I don’t get the obsession with Disney among grown adults. AIBU to think that being so into children’s movies and merchandise is immature?

I read this book recently. It's published by Disney. It's not for children.

Fun spunge 😛

whiteroseredrose · 01/10/2024 19:27

It's not my thing, but each to their own. I don't understand the attraction of computer games either.

One thing that was a shock was seeing a 60+ woman in tears meeting Mickey Mouse. Surely she knew it was a teenager in a costume?

I'm 43 years old and love playing with Lego lol some people think when you become an adult you have drop the things you love and I say why the fuck should anyone do that. I'm not into Disney but going through the My little pony and Care Bears stage with my daughter was just like being a kid again haha. Life is too short to be miserable so if a bit of Disney makes someone happy then good for them.

Ah we love Lego! (Two adults no kids here Grin) I find building very calming and a great way to relax. I make no apology for that. AFOLs unite Wink

Uricon2 · 01/10/2024 19:35

There are 7 billion people on the planet and we're going to be into different things, so no judgement of liking Disney.

Except... one colleague many years ago who was utterly obsessed with Disney/Snoopy started (trying to) have a dig and giggle when she found out I had been to the opera the weekend before. She was very, very firmly put in her place, because it cuts both ways.

StMarieforme · 01/10/2024 19:41

You do you.

I find the blind faith in religion odd. It's not for me. But I don't object or name call anyone else for it. Ditto football. F1. Getting pissed.

Stop being so judgemental.

Needmorelego · 01/10/2024 19:41

@AChickenPooAndABiscuit Hello fellow AFOL.
I have several of the Disney Princess Lego sets.
Some of them are even the Juniors 4+ sets. How awfully childish of me.
😂😂😂

I don't get the obsession to not like something but then go one step further and post about it to get some sort of validation on your thoughts, that sounds immature to me.

Personally as a lover of Disney and reading children's books like Harry Potter or young adult fiction (must be that English Lit degree I have forcing me to read all those deep thought provoking books) I like to live and let live.

I too have a Lit degree and now much prefer YA fiction
Lots of them are surprisingly good!

I'm also a Disney person though, so maybe thats why

AllAboutNiamh · 01/10/2024 19:43

I work with someone who went to Disneyland on his honeymoon. Just him and his wife! I can’t get my head around that as to me, it’s the 7th circle of hell.

Bubblemonkey · 01/10/2024 19:46

Rather be immature than a judgmental bint 🙃

phoenixrosehere · 01/10/2024 19:46

I think it’s immature and sad that people like yourself OP have an issue with people enjoying themselves simply because you deem something immature and don’t agree with it or “get it”. There is nothing for you to get and you don’t have to get it.

I think for many it is likely a mix of things, probably nostalgia, some were probably kids who were pushed to grow up too fast or had to and didn’t get to enjoy the movies as kids, or they simply love seeing a happy ending somewhere in a world that can be pretty bloody nasty. Whatever the case may be, they are well within their right to find joy in it and people calling them names and judging them for finding a little bit of light are the ones who are immature.

I will never understand the need for some to stick their nose up when they can just leave others to enjoy things when it is not causing them any harm and isn’t their business.

I don't get why you care what other people are into that doesn't affect you in the slightest.

People enjoy what they enjoy. Do you not have any hobbies or interests, OP? Since you spent time posting this completely nonsensical thread about nothing, I'd guess not.

Also, so many people categorise an interest or enjoyment of Disney as an "obsession." When all that is happening is people watching the movies or buying some Disney-themed PJs every now and then because they're cute.

Do you spend time ragging on the men who are obsessed with their favourite sports team and follow them up and down the country and buy every bit of available merchandise?

Didn't we have this exact thread as recently as a month ago?

Live and Let Live

Yup we did. Not sure what’s with the uptight hating.

I quite like the parks but wouldn’t bother without Dc. With Dc though, yeah, I enjoy it. What’s not to like about some immersive escapism?

Hello! 👋 The new Winter Village set is on my list to buy today Grin (it’s a long list…)

I like an adult who can still reach back to enjoy childhood joys.

I can’t say I’d go to Disneyland for myself - not because I don’t like it but there are probably options that suit me better for the money. But I’d happily watch a new Disney movie. Maybe wouldn’t wear the clothing… but that’s my uptight sartorial ethos more than anything. I did, however, wear the ears when I took Dc to the parks!

YOU sound immature @WildLemonLurker Hmm I bet you hate anything that is fun. Christmas, celebrating birthdays, Halloween parties, playing video games, paddling in the sea etc. I feel sorry for you. You sound as miserable af.

Screamingabdabz · 01/10/2024 20:07

I still can’t get over the sheer number of people worldwide that lose their shit over men kicking a ball up a field… at least Disney incorporates the higher ideals of creativity, culture, story telling, drama, music and art.

NittyLittleThing · 01/10/2024 20:08

I like some Disney films. Enjoyed Disney land Paris when I’ve been. (Once a 4 year old, and then 10 years ago when I was 21).

However, the ‘Disney adults’ who visit Disney (Paris or Florida) every year, wear the merchandise, have Disney ornaments and memorabilia in their homes - I find a bit too much.

Same with ‘Harry Potter adults’ who say “Oh I’m a Gryffindor” and have HP dressing gowns, scarves, bags etc.

Absolutely each to their own though. There’ll be things I do and wear that people will find weird.

Honestly if i could travel back in time to the first person who said this and make sure their Mam and Dad didnt meet, I would

Every time I see that, I wonder if people are parroting that, in an ironic fashion, or they really think they are being witty

I bet you’re fun at parties.

I love Disney but can never watch it because my 8 year old hates it and always has. It’s such a shame as there are some incredible Disney and Pixar films. The only time I could watch it is after bedtime and even though I love it, there’s something a bit odd about a grown woman watching Moana at 11pm 😂😂

This tickled me 😂
you have to wait until your kid goes to bed to watch kid friendly movies lol.
I am actually more into Disney as an adult than I was a kid thanks to my toddler and I’m not complaining 😄

camperjam · 01/10/2024 20:27

When I was younger I was a bit judgy like that but as I've got older and realised how shitty the world can be I just think if something harmless gives people joy then that's a good thing.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/10/2024 20:29

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 01/10/2024 17:36

Depends.

Enjoys watching Lion King, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast etc when with the kids / nursing a fuck-almighty hangover? Understandable and not unreasonable.

Wears the T-shirt, goes to Disneyland for ALL the holidays, has Disney bedding, finds Disney to be their ‘safe space’ (and is NT)? Bit strange.

Nailed it
