Time for a new PM and Chancellor?

1000 replies

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/10/2024 09:13

I wrote this on another thread but feel it should have its own thread.

Although I voted Labour (the current Tory’s are too insane), I think it may be time to swap out Starmer and Reeves. If this is done early, there’s enough parliament time left to bed a new PM and Chancellor in.

They both lack ideas, seem confused, no vision etc. They had 14 years to think up workable plans. Coming in and throwing their hands up saying there’s no money so they can’t do anything is very poor. They want to continue austerity on the sly. They indulge in stupid culture wars like VAT to rob Peter to pay Paul (and Paul won’t see a penny anyway). They have bad advisors and are arrogant. It looks like they are just excited to have the job titles and don’t know what to do.

Get a top two who will come up with a bold plan. We’re in the gutter so there’s opportunities to deliver quick wins. They don’t always need funding, simple policy changes can make big and quick differences. If they gave each department a target to deliver one quick legislative win by Christmas, we’d start 2025 differently.

Unfortunately we’re stuck with two people who can’t believe their luck, and who are afraid of the Daily Mail, Murdoch, some loud Redwall types and bots on X who wish our country economic harm. They are weak.

If Labour were a football team, there would be fans screaming for Starmer to be sacked now.

This is not about getting rid of Labour. I believe there is talent in the wider party, much more than in the Conservatives who hollowed out their party under Johnson. Nevertheless I just don’t think Starmer and Reeves should have their roles.

Media - Rich bloody boomer pensioners
Labour - Cut winter fuel allowance
Media - Pensioners freezing, poor old dears.

Media - There's no money and Britain is falling into a pot hole
Labour - Tax the richest
Media - But that bloke from Pimlico Plumbing who doesn't like paying his way will leave.

Media - Doctors striking and people can't get treatment catastrophe
Labour - Settles doctors strike
Media - Not those doctors. Not that much.

Media - Train drivers striking and people can't get from A to B.
Labour - Settles driver strike
Media - Not those drivers. Not that much.

Members of the public are capable of critical thinking - that's where Labour's true challenge lies.

What optimism? What did they have to be optimistic about? They inherited a shit show. You're really not making sense. There have been some really helpful posts already about the good they've done so far. Maybe read those.

Or pretend the Tories would have performed magic by now.

So the new Labour government didn't feel optimistic about coming to power? If they didn't why should we? Why were we voting for them? How depressing.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 06/10/2024 15:48

I want them to acknowledge people have voted for them, so have put their trust in them. Don't take those votes for granted.
I agree with PP, their PR machine needs to get better at communicating the positives. The government needs to move on from gifts and donations.

Apologies for looking 'silly' but i remember the Blair Government having much more impact when he came to power. His Government had much more energy than this one. I want better.

His government had much more money too and public services that were slightly underfunded, not decimated. It didn’t have a week of racist riots to deal with in the first month or the Middle East going up in flames.

I’d say looking at feedback in polls and groups that’s a no.

And do you feel that message is coming across?

It is sufficiently for me given the amount of time they have been in power.
Like most people though, I remain open minded and will follow their progress closely.

Zonder · 06/10/2024 15:58

Oh dear, I think someone didn't get their personal thank you card. I expect it got lost in the post.

ruethewhirl · 06/10/2024 15:58

Good heavens, give them a chance! They don't have a magic wand and neither do any of their colleagues. 14 years of Tory government has done a lot of damage.

Yelloworangetomato · 06/10/2024 09:27

Who do you have in mind?

However, isn't it quite obvious that neither of these roles have any real power? It astonishes me that anyone continues to labour under the delusion that any form of democracy actually exists anymore

Who holds the real power ?

Depends on what polls and groups you look at. And I have no doubt your immediate response will be to accuse me of being in an echo chamber without considering your own position 😆

Personal popularity/satisfaction w policies are down but voting intention is unchanged - depends which polls you look at

If we had a GE tomorrow we'd more than likely still have a Labour government

Have the media made much of the nurses rejecting the 5.5% pay deal? I'm not sure what their line would be because they hate unions but would at the same time be reluctant to portray nurses as 'greedy'.

Teachers on the other hand voted overwhelmingly to accept 5.5%, and we're usually pitted against 'angel nurses' as 'greedy workshy moaners' by the right wing media.

Not sure if they've decided what their narrative is going to be yet.

Sue Gray has been nothing more than a seat warmer for Morgan McSweeney, who was too busy pre election running the campaign to do his ‘proper job’. Now he’s got the job he was promised for masterminding Starmer into No.10 from as far back as 2017.

Labour’s Dominic Cummings. Fucking whoop!

Goodness, Labour can't even get that right. They just can't catch a break can they. Looks like their comms team needs to step up as well as their PR.

Like him or not, McSweeney has been very successful so far. Hopefully he might sharpen up Labour's comms strategy.

So you know they're grateful for your vote now. Why not give them a year and see how you feel then when you can really weigh up how they're doing based on some concrete evidence?

HoppityBun · 06/10/2024 16:25

A new PM? Lordy we’ve only had this one since July: have the Tories ingrained in us impatience with any PM who lasts a bit longer than a lettuce?

I think we all need to calm down and get used to having the same person in place for a couple of years. We’ll have even less international credibility otherwise.

I am no fan of Starmer but I do not want the same merrygoround of ministers that we’ve had in the last few years

EasternStandard · 06/10/2024 16:25

Labour’s comms is fairly easy to spot in the headlines

They do give it a go. If they can’t get growth I doubt the new person will fare much better

Missamyp · 06/10/2024 16:27

Sue Grey undermined Boris's government and Boris himself via partygate.
Oh, the irony of now being the chief of staff overseeing a bunch of misfits.
John Read claimed the civil service was not fit for purpose, and Cummins also attacked the civil service.
Incompetent nincompoops is being kind.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 06/10/2024 16:29

I'm willing to give them 4 years if I see concrete progress. As long as I have confidence that the cabinet is made up of optimistic, competent and honest people with the sole intention of serving the electorate.
