Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

Sue Grey undermined Boris's government and Boris himself via partygate.
Oh, the irony of now being the chief of staff overseeing a bunch of misfits.
John Read claimed the civil service was not fit for purpose, and Cummins also attacked the civil service.
Incompetent nincompoops is being kind.

I'm sorry, how did Sue Grey undermine Boris Johnson and his government? Are you one of those who think they did nothing wrong?

Members of the public are capable of critical thinking - that's where Labour's true challenge lies.

That is definitely up for debate sometimes.

Like him or not, McSweeney has been very successful so far. Hopefully he might sharpen up Labour's comms strategy.

Has he? I think Nigel Farage has been way more instrumental in Labour’s fortunes.

And who appointed Sue Grey to investigate 'Partygate'.- none other than Boris Johnson himself - maybe he should have chosen someone else!

Do tell about them accepting bribes. I haven’t heard that. Link please?
Unless you mean the properly declared gifts, which are properly declared specifically so they can’t be used as bribes. You can’t mean those though, because they haven’t ’come to light’. They’ve been available all along as a document of public record. Anyone can look at them.

Starmer was found guilty of breaching the MP's code of conduct - his interests have certainly not been 'properly declared'. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Not quite the full story, is it? “Minor and inadvertent”.

Sir Keir Starmer

Sir Keir Starmer breached MPs' code of conduct eight times

The Labour leader failed to register eight interests on time, the standards commissioner finds.

"The commissioner initially began to investigate after complaints Sir Keir had failed to register three instances of income and hospitality and then found four further instances of late entries."

The full story is that after being found guilty of multiple breaches and claiming his office processes had been 'reviewed' to ensure this doesn't happen again, over two years later he continues to act in the same way. A man without decency, honesty or integrity.

Completely missing the point. Once the Madame Guillotine has now been removed, yet, like most civil servants, it finds a place on the government shelf.

Could you link to this for me? I seem to remember one quite a while ago where he admitted he’d been late declaring and accepted he’d acted outside the rules. Not this time though, I don’t think.

Sorry, what now? There's so many metphors in that post that I can't see the wood for the trees. I asked you a question: how did Sue Grey undermine Boris Johnson and his government over partygate. An answer would be nice.

That isn’t true either the only reason we know about the gifts and donations now is because he declared them.

it will drive business away

You’re already writing policy for them I see

But yes if you look outside mn pro Labour threads you’ll see plenty of criticism

As for spin sure they do, the toolmaker line worked well enough pre GE. For some on here even.

Never answer the question do you ? Are you aware of some of their proposed policies ? At least they don’t intend cutting workers rights like the last lot did as well as benefits etc.
Maybe make a positive contribution sometime rather than sniping like Farage at the sidelines. And yes there is loads of criticism elsewhere, some of it entirely deserved, some premature, some just pointless but expected gloating.

But he wasn’t late this time. So no, not the same way. The only thing wrong with his declarations this time is that the right wing press has decided they don’t like them.

You are sniping here pretty well.

My point remains on a public forum you’ll see criticism, and given the feedback it reflects current opinion

If you want pro Labour only you need a closed FB site or similar

Crystalbits · 06/10/2024 17:22

Agree @BIossomtoes. So much stuff is misquoted and people won’t read it. Seems to go on all the time now.

cardibach · 06/10/2024 17:23

People don’t want pro Labour only @EasternStandard
They just want the anti bits to be based on policies which actually exist rather than wild speculation.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 06/10/2024 17:25

FFS - its been 3 months - most MPs are still setting up their offices! And they have inherited the biggest mess for decades. Enough already.

@EasternStandard again no one wants just pro labour stuff. Labour supporters can also be disappointed with the absolute fuck up they are making of their PR, totally unforced. I will however wait to see what their policies are before writing them off.

You on the other hand just moan and whinge about Labour whatever whilst the party that really rinsed the country can do no wrong. Yes ? How do you vote anyway ? Seem pretty Faragey with past comments.

I thought some of their policies were bad pre GE and it turns out some of them are. None of this is a surprise and public opinion is closer to where I was so fine by me.

I don’t think Starmer and Reeves will go but I do think it’ll get harder for them if growth doesn’t happen

I don’t follow Farage as others do, do you follow him online? If you know his lines then you’ll be closer to him than I am

I didn’t think ‘smash the gangs’ would work, and going by this weekend with fatalities and higher crossings it’s not.

FifiFalafel · 06/10/2024 17:41

How instant did you expect the results of smashing the gangs to be?

I thought it required setting up new bodies, employing hundreds of people etc and so measuring the outcome 12 weeks in is a bit previous.

I just think it is very funny that we have daily new threads by 'labour voters' already pissed off..
I agree there were a lot of threads about the previous government, but we had evidence a plenty after 14 years of the nonsense they were getting up to.

Give this government a chance.

‘Labour voters’ are complaining, getting impatient.Well l am going to state the blinking obvious, it’s the Tories and their voters who are saying this.
