I don’t get the obsession with Disney among grown adults. AIBU to think that being so into children’s movies and merchandise is immature?

Aren't you a ray of sunshine.

If it makes people happy that has to be a good thing surely

stayathomer · 01/10/2024 17:00

Op book to go to Disneyland Paris. Now!! Never would have got it until I went!!!

CeruleanBelt · 01/10/2024 17:00

I know someone who has a shitty childhood and the only escape they had was watching Disney films. They still find it comforting as an adult. What's wrong with that?

MonsteraMama · 01/10/2024 17:00

Oh yay this thread again.

You know, I wrote out a well thought out response, I used proper punctuation and everything. But fuck it. I'm just going to leave this here instead.

Agreed.

Plenty of people will try to defend it and blithely ask "why do you care?" but you're right.

It's for children.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 01/10/2024 17:01

Oops you must have seen me in my daytime uniform of leggings and a Disney jumper from Primark, complete with red crocs with Harry Potter jibbits!

Blackbutler86 · 01/10/2024 17:01

Yep I’m very immature, when I’m on client calls or in team meetings I’m always belting out Disney songs 🙄

If people hate Disney so much, how do they go through life not knowing what Hakuna Matata means?

Alectoishome · 01/10/2024 17:03

I don't "get it" when it comes to Disney loving adults. But I don't feel superior to them or feel they are childlike for loving the films, songs etc. I would say I do really love the sword in stone and Robin Hood as I watched them a lot as a child so I feel very fond of them.
I do find it odd when adults have all the merchandise and go on holiday to Disney when they don't have young DC. But it's harmless so why sneer about it.

TuVuoiFaLamericano · 01/10/2024 17:10

I wouldn't class myself as immature. And I love a good Disney movie. Don't see anything wrong in people enjoying whatever makes them happy in this life so long as it's not hurting others.

Childfreecatlady · 01/10/2024 17:11

I'm with you, I don't get it. Also, you think it's bad here, it's so much worse in America. I see adult friends posting constantly that they are at Disneyland and how excited they are. Most don't have kids either. Really? I don't get it. I found Disneyland boring as a child, nvm as an adult. The whole thing is just weird AF. If I saw a grown man losing his shit over Disney anything, I would assume he was a paedo.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/10/2024 17:11

What about people like me, who still enjoy rereading books from my childhood, @WildLemonLurker? Am I immature too? I enjoy the nostalgia, and the comfort of reading old childhood favourites - it’s a good escape for me, and I assume adults who like Disney get the same from it.

I think Disney is lighthearted fun, and surely we all need a bit of that in our lives, especially at the moment. We aren’t all going to think the same things are fun, and that is fine - we all like different things - but you can’t be serious all the time, imo.

Can I ask the people who are agreeing that it is immature to like/enjoy Disney as an adult - what do you consider to be appropriate sources of enjoyment for us? Am I only allowed to like Question Time, the News, and documentaries about history?

PiggyPlumPie · 01/10/2024 17:11

I love Disney, inc parks, Harry Potter and Lego.

Am very immature.

stayathomer · 01/10/2024 17:14

Ah ok, if you’ve been and don’t get it, it’s just not for you

Pizzaplanet6 · 01/10/2024 17:15

Why does it matter so much to other people what others enjoy? If it’s not something that is harming others, then why the judgement? Why does adults enjoying Disney affect you so much to make a thread about it?

spamandeggs · 01/10/2024 17:15

I can't really judge . I have 80s/90s' troll dolls , Goosebumps books etc . I just love nostalgia , reminds me of the happiest time of my life (when my dad was my dad and my nan was still alive)

Doitalready · 01/10/2024 17:16

Tom and Jerry are classic!
I don't think it's weird to cackle at it every now and then!

Wellingtonspie · 01/10/2024 17:17

I don’t get it either. There is liking the movies then there is this whole obsessed cult like adults 40/50/60 plus buying Disney ears and tattoos and teddies and phone cases.

But not my money or skin.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 01/10/2024 17:17

In this world with horrible things going on, enjoying some Disney does not register as something that I would consider worrying. It’s not for me but it’s completely harmless.

eatyeateat · 01/10/2024 17:18

Who cares? Let people find joy where they can.

That's fine, but it isn't interesting. I mean, we all have thoughts and opinions, and we all have preferences. There are a lot of people in the world, some of them don't share my opinions and interests. That isn't interesting.

Lemonade2011 · 01/10/2024 17:20

Am off to Disney world on Monday…also a nurse (children’s) mum to 4 and maybe a bit immature, who knows the kids love it, it’s an escape really no one else has to like it or get it but if it makes me happy why do you care? yes I’ll be buying ears and a few for the staff on the ward to make the kids smile 😊

NahNotHavingIt · 01/10/2024 17:20

I mean Disney isn't particularly for me but I get that people like different things.

What I don't get is why anyone would think 'Hmm what can I do today? Oh I know, I'll spread a bit of misery on Mumsnet' 🙄

If Disney fans are happy, does the thought of that not make you happy OP?
