Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

What I take from that is that the right wing media have unfortunately been successful in hounding her out of office. What a pathetic country we are.

Looks that way. She’d become the story and back room staff are fatally wounded when that happens. Good to know she’ll still have influence.

hairbearbunches · 06/10/2024 13:15

They spent the period since 2015 plotting to get rid of Corbyn and install themselves and now they’ve managed it, solely due to FPTP because Farage split the right wing vote, they have no actual ideas. All they were focused on was neutering the left wing and getting their own snouts back in the trough. Tinkering around the edges, not scaring the establishment horses and bugger all else.

Not my Labour Party.

This part of the population doesn’t see properly declared gifts as an integrity issue. I don’t think it’s appropriate, but nobody has broken any rules or compromised integrity here.

But declaring 'properly declared' gifts just isn't working is it? Too many MPs are 'missing dealines', 'filing in the incorrect category' or ' being incorrectly advised'.
No MP needs a trip to Ibiza, a quiet flat for his son, rolls of wallpaper, Taylor Swift tickets or Football tickets. None of that is required to govern the country. THE CIVIL SERVICE ARENT ALLOWED GIFTS - WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT or MPs?

“Your” Labour Party was content to be out of power to the end of time. There was zero point in its existence.

This has to be the most stupid/naive thing I’ve ever read. You must be a Tory @2dogsandabudgie 😂

No idea why you have tagged me in this post. I didn't say that.

You didn’t listen carefully enough. He didn’t say they relied solely on the state pension.

Piano woman worked 'for many years' as a teacher,

The Tory line for years was always that teachers had gold plated pensions. And now it's not enough to live off and she needs state hand-outs?

The 2017 Labour Party lost Theresa May her majority. If the right wing of Labour had stopped having a hissy fit and pulled together they could have been in govt. and Boris Johnson and the absolute shithousery we’ve endured since could all have been avoided.

Corbyn - whatever his faults were and are - would have stopped the freebies and corporate donations. They didn’t want that.

Can you imagine how unstable society would become if we swapped out the PM and chancellor every time they mentioned a policy you don't like? Get real.

So let's get some better candidates (of any party) that are up to the job?

2dogsandabudgie · 06/10/2024 13:27

noblegiraffe · 06/10/2024 12:23

Oh, but she has room for a piano and a sideboard. I don't see how you can possibly look at that room and think it is the room of someone struggling for space. Or money, tbh.

This is not a person who is living in a one-bed flat, as suggested upthread.

You have absolutely no idea what size house or flat she has from those photos. She could live in a 2 bedroom bungalow. That room could be a lounge/diner for all you know.

Would you have felt better if they'd all been dressed in rags?

Hounding people out of office was established as a good sport for last gov. Labour rode on that to get in, probably more than actual ability

Trouble is they are getting the same. Hard to turn off the media plus SM

Hounded out office or jumped ship? Do we know?

Bugger off, they are fine! They are what I voted for and are doing what I expected them to do.

What have they done?

Even supporters like Richard Murphy and other voices are disillusioned with the lack of economic direction from the Labour Party. I understand that Brexit has affected certain regions and demographics, but what are they going to do? It's a difficult choice for the government, as there is very little return on investment from any expenditures.

When Blair came into power, he brought a sense of optimism to the country. All we've had so far is a lack of positivity, and the deputy PM partying in Ibiza while trying to explain away her actions in a typical disrespectful manner (Chav). Sue Grey moving isn't a great sign either.

Labour has been waiting for nearly 2 decades. So far they've been a disappointment.

If we are quibbling, the end of her dining room is dark, suggesting a wall, rather than opening onto her nice bright airy lounge that we see in another clip.

Do you think that someone on a teacher's pension is just above the cut off for winter fuel allowance?

Sesma · 06/10/2024 13:56

We have had Tory central office but no one has mentioned bots yet

Look, I’m no Tory apologist, but they couldn’t use pensioners who are visibly poor as they will get pension credits and fuel support. They had to use the ‘inbetween’ of well off and poor. Those who, apparently like the one gentleman, relying solely on his and his wife’s state pension, but who may have bought a decent little house in his lifetime when it was possible to get a mortgage.

As @BIossomtoes said. Listen very carefully. He said "as my wife and myself are on a state pension". Very careful wording because the Tories know that if these are real people rather than actors a lot of digging will go on re: accuracy.

CassieMaddox · 06/10/2024 14:04

Sesma · 06/10/2024 12:16

I live in a 3 bed, well 2.5 bed, 1930s house that is probably worth about £270k-£300k, not extended and my dining room is probably just under 4m by just over 4m, it's one of those knocked through to the lounge type houses, lounge is about the same size. if I got rid of my sideboard a piano could sit there instead.

OK, so not a "small house" then. A fairly averaged size house.

What have they done?
Ended the strikes
Started planning to bring rail back into public ownership
Implemented buffer zones around abortion clinics
Means tested WFA ( I disagree with the threshold but I do not think it should be universal - older people need to join working age and disabled people in taking their share of the tough times)
Accepted pay review body recommendations for public sector pay awards and implemented them
Started legislation for improving workers' rights (announcement due ThursdayS
Started grown up conversations with the EU instead of treating them like 'the enemy' (and no, I'm not expecting miracles, but it's going to take careful baby steps while the electorate learn to accept that their Brexit was a bloody stupid idea).

Not bad for a government in office for 3 months with a summer recess and a conference included in that.

Referring to the deputy PM as 'a chav' says more about you than about her - people are allowed to holiday any way they want to.

Zonder · 06/10/2024 14:12

2dogsandabudgie · 06/10/2024 11:15

By Labour's own admission they have said that if the WFA was scrapped then something like 4,000 pensioners would die from cold. I cannot think why they thought that pension credit being the cut off point was a good idea. Age Concern UK have said that over 2 million pensioners will be affected by this low cut off point.

And that's why they're not scrapping the WFA.

Zonder · 06/10/2024 14:13

Go for it. No doubt some people on here won't like it because they disagree that all or any of these are good thing, but disagreement is fine.
I'm just getting so bloody tired of the toddler behaviour of people wanting transformational change from a government that's barely got its feet under the table. And they can't even see how pathetic that behaviour is, they genuinely think they're reasonable. I really do hold the media responsible, they've trained us into expecting instant gratification all the time.
