Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

Laugh away but you know I can’t be the only person becoming frustrated with them and thinking like this. So stick your fingers in your ears all you like, but the noise will escalate and topple them over if they don’t reset course soon. If it’s a problem getting their message out then they need to fire their comms people and get better ones.

…and of course I was being tongue in cheek regarding going on a strategic leadership course. Nevertheless if they can’t lead now and lack political nous I can’t see when they will.

Oh no @Whenwillitgetwarm you’re not the only one. Most of the mainstream predominantly right wing media is up there with you plus the millions who cannot be arsed doing any research and think Rome can be built in a day. If it took 14 years to trash things, how long to repair ?
It really is concerning to see the short term thinking going on in this country as well as a lack of bloody common sense.

CassieMaddox · 06/10/2024 10:50

It is good. Shows what assumptions do.

howshouldibehave · 06/10/2024 10:50

No thanks! I’m quite happy with who we’ve got.

I can’t be the only person becoming frustrated with them and thinking like this.

Just how huge swathes of us have felt for the last 14 years then, really.

That is what happened when you vote just to get the Tories out. Labour is worse and the potential replacements for the current PM and chancellor much much worse. Let’s be honest KS was put in there to deceive the people from the extremists in the Labour party. You needed him but most people knew we would be here. However, even I am surprised it was so very soon they made a mess. There were comments of Labour not having a plan before the election. The replies were whoever it would be better than the evil Tories. I frankly find the new minister of education both crazy and evil. Angela Raymer crazy and clueless and David Lammy thick and an asshole so not sure if we want to call for changes.

Well, with a measured and thoughtful critique like that you certainly have won me over to your way of thinking.

Surprised about all the hate Bridget Philipson is getting here - as a teacher I think she's a massive improvement on the most recent incumbents of her role, absolutely massive.

My hubby is a pensioner. We live in a mortgage free 5 bedroom home he has the state pension and a private pension. He still works very PT. I work FT. We do NOT need the winter fuel allowance!

It's not all about you though, is it

@Whenwillitgetwarm Jesus, let us have our tea and toast before starting your shite at this ungodly hour.
Didn’t you quaff enough port after your partridge last night?

Darling, they can no longer afford to run the aga to roast their partridge thanks to beastly Labour putting fuel prices up.

That may be the case but there’s not exactly anyone waiting in Labour that will not be worse is there?

Suhbataar · 06/10/2024 10:55

What on earth have people got against Bridget Phillipson? She's the first education minister we've had in memory who actually seems interested in the problems plaguing out education system.

conniefromaccounts · 06/10/2024 10:55

They have t had a chance yet. I'm not a Starmer fan but come on, give the bloke some time!

sleepwouldbenice · 06/10/2024 10:57

Jesus no

Didn't vote for them but they've done lots of positive things so far.

But they are being drowned out by other things

Rooky error not tapering the winter fuel allowance but that's it

I suspect I won't like the messaging in the budget ( I am happy to pay more tax, I do have broad shoulders but changing taxes on pensions doesn't send good message, rather it was income tax) but my key concern is what they spend it on. Let's see

Yerdawasasausagemaker · 06/10/2024 10:59

You voted for these idiots. Buyer’s remorse.

Most unpopular government in such a short time. They utterly shat on the chance to have any kind of honeymoon period and generate some goodwill that is often what happens when you get a new government after 14 years. Two cheeks, same arse.

sums it up:
two tier free loading nepotism cronyism granny harmer expensive energy bills greed not green champagne socialism power mad mendacious thin skinned unprepared politically inept

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 11:00

CassieMaddox · 06/10/2024 10:42

I want to know this too!

Unsure who I think should be in which role out of the others but overall it’s a decent Cabinet in my opinion. Starmer and Reeves shouldn’t be in the two biggest roles. Maybe Starmer in Home Office and Reeves in Work and a pensions? I would consider bringing in Josh Simons or Stella Creasy somewhere.

You must have known this when you voted for them, they weren't suddenly going to give up their posts to someone else. I didn't vote for them by the way

pointythings · 06/10/2024 11:03

I think they've made some mistakes but overall they're heading in the right direction. There should be a taper for the WFA, but it absolutely should not be universal. And just to add to the list by a PP I would also like to mention the implementation (at last!) of buffer zones for abortion clinics and the impending announcement on improving workers' rights.

Honestly, some of the electorate are like a toddler who has missed their nap and wants everything NOW.

Doggymummar · 06/10/2024 11:04

I've just listened to this shit from my 76 year old parents, and I didn't even vote Labour. I don't know where they are getting the propaganda from but it's worrying. 90 days is no time to undo the mess left, it will take years. My dad has just been to A&E and an overnight in hospital and the paramedic trainee told him she pays £9250 for uni, works 4 days a week for free at the hospital, two days at uni and does nightshifts for money, the student nurses said they have the same. I said to my dad this didn't happen in the last 90 days but he wouldn't listen.

Also the nurses told him losing the WFA has caused a rise in filthy people turning up at the hospital as they can't afford the hot water to wash. If this is true, then it's premature, the allowance hasn't been taken away yet, people trash talking is what causes unrest. I say sit quiet and wait and see.

Presumably that it should be means tested, why is that hard to fathom?

Harvestfestivalknickers · 06/10/2024 11:07

Chancellor - Someone with the intelligence of previous chancellors, Lamont, Brown, Lawson, Clarke ? I can't see anyone of that calibre.

SallyWD · 06/10/2024 11:08

Definitely not. Ridiculous idea after only 3 months.

2dogsandabudgie · 06/10/2024 11:08

@Zonder - The cut off point is too low, or are you happy that only pensioners who receive pension credit will get the WFA?

2dogsandabudgie · 06/10/2024 11:08

@Zonder - The cut off point is too low, or are you happy that only pensioners who receive pension credit will get the WFA?

Nope. I totally agree the cut off is too low, and I think it should be tapered. But it's presented as if all pensioners are going to lose it and the poorest will all die. And it's a good eal better than what the Tories did for pensioners!

2dogsandabudgie · 06/10/2024 11:11

Doggymummar · 06/10/2024 11:07

Nobody is saying that pensioners who can afford holidays and give their WFA away each year should get it, but people are angry because the cut off point is too low.

itsgettingweird · 06/10/2024 11:12

Thread
Ive this make me laugh and extremely sceptical.

I'm not affiliated to any party and have voted for all 3 main ones in the past.

This one's lead me to the sceptical and cynical conclusion that it's another Tory bot posting because they are scared that Starmer and Reeves are more centre right than the apparent centre right Tory party. And they know Angela Rayner would be the replacement for PM and she's quarter left wing so it gives them even more media time and space to make shite up.

I actually really like Rayner and think she'd make a great leader and I'm not even particularly left wing! I love the fact that she's normal, represents us, sticks her fingers up to doubters, enjoys her life and when she speaks you can't help but feel it's the absolute honest truth.

But I certainly don't think changing PM and Chancellor before a budget is a good idea. I also can't see what he's done that's totally wrong. Don't agree with WFA cut off or free glasses and clothes. But both were totally legal and acceptable decisions.

I know I voted for them but that doesn’t mean I have to be a permanent cheer leader. I saw some Tories make themselves look deranged agreeing with the increasingly cracked out manure being spouted from Braverman and co because it was ‘their team’.

I’m just not the loyal to any party and sometimes your best friends are critical friends who will tell you when you’re going wrong so you can sort your shit out.

Blindly and loudly agreeing with everything you do just because I supported you over the other lot isn’t my style.
