Survey at work using the term cis woman

1000 replies

SuzanneRogers · 06/10/2024 13:16

So I filled all the survey, very happy at work, public secror.
Note that this survey is outsourced by another survey organisation.

Then I come to the last bit please describe your role in the organisation, did that, and then how would you describe your sex or gender?

( Can’t remember exactly how the question was phrased )but the only option for women was “cis woman.”

Quite cross about this and I’m not sure how to best articulate this to my managers who, to be fair never use this term and will not have had any input to designing the survey. Any input welcome.

A question, for all those arguing that the word "woman" should now include transwomen and that "cis-" works for the rest of us.

There's a group of people in Afghanistan who can't leave their homes unsupervised, and whose voices mustn't be heard in public.

What should we call them?

Women?

The UN should tell them to don trousers and a shirt and tell the world they're not women they're men! That should fix it.

It would be interesting to see stats for rates of transgenderism in Afghanistan.

If you're not trans then you're cis. I honestly don't even know what you think it means?!

Ah no - easy mistake for you to make if you don’t understand what it means but actually there aren’t different sub categories of women 😊.

You clearly have no idea what it means.

LilasPrettyCafe · 06/10/2024 15:10

I dislike the pressure we get put under to complete these surveys at work. I refused to do it last year as it was so biased towards returning staff to working in the office ie select either “are you a team player who’s happy to return to working in an office full time?” Or “are you focused more on your personal needs by continuing to work from home”. It was bullshit and I wasn’t complying with that. This year they’ve added lots of questions about our parents jobs, education levels etc and I answered “prefer not to say” to every single personal question.

supercalie · 06/10/2024 14:24

There isn't any difference until circa 2000.

I don't use the meaning of gender beyond this point in time. It's meaningless so why bother. Nobody can define it so it's a worthless term.

Prior to 2000 it meant "sex".

No it didn’t. Gender and sex have always been two different things.

Everyone knows what ‘cis’ means. It means ‘born as’ - just tick that and get on with your day. So sick of people making a fuss when there is no fuss to be made about things like this. Be thankful that you were born the sex that you identify with.
So much unnecessary hate and nonsense around all this. Worry about actual issues going on in the world.

and yes, I am a woman, ‘cis’ woman, female, girl, senorita, Mrs, Ms, Miss, whatever - who cares?

This
Born as a woman and identify as a woman gender wise as well.
Which is what cis means. Where both match up.

Strangely enough gay people in Iran are often forced/ encouraged to be trans.

Yes, they have always meant different things. Unfortunately, we became very sensitive and started using gender as a synonym for sex due to the fact sex can also refer to sexual intercourse.

If you're not trans, you are not trans. It doesn't make you anything else.

I don't have Christian faith but I don't put "heathen" in the religion box because that would imply that I believed in something that I didn't.

Partylikeits1985 · 06/10/2024 15:14

It's like complaining about being asked to identify your race and foaming at the mouth because "just because she's a black woman doesn't mean I'm a white woman". It's ludicrous

Well not really. Woman means female. We shouldn’t need cis to indicate that the female is biologically female.
I have no issue with trans women ticking woman/female as their gender but this whole trans/cis thing is annoying.

Sex - either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and most other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions.
"adults of both sexes"

Gender - the male sex or the female sex, especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones, or one of a range of other identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.
"the singer has opted to keep the names and genders of her twins private"

Scutterbug · 06/10/2024 13:25

There really are bigger hills to die on.

I don't think there are. If we go along with this we are colluding with wiping out women as a significant political force - barely 100 years after we got the right to vote.

AmeliaEarache · 06/10/2024 15:15

if you’re a person who still identifies with the sex you were born as, you’re coming from a place of privilege.
hahahahahahaha
Tell that to the women living under repressive regines across the world - let's start with Afghanistan.

You can use... it to bitch and moan about things that have no real bearing on your existence.
My rights under the law have a very significant bearing on my existence. Rdifining transwomen as women undermines thos rights

if trans people are the most protected members of society like some of you have suggested, why are literal children being murdered?
They aren't. One teen was horrifically murdered, but that was the first murder of a trans person in the UK for several years.

You’ll find sensationalised stories if you seek them out.
Quite. See above.

Fact of the matter is, everyone just wants to live in a way that makes them happy and comfortable and free from hate.
I don't hate any of the trans and non-binary people I know. They don't hate me. Ditto the Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Hindu people I know. You can disagree with someone's beliefs and not want the implications of that belief enshrined in secular law and still not hate anyone.

Unfortunately choices have to be made about who to stand up for
I choose women and girls. You may choose otherwise.

I think I've answered all of @Waitingforthecold 's points, but if I've missed any, I apologise.

That seems clear.

So, re: my question about what we call that group in Afghanistan....

Would you say they're all cis-women?

I'm a bit concerned that that suggests that a transman over there would be treated as a male, as I don't understand that to be the case.

It also worries me that a good proportion of people over there wouldn't understand what's meant by the westernised concept of cis, and see it as rather colonialist of us to use it for them...

No. The use of the word "cis" is a construct being pushed by the rabid misogynist trans mob. It isn't acceptable to be referred to using their demeaning terms for women. I care about preserving our pronouns and our single sex spaces and rights. Surrendering to men who want to diminish what it means to be a woman is never acceptable and I will never surrender or accept being degraded and demeaned like this.

Exactly why are we suddenly being defined by whether or not we’re trans.
