Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

gender role, a culturally and socially determined set of expected behaviors, attitudes, and characteristics based on concepts of masculinity and femininity. A gender role should not be confused with gender identity, which refers to an individual’s internal sense of being masculine, feminine, on a spectrum between the two, a gender unrelated to that binary, or no gender at all.

Gender role was a term coined by a sexologist in the 1950s.

Gender identity | Definition, Theories, & Facts | Britannica

Gender identity, an individual’s self-conception as a man or woman or as a boy or girl or as some combination of man/boy and woman/girl or as someone fluctuating between man/boy and woman/girl or as someone outside those categories altogether. Gender i...

Why? Trans men need smears too, on account of being born female and therefore more than likely to have a womb.
The letter includes me and you (women, not trans) and makes trans men feel comfortable too.
Why potentially alienate then and make them not want a smear/to think they won't be treated with compassion and care too?

Do trans men take leave of their senses and forget they are female?

Everyone has personal responsibility to care for their own health. The language used to describe women in healthcare doesn't need to be altered to accommodate people who chose to reject the sex they are born into.

Why can't we just be 'Woman' or 'Transwoman'?

Because some transwomen want to be just "women"

MotherJessAndKittens · 06/10/2024 15:46

What does "cis" mean? Never heard it before.

It's a Latin prefix, co-opted by a social science researcher in 1994 to make women a subset of their own sex class.

Don't they all??
But why should their desire the claim a word be more important than actual meanings?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 15:51

I want to have a million pounds and be 21 again. We can't always have what we want.

It's inaccurate, basic facts are wrong.

The second definition is incoherent.

Do you not have an idea of your own beyond Google? There's no point in copying and pasting rubbish from Google.

Everyone knows what ‘cis’ means. It means ‘born as’ - just tick that and get on with your day. So sick of people making a fuss when there is no fuss to be made about things like this. Be thankful that you were born the sex that you identify with.
So much unnecessary hate and nonsense around all this. Worry about actual issues going on in the world.

and yes, I am a woman, ‘cis’ woman, female, girl, senorita, Mrs, Ms, Miss, whatever - who cares?

Oh the irony 🙄 "I look like a man but I present as a woman how dare you misgender me" wah wah. Versus, as you say yourself, real issues in the world.

If you are nor a trans woman then you are a cis woman
Get over it.

Hilarious. So we are all expected to respect that men who present as women are women and respect their desired pronouns etc but you are happy to totally ignore our wish to be called a woman?

You're calling the Encyclopedia Britannica incoherent and wrong? Is that because it doesn't fit in with your ideological nonsense?

ChishiyaBat · 06/10/2024 15:53

See this thread is what happens when we mangle the language and are told to be kind. If you are a man you can never be a woman, if you are a woman you can never be a man. It doesn't matter how you feel, what bollocks prefix you put on the words woman and man.
You want to identify as something else you crack on, just don't infringe on the rights of others or tell me or anyone else that sex doesn't matter.

That’s an interesting point about the black-and-white thing. I don’t think anyone’s minded putting white have they? Thank you that’s made me think a bit

But actually, these days, you dont just have white or black. You have british white, american white, black african, black caribbean. And for me, I always have to go with "other white" because the specific place I am from isnt listed.

I find this is the same thing. Why get so bent out of shape about the cis thing? Just get over yourself. No one is denying you are a woman.

If you're not trans then you're cis. I honestly don't even know what you think it means?!

No, because that implies that everyone is happy to buy into the gender ideology and indulge in that belief, which many people are not.

ilovesooty · 06/10/2024 15:54

SanctusInDistress · 06/10/2024 15:29

Did they have cis man as an option too or just for women?

Yes they did. The OP said so.

Right there (the post I was referring to) - women - it literally says women.
Nothing has been changed. I haven't magically been erased.
I'm catered for, why can't trans men be recognised too?
I'm sure they still know they have a womb and haven't "somehow forgot" !

None of those impact on your everyday life.

Accepting Cis is, as someone wrote upthread, accepting that some men are women and the removal of single sex spaces, rape crisis support and sport.

No thank you.

I do not believe that trans women are women, that is because they are men.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 15:56

Just get over yourself. No one is denying you are a woman.

Is that what you tell trans people when they whinge about "misgendering"?

Also, it's not about whether anyone denies I am woman, I don't care. I am a woman because I'm female. It's about rejecting the belief system which says that woman doesn't mean female.

Cis does impact on people's lives though. For a movement so keen on empowering self identification it doesn't like being told to respect people's identities.

trans men ARE women, it is the only way you can be a trans men.

If they choose not to attend smears then they opt to potentially face future serious medical consequences.

We shouldn't have to pander to people's beliefs, there is no other situation where we do this. We do not have to go along with the anorexics belief they are fat. We do not go along with any form of racial appropriation because it is seen to be racist and akin to blackface. People who believe in gender are no different. They are appropriating something they are not.

We do not have to pander to their delusions.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 15:58

It does affect my life, because it's someone else's ideology. I am not going to be defined in the terms of gender identity ideology any more than Scientology.

You're implying there are subsets of women, there arent, there are women, biological women

You're implying that gender is by default something everyone has and everyone believes it, its not a universal concept or belief, dont foist that on me without my consent

You also misgendger me by forcing me to use a descriptor for myself that doesnt apply.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/10/2024 16:01

I was responding to a reply to ASGIRC which has been removed presumably becuase it is against talk guidleines but here's the response:

I'm not transphobic I don't fear or hate trans people. I just don't believe that men are women because they say so because that is nonsense and harms women as a sex class.

Cis doesn't exist, it's a made up word to 'other' women who do not believe in your gender beliefs.

And by the way being gender critical is a protected belief, so I'd watch what you are posting because calling women cis is against the talk guidelines.

ChishiyaBat · 06/10/2024 16:02

@ASGIRC It is not transphobic to believe that people cannot change sex! As for cis not impacting peoples lives this thread is telling you it is, you don't get to decide what impacts other people.
