To think that adults who love Disney are immature?

I don’t get the obsession with Disney among grown adults. AIBU to think that being so into children’s movies and merchandise is immature?

I think it's weird, but then my hobby would be considered objectively much weirder so who am I to judge? Let people spend all their money on mouse ears if they want!

TeenLifeMum · 01/10/2024 18:56

Having been an adult for a number of years, I can confirm maturity sucks and being immature and silly is something that brings joy to people so why would you look down on that?

Soubriquet · 01/10/2024 18:57

People are allowed to like what they like!!

I like Disney. I also like horror, thriller and comedy’s.

But is it strange?

i don’t have Disney bedding, but I did get a t-shirt with mouse ears on prior to my last visit to wdw, and I have a Disney holiday every year, I’m NT. I do feel relieved that I have children to Justify my annual pilgrimage but I don’t think I’m strange, I just like escapism and nostalgia

you dont have to justify anything lots of adults go without kids

Why yuk someone else’s yum OP?

What a dreadful phrase!

What a pointless post.

we use it with small children who turn their noses up at other people’s food/ food preferences.

there seemed a striking parallel here

I’ve only ever heard it used in kink. As in for not kink shaming. No idea it was used on children.

Josette77 · 01/10/2024 19:01

AIBU to think adults who judge other adults for liking Disney are immature and narrow-minded?

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 01/10/2024 19:04

I've Dumbo bedding and love it. Life can be difficult sometimes a few pjs, bedding and wash bags is certainly hurting no one but brings me a little joy.

On is probably the wrong preposition, with might be more befitting. It’s common parlance with a lot of dietitians for what I would imagine are obvious reasons

Octoberdreaming · 01/10/2024 19:05

Yes YABU and you sound conceited and judgey. Of course it’s not ‘immature’ for people to like something that makes them happy. Disney films are for any age, they are not exclusively for children.

ThrowawayCommonSenze · 01/10/2024 19:10

It’s a massive multi-million dollar corporation who have a marketing arm working hard to sell it to adult and child alike. Mostly adults. It’s not little Timmy writing the cheque* for the holiday and merchandise

I don’t care what people are into. Grow up and stop trolling MN with a, frankly, tired old canard.

*metaphorically speaking

I find it strange. I find it infantile.

You find it strange that I find it strange. You find my judgement rude.

I wouldn’t ever say anything other than ‘that’s nice, enjoy’ if you were to tell me about your annual holiday.

ZenNudist · 01/10/2024 19:13

Better tell us what we ARE allowed to like then.

Maybe classical music jazz and prize winning literary novels. Very mature.

Well I think you're a judgy mcjudge pants. 🤣

Elphamouche · 01/10/2024 19:14

Married, mum, work 2 full time jobs, have a mortgage, doing really well for myself in my main career. Financially better off than my friends (when not on mat leave obviously). So thought I was doing pretty well!

But I like Disney movies and going to Walt Disney World. Shit. I’m immature. Even worse - I have a Disneyland Paris Spirit Jersey!! I’m fucked.

Are theme parks and holiday mementos really that strange though?

Getonwitit · 01/10/2024 19:17

I can enjoy certain Disney films but i don't get the grown adults wearing Disney character clothing, collecting toys and having Disney tattoo's. But i will admit to be being a Bluey fan but wouldn't buy myself Bluey pyjamas.

sparklyfox · 01/10/2024 19:18

Isn't it natural to feel wistful about something that was a huge part of your childhood? If you grew up in the golden era of Disney animations, those films will have had a big impact on you. Some of the older ones are really very beautiful and artistic.

Theme park holidays are to me. I can understand a day at, say, Alton Towers but 2 weeks doing nothing but rides, parades, meet and greets are strange to me.

I have no problem with people thinking my ‘lie on a sunlounger, go for a wander round a remote French village, eat lots of cheese, drink lots of wine, read books and go to bed at 11’ holidays boring or strange.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 01/10/2024 19:20

Not necessarily.

True maturity is not being grown up all the time. It is knowing when it is appropriate to be daft and when it is not.

When I was a young woman I thought I must show my maturity by being what I considered 'age appropriate'. So I performed my idea of grown up.

Then I actually matured and I realised it's important to have fun. And be silly. And yes, play. I am 50 years old and I have moments I am ridiculous and I laugh till I can't breathe.

True maturity means knowing what is ok when and understanding that you don't have to act a certain way so that other people approve of you.

wildthingsinthenight · 01/10/2024 19:21

Live and let live.
Let people have the silly little things that make them happy.
They aren't harming you??
Concentrate on your own life and stop being so judgemental.
It isn't a good look

Sethera · 01/10/2024 19:22

Disney is a ruthless, hard-nosed money-making machine that tries to present itself as pink and sparkly, and I'm surprised more adults don't reject it for that reason; but there's nothing inherently wrong with adults liking children's entertainment.

There’s a distinction between boring and strange though. One is basically not your scene or idea of a good time and the other one is abnormal.

i must say though as an adult I wouldn’t go for meet and greets as I’m well aware that’s just an adult in a costume, but maybe as a group photo as a memento but it’s not something I’d personally do in all seriousness

Cherrybombcocktail · 01/10/2024 19:23

I find kids' films boring but each to their own. I don't think it means that someone is immature, maybe just young at heart and that's not a bad thing.
