Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

It's like complaining about being asked to identify your race and foaming at the mouth because "just because she's a black woman doesn't mean I'm a white woman". It's ludicrous.

No, it's more like being asked about your religion, with the only option for if you don't believe in a Christian God (for example) being 'heathen'.
If the label does not fit within your belief system (or lack thereof), and you are not comfortable with it, you should not be forced to identify with it.

'Cis' means that your gender matches your biological sex.
If you do not believe in gender you should not be forced to accept 'cis' as a label.

I don't mind saying 'none' if the gender question is additional to a relevant question about sex, but it becomes difficult when sex and gender are conflated. Forcing women to identify as either 'trans' or 'cis' means there is no option for people who are female but do not have a 'gender identity', because this is not something they personally believe in.

@namechange

They came from Google - aka you have no idea.

There is no difference.

Your googling has failed to educate you on basic scientific fact but don't let that stop you from answering questions on forums by typing the words into googling and copying and pasting the first answer you see.

This is why the whole debate is stupid. There's zero point arguing with people too lazy or stupid or to think about how ridiculously misogynist their casual anti-female stance is and then claim as a defence of their argument something they looked up for 2 seconds.

Gender means sex up until about the year 2000.

The new definition is nonsense and allowing for them to be different results in there being no clear definition of either.
However the original poster that I actually asked the question of has still failed to answer.

What a surprise.

What are you waffling on about. I gave you the dictionary definitions of sex and gender.

Jaxhog · 06/10/2024 15:32

Why can't we just be 'Woman' or 'Transwoman'?

FrippEnos · 06/10/2024 15:33

kitsuneghost · 06/10/2024 14:56

If you are nor a trans woman then you are a cis woman
Get over it.

you are mis-gendering people and that is literal violence.

sex, Sum of features by which a member of a plant or animal species can be placed into one of two complementary reproductive groups, male or female. In both plants and animals, sex is determined by the reproductive cells (gametes) produced by the organism. The male produces sperm cells, and the female produces egg cells. Males and females may or may not have apparent structural differences, but they always have functional, hormonal, and chromosomal differences. Patterns of behaviour, sometimes elaborate, may also distinguish the sexes in some species. See also reproductive behaviour.

Not really just means you don't identify with their options

I think OP was just joking and having a laugh.

supercalie · 06/10/2024 15:35

There's no coherent definition of gender or sex as different things.

How come pregnant women don't have "sex reveal" parties? Plenty have gender reveal parties.

So this imagination that gender only has this homogenous meaning whatever pseudo nonsense someone has come out with and forced onto society through threats of cancellation is simply imaginary.

No gender reveal party for a foetus has ever asked the foetus if it feels like a woman. Gender doesn't have the meaning you think.

That doesn’t make any sense. Your race is not relative to anyone else’s, it is an objective fact. Same for sex. The fact that someone else wants to create a new name for a category of male doesn’t change the fact that we are women.

‘Cis’ is offensive to many including me so please be respectful of that.

As women we are being trolled by a small section of society whose poison has seeped out and taken hold and id be bl**dy fuming if that was me
I was angry enough with my letter for a smear saying “for women and people with womb “
honestly … it’s disrespectful and disgraceful to biological born women. A scientific fact we are women

Why? Trans men need smears too, on account of being born female and therefore more than likely to have a womb.
The letter includes me and you (women, not trans) and makes trans men feel comfortable too.
Why potentially alienate then and make them not want a smear/to think they won't be treated with compassion and care too?

A significant number of women find the term ‘cis’ to be offensive. I am among them.

it implies that there are two types of women, which we know is nonsense as it is impossible to change sex.
it’s just an attempt to manipulate language in order to support a particular ideology.

FrippEnos · 06/10/2024 15:37

NewFriendlyLadybird · 06/10/2024 15:12

They do. You don’t.

They really don't

NewGreenDuck · 06/10/2024 15:38

And they remain female. No one changes sex. If people understood that there would be fewer issues.

MumblesParty · 06/10/2024 15:38

Scutterbug · 06/10/2024 13:25

There really are bigger hills to die on.

I don’t think there are. Erasing women is a pretty big hill.

supercalie · 06/10/2024 15:38

While I identify as someone incredibly rich I'm unfortunately really being discriminated against at the Mazzerati shop when they won't give me the car that I identify as having paid for.

Nobody is forcing them to hand me the keys just because I identify as having purchased the car.

MumblesParty · 06/10/2024 15:39

I would refuse to complete the survey.

kolalumps · 06/10/2024 15:40

user1471538283 · 06/10/2024 15:27

No this drives me mad. I refuse to have my identity changed to serve any agenda. I'm a woman.

If you identify as trans that's up to you but I am not and I have never been cis.

100%
I don’t identify as CIS, always been a female woman and not gonna change now.

Waitwhat23 · 06/10/2024 15:40

The compelled language aspect of it is troublesome as well. Women saying 'no, I'm not being arbitrarily redefined against my will' is met with quite astounding footstamping.

No, I will not call myself 'cis'. It is an ideological nonsense. Footstamp as much as you like.

IAmAWarriorPrincessHonestGuv · 06/10/2024 15:40

Waitingforthecold · 06/10/2024 13:56

For the purpose of the survey you’re filling out, you’re a cisgendered woman. It’s semantics. The fact you’re getting remotely wound up about it suggests you do in fact have an issue with trans people and how them becoming more visible in society is changing the language we use.

do it feel upsetting to have the identity you relate to most denied? 😉

Except that woman isn’t an ‘identity’ it’s just a fact. This is where we get when people start denying reality and claiming that facts are less important than feelings.

LilasPrettyCafe · 06/10/2024 15:43

Yalta · 06/10/2024 15:17

Why would they want to know that?

This interfering and prying has to stop. It is beginning to sound more and more like some ridiculous fiction novel set in some future world where no one a generation ago would believe this would ever become reality

We were told it’s so they can study social mobility based on what ‘grade/level’ our role is in the company compared to whatever ‘grade/level’ suppose they assign to our parents based on the information we gave them. The data collected on us is a concern to me.

I can't make sense of this, what do you even mean?

Bringing race into this argument is so typical. You can't conflate the two separate issues!

Also if you're gonna compare somehow to race, there are already perfectly good options there for everyone- male, female, transgender. No need to add ridiculous prefix to a perfectly ordinary term/ meaning. So it doesn't compare to any kind of race thing surely

supercalie · 06/10/2024 15:43

Don't be thick. Your definition is incoherent and inaccurate nonsense.

Which dictionary is it from?

supercalie · 06/10/2024 15:44

The concept of gender being separate from sex was invented in a way that allows men to remove rights from women.

That's its purpose.

First definition is from the front page of Googlez arguably not a reliable source, but the Second definition is from the Encyclopedia Britannica.

What does "cis" mean? Never heard it before.
