Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

Also I know there are a lot of Tory party members on this thread who are used to voting for a new Prime Minister every 5 minutes. FYI that's not normal and those days are gone now.

I think they tried to prepare by getting Sue Gray in but she has proved a distraction.

Look, I’m no Tory apologist, but they couldn’t use pensioners who are visibly poor as they will get pension credits and fuel support. They had to use the ‘inbetween’ of well off and poor. Those who, apparently like the one gentleman, relying solely on his and his wife’s state pension, but who may have bought a decent little house in his lifetime when it was possible to get a mortgage.

Do you think that the woman in the big house with the expensive-looking furnishings represents the 'in-between' of well-off and poor?

All I saw was that we were granny killers and had to save granny, maybe you were on different threads to me

There were thousands of covid threads, so it is very likely!

YourLastNerve · 06/10/2024 12:50

Bugger off, they are fine! They are what I voted for and are doing what I expected them to do.

Whoosh there you go

What I take from that is that the right wing media have unfortunately been successful in hounding her out of office. What a pathetic country we are.

toopytoo · 06/10/2024 12:53

Can you imagine how unstable society would become if we swapped out the PM and chancellor every time they mentioned a policy you don't like? Get real.

ChampaignSupernova · 06/10/2024 12:53

It's a bit premature calling for their departure. The budget hasn't even been released yet (not that I have high hoped for it). I don't think any government can get us out this mess in 4 years but I'm interested to see what they pull out the bag in the next few weeks.

ilovesooty · 06/10/2024 12:54

cardibach · 06/10/2024 12:39

By what mechanism will they be gone?
Did any Tory PM go as a direct consequence of the many deaths directly caused by their benefits policies?

Or their covid policies?

StaunchMomma · 06/10/2024 12:54

Oh do fuck oooooofffff!!!

They've had five bloody minutes! How about people just let them get on with it and stop trying to tear them down every 5 seconds!

It's desperate and BORING!!

Not for me they aren't.
Sorry to keep banging on about it but we've just got to get better candidates standing for election. How we do that I don't know.
At my last local election we had the usual selection of retired Tories, Blue haired Greens and frankly just odd Lib Dems. The turnout was woeful, except for one ward, where a local family man was standing (I can't remember what party), he was such a breath of fresh air and was just so normal! I admired him for standing - he won by a landslide with a huge turnout for that one ward. There is certainly an appetite for change.

WhatsitWiggle · 06/10/2024 12:59

@Whenwillitgetwarm what "simple policy changes" that will deliver "quick wins" without costing anything do you propose?

I think we're all still feeling the fallout of the last PM to deliver sweeping change in the first few days in power without proper consideration. Liz Truss is hardly a good role model.

No surprise there. Sounds like all of the other rumours must be true as well then.

Op, if we have a cold winter and the excess death rate among pensioners rises significantly, KS & RR will be directly and personally responsible and they'll be gone by March.

I agree that Labour has better talent.

If we have a very cold winter, those who are entitled will still get cold weather payments

Here's one. Stop MPs accepting gifts just like the Civil Service. Cost the taxpayers nothing.

Why on earth would the resignation of someone who has been hounded by the right wing for years mean any other bonkers rumour is true?
Johnsons was banging on about her again - and yet nobody challenged any of her covid findings, did they? He was trying to suggest she’d been biased in that report. Disgraceful behaviour, but no more than I expect from him.

Borgonzola · 06/10/2024 13:06

Why is it that the previous government had 14 years and 4 elections to make an entire pig's ear of everything and yet less than 3 months into this government people are already baying for blood?

And would change nothing for the population either.
Though I do agree it should be done.

But the population would be able to see they were delivering on their pledge of integrity, wouldn't you say? So fulfilling a pledge they have made. Building a level of trust......

You didn’t listen carefully enough. He didn’t say they relied solely on the state pension.

Username056 · 06/10/2024 13:12

As a project manager, I used to dread someone very senior at work suggesting “quick wins”. They usually turned out to be far from quick and cost multiples of the original estimate.

Edited

This part of the population doesn’t see properly declared gifts as an integrity issue. I don’t think it’s appropriate, but nobody has broken any rules or compromised integrity here.

You mean rumours like he's got a secret second family? Or that he's gay? Or that he's living with Elvis on the moon?

Those rumours?

Hmmm
