To think that adults who love Disney are immature?

I don’t get the obsession with Disney among grown adults. AIBU to think that being so into children’s movies and merchandise is immature?

I swear this exact thread was posted like a month ago. To answer your question does it effect you? Does it harm others? If the answer is no to both then mind your own business. Life is pretty shitty sometimes people need things that remind them of a simpler time

Nothing wrong with enjoying the films but decorating your bedroom in a lilo and stitch theme and your living room Minnie Mouse is weird if you’re an adult

FlibbertyGibbitt · 01/10/2024 17:23

Tell us what you like OP ? We all like different things and are allowed to .

Did you see that house on right move.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 01/10/2024 17:31

[Sorrowfully kicks off Minnie mouse shoes, hangs spotty dress in back of wardrobe, and wanders disconsolately out of the door]...

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 01/10/2024 17:36

Depends.

Enjoys watching Lion King, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast etc when with the kids / nursing a fuck-almighty hangover? Understandable and not unreasonable.

Wears the T-shirt, goes to Disneyland for ALL the holidays, has Disney bedding, finds Disney to be their ‘safe space’ (and is NT)? Bit strange.

Flumpi · 01/10/2024 17:38

There’s a thread bashing adults who like Disney I swear like once a month on here.

Who really gives a fuck if people like Disney, or Horror films or Anime or the Opera?

What do you gain apart from an undeserved feeling of “I’m better than them”?

It’s not classy to shame people for something harmless that they enjoy.

mushpush · 01/10/2024 17:44

Nah, I think it's more immature to be unable to understand people liking different things!

HeliotropePJs · 01/10/2024 17:45

We don't all like the same things, and many things that adults do are immature. I happen to believe that drinking to excess is immature, for example. Meanwhile, many of my interests in my 20s and 30s would have been considered 'old lady hobbies' by lots of people. So what?

Do what you like, as long as it's not hurting anyone else, and allow others to follow their own interests. What difference does it make to you?

FlippertyFlopperty · 01/10/2024 17:46

My exes ex adores Disney. She got very jealous when she heard we were planning to go to Disney World. Just because she's an absolute nightmare and is a horrible person, I do think anyone adult who loves Disney to the extent she does is a tiny bit pathetic. She loves Stitch in particular. RM, if you read this, yup it's you I'm talking about, you horrorbag!!!

Timble · 01/10/2024 17:47

I think it’s not really anyone else’s business to work out why people like what they like. Wouldn’t the world be bleak if we all liked the same things and all acted the same? I do like Disney, I have many happy memories from my own childhood and also from the excitement with my DD’s when they were younger. Life is too short, you should do what makes you happy without judging others.

broccolienthusiast · 01/10/2024 17:47

So what’s an adult appropriate hobby then? Posting your opinions on MN because in real life no one cares about what you have to say?

Dragonsandcats · 01/10/2024 17:47

I’d rather watch a disney film than a horror one! Am not particularly into it, but can see why an adult would go to disney world and universal. Presumably you feel the same about harry potter, marvel and theme parks (that people into those are immature)?

motherofbabydragon · 01/10/2024 17:52

it’s a bit of nostalgia and comfort movie. also the movies are genuinely enjoyable for the entire family. sometimes i don’t want to watch something bleak and prefer something that is cozy and makes me feel good and is easy to watch.

the parks we do enjoy the times we have been for the atmosphere and the rides. it is just a nice easy holiday for us where we can relax. some people like all inclusive resort or beach holidays, we happen to like disney.

ladymalfoy45 · 01/10/2024 17:53

Marvel is under the Disney 'banner' now.
But Moana is ledge. And I will fight you. With Maui's fish hook.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/10/2024 17:54

Would you still think that if they were perfectly mature in all other aspects of their life? In my opinion YABVU to judge someone as immature over one little quirk / interest / preference.

In any case, there's nothing especially immature about being nostalgic for things you read or watched as a child, or for enjoying some escapism into simple, innocent stories.

I can tell you what's not very grown up though - saying you 'don't get' things just because you personally don't like them. And belittling people who have different tastes from you.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/10/2024 17:56

Also, if you're secure in your maturity and self-esteem, you don't tend to be concerned about whether things make you look mature or not.

Chypre · 01/10/2024 17:57

Or, they might be unaware that they prefer Modernist cinematography while most of the current affairs are Post-Modern or Meta-Modern (Greta Gervig, A24 productions). Modernist by no means means “immature”, by the way.

mushpush · 01/10/2024 17:44

I agree* with this. Like what you like (so long as it's doing no-one any harm)

*exception being wrestling. No adult (16 plus) should be allowed into a wrestling event until accompanied with a child they are supervising! Shouldn't judge really, but there is something cringe inducing about seeing a grown man shout at a bloke in spandex partaking in a scripted event (will make an exception in the no adult policy for grannies as they helped make Big Daddy/Giant Haystack matches).

Moro93 · 01/10/2024 17:59

I love Disney and visit the parks, buy merchandise etc. It’s not ‘children’s merch’ when there’s a huge chunk of it literally targeted at adults. Which children are wearing adult clothing sizes?

I always find it incredibly strange and immature that grown adults can’t comprehend others enjoying something just because they don’t like it.
I always think people like that are very miserable and boring people and want to suck the joy out of things for others.

greengreyblue · 01/10/2024 18:00

OP I don’t get the adult love for Disney either. But I know lots of people do love it. I dislike horror too but lots of people love it.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 01/10/2024 18:02

I don't care for Disney, but I don't understand sneering at people who get enjoyment from something that doesn't harm anybody else.

Needmorelego · 01/10/2024 18:04

I prefer Hello Kitty myself.

Flumpi · 01/10/2024 18:04

I don’t get how going to see a broadway show is fine but watching a Disney movie isn’t? I love a musical and tbh a lot of Disney movies are like a version that’s accessible for the whole family

JazbayGrapes · 01/10/2024 18:04

I think some people take it too far. Films/merch are cool, but tattoos are a bit weird.
