanation is simple. You simply need to start from the premise "Everything is transphobic." If someone disagrees that you need to turn left and not right, then you are a TRANSPHOBIC BIGOT!!!

And by stating facts we’re shrill, silly, hysterical - all pretty derogatory language with more than a hint of misogyny

How can one be cis if they don't know what their ''gender'' is supposed to be?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 20:40

No, it's like a Catholic telling an atheist they'll pray for their soul even after being told they don't believe in god

Exactly. Or that you'll go to hell.

Great, so to protect women's sport as a separate category that is for biological women only we need a term for biological women, for centuries the word in English has been woman. If we allow woman to mean woman and some men how do we prevent some men from playing women's sport?
