Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

No you all made that bed you lie in it.

Its all been highly amusing so far.

While I agree that the OP is silly, it makes no sense to say "you lie in it". We all lie in whatever bed the voters choose, whether we personally made it or not. Obviously it affects people differently depending on their position, but it's not a "you made the bed so you lie in it" situation.

(Unless you live abroad and aren't lying in the same bed as the rest of us)

Hi OP. Which two current Labour MPs would you choose to 'swap out' with the PM and Chancellor?

I know they’re not Labour but perhaps the original poster has Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick in mind.

Robotnik · 06/10/2024 10:12

No. I'm not disappointed that they haven't immediately managed to turn the UK into a paradise. They've only just been elected.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 10:15

‘It's. Been. Three. Months.’

I know. For me it’s not about how long they have been in power. Everyone is entitled to a probationary period. It’s their overall clumsiness and lack of political instinct which they should have developed long before now, having been in opposition for so long.

The big flagship policies so far have been so poorly communicated and appear to have lacked research. I never expected them to have everything or even anything fixed by now, but I would have expected an overall strong narrative and some quality ideas announced.

I don’t think it’s a bedding issue, I think it’s a poor leadership issue. Unless you put them both on a strategic leadership course, I can’t see how they will improve.

Op they are bad but who do you want instead?

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2024 10:18

Go on then. Say who you want in power.

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2024 10:18

Great minds Eastern.

DoIWantTo · 06/10/2024 10:19

So fed up with the cries of the Tory’s claiming a new PM is needed after such a short time. You lot might have gone through politician after politician but that’s exactly what the country disliked. Some stability and not to be getting confused on who’s the bloody PM now is what the rest of us would like. And for the toddlers in suits to grow the fuck up and realise they’re not in school anymore.

ChilledBubbles · 06/10/2024 10:20

Am I correct to assume Blossomtoes that you’re not a Boomer, not a pensioner, don’t imagine you will be hit by the budget?

LlynTegid · 06/10/2024 10:20

You can only make a judgment after the budget on 30 October I think. Lack of 'doing politics' and badly timed announcements is not reason to change government ministers.

Zonder · 06/10/2024 10:20

taking away the WFA
No, they've proposed MEANS TESTING it. I'd just like to remind everyone that they haven't proposed a blanket removal of WFA - it gets presented as if even the poorest pensioner will lose it. Plenty of pensioners IRL and on MN said they're up for losing theirs as they don't need it.

Fumbling @Whenwillitgetwarm really?
They've scrapped the Rwanda plan
Negotiated ends of major strikes
Squashed far right riots
Renationalising railways

That's just off the top of my head in 30 seconds.

I am 100% not Tory HQ. I voted Labour. I’m someone who wants this to work. They have a massive majority but are fumbling.

They are only lucky the Tories aren’t learning and are making themselves appear even more crazy and irrelevant. However, once the Tory’s get their act together, return to the centre and focus on governing for the benefit of the country as opposed to just being a pressure group screaming about boats, Labour are toast based on current performance.

I believe this is because the top two and their advisors were hyper focused on getting into power and less focused on the job of governing. They think just not being the Tories is good enough. It isn’t.

Stop worrying and the right wing press and amplified bullshit on X and LBC phone-ins. Focus on actual workable policies not attention grabbers or throwing red meat to various sections of the populace. Show us a strong vision and explain how we’re going to get there.

I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves are the two who can do that based on what I’ve seen so far.

You need to do some research beyond perusing the mail and telegraph. Are you aware of some of the other positive things they’ve done ?
And lol at tories getting their act together. They had 14 years to do something, why are Labour only allowed a few months….

hopeishere · 06/10/2024 10:30

A strategic leadership course? Get real.

I think they tried to prepare by getting Sue Grey in but she has proved a distraction. As has the freebies stuff which they could have avoided.

Their main announcement winter fuel was badly handled (although they didn't u-turn).

I think they need longer to bed in. Also I've no idea who would be better.

LizzieSiddal · 06/10/2024 10:33

That is what happened when you vote just to get the Tories out. Labour is worse and the potential replacements for the current PM and chancellor much much worse. Let’s be honest KS was put in there to deceive the people from the extremists in the Labour party. You needed him but most people knew we would be here. However, even I am surprised it was so very soon they made a mess. There were comments of Labour not having a plan before the election. The replies were whoever it would be better than the evil Tories. I frankly find the new minister of education both crazy and evil. Angela Raymer crazy and clueless and David Lammy thick and an asshole so not sure if we want to call for changes.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 10:41

Laugh away but you know I can’t be the only person becoming frustrated with them and thinking like this. So stick your fingers in your ears all you like, but the noise will escalate and topple them over if they don’t reset course soon. If it’s a problem getting their message out then they need to fire their comms people and get better ones.

…and of course I was being tongue in cheek regarding going on a strategic leadership course. Nevertheless if they can’t lead now and lack political nous I can’t see when they will.

For all those saying it's been 3 months, Labour have been a government in waiting for years. They knew and we knew they were to be the next government. All this being shocked about the 22bn black hole is nonsense. They should have been formulating policy and planning changes way back. I don't see a government on the front foot with a vision. I see a government struggling with inexperience and lack of talent.
