To not want to meet up with this rude woman?

My oldest friend, Jane, recently moved back to her university city; partly for personal reasons, but also because she was offered a job there. She hadn’t been working for a while when she got this job, so is playing catch-up financially, but she decided to treat herself to a birthday night out last weekend. I travelled to join her.

Jane has quite a few friends in this city who I haven’t met before. She was excited for me to meet them, but singled out one in particular, Marian. She was saying she just knew we’d get on great, she’s so lovely etc.

Anyway, we go out for Jane’s birthday meal. After about ten minutes, Marian and her boyfriend haven’t arrived. We order wine, but say we’ll wait for them to order the food. Ten minutes turns into 20, then 25… still no sign, not even a “sorry, running late” text. The waiter has been back asking if we know when we’ll be ready to order, then to try to sell us more wine (which Jane very quickly said no to, which I’m 90% sure was down to budget). I suggest it’s time to ring Marian and check she’s definitely still coming. Jane does; Marian says the traffic is terrible, but they’ll be there any minute. 10 more minutes pass; everyone is hungry and in need of a drink. I say I’ll treat us to some Prosecco as it’s a special occasion (mainly to pacify the waiter, who’s clearly concerned about a table for eight having been there over half an hour without ordering).

Marian and her boyfriend finally arrive 45 minutes late. Not a word of apology; just babble about the traffic, you wouldn’t believe it… no attempt to even pick up a menu. Jane’s clearly waiting for a pause in the monologue that I sense isn’t coming, so I say “Sorry to interrupt, but I think we really need to order; they’ve been over a few times now”. Marian umms and ahhhs over every bloody menu item like she’s got all day, rather than being 45 minutes late and having pissed everyone off. She eventually orders.

But the rudeness didn’t stop there. The woman barely paused for breath throughout the entire meal. We had chapter and verse on her job, their flat, her hobbies… she didn’t ask anyone else a question or show any interest. I didn’t even hear her wish Jane a happy birthday. (If you’re wondering about the boyfriend, he barely said a word. I don’t know if he was just ignorant or has been stunned into silence by living with Robogob.)

Anyway, yesterday Jane rang me. She thanked me again for coming down - but then said, “Oh, I meant to say, Marian really liked you! She wants to know when you’re coming down again so we can all go out”. I’m baffled, frankly. I don’t know how she could either like or dislike me; she never stopped talking for long enough for me to speak to her, and she certainly wasn’t interested in getting to know me (or anyone else). I can’t understand why on earth she’d want us to meet up.

I’m hoping the idea will just fall by the wayside, but if Jane pushes it I’ve no idea what to say. She’s such a kind person and clearly sees something in this woman; I don’t fancy telling her that the “lovely” friend she was so keen for me to meet is, in fact, a total arsewipe. Do I just grin and bear it?

“Come on now” 🙄🙄🙄

Yes, exactly. Because you are acting as if the only two choices here are- see Marian every time you meet your friend and "grin and bear" it OR be utterly rude and insulting about her to Jane.

There is a middle ground here as many people have suggested. If you dont want to say anything at all to Jane then suck it up and enjoy Robogob. You cant have it both ways.

MelodyMalone · 01/10/2024 09:21

Maybe say to Jane - I found Marian quite hard work - she was late, talked all the time and honestly I found it all a bit rude. Is she always like that?

Then at least you'll have some idea if this is normal behaviour for M, or if this occasion was out of character.

I suspect it probably is her normal behaviour though and everyone else has just got used to it!

nootcoffee · 01/10/2024 10:27

so the group sat there
no wine (when the waiter over and offered, why did no one say… yes please!)
no starters

It’s like no one in the group had ever socialised before!

nootcoffee · 01/10/2024 10:29

Seems to me like no one at the group wanted (or indeed couldn’t!) to get stuck in to enjoying themselves until Marian rocked up. They’re obviously quite fond of her!

The13thFairy · 01/10/2024 10:49

Late? Then non-stop talking? It's cocaine.

What a stupid comment. Did you even read? Jane had already said no to the wine; I knew why, which is why I offered to treat us.

heavens!
you treated the table of 8 to one bottle of prosecco

that was kind of you

so everyone got a thimble and no one else jumped in to buy a bottle!

Good shout!

And no doubt why everyone was seeming to be on tenterhooks waiting for her.

Let me guess Op… there was a sudden flurry of people going to the toilets once Marian had arrived ? 😆

That is why no one aside from Op bought wine. All saving their pennies for Marian’s drop

nootcoffee · 01/10/2024 10:54

i reckon the coke comment nailed it

babbling
no appetite
self absorbed

There were six of us. Two people hadn’t arrived. Perhaps I didn’t make that clear - oh no, wait…

Do I think Jane will be opening a vein if she finds out I don’t like Marian? Of course not. But I do think she’s had a hard time with structure financially and then moving cities, even to somewhere she already knows well. Who knows - maybe Jane thinks that if I’m friends with Marian too, it will give me more reason to visit. Or maybe I’m overthinking it,
D'ya think? I think you are loving the drama. 'Oh help, how do I tell Jane that I don't like Marian without actually telling Jane that I don't like Marian?' Hmm
Most people would just say ' look Jane, she's not my cup of tea, and I'd rather just meet up just you and me.' But you won't do that because it'll be 'upsetting to her' or Jane needs a reason to invite you over more often.
SO - meet up en masse and suck it up, as you yourself suggested you do in your OP. Or don't. I wouldn't. Hmm You are certainly assertive enough on this thread, I don't understand why you need our help.Hmm

So yeah - come on now.

and out of the 6

you treated the table to one bottle of prosecco amongst 6, and after everyone had necked their thimble of fizz …. no one else did and so everyone sat there waiting for Marian to rock up with the good stuff 😆

hydriotaphia · 01/10/2024 14:59

I wouldn't start bitching about how rude she is (even if true) to your friend. I would try to avoid saying you don't like her. Just say you'd rather meet your friend one on one and if it comes down to it, just say something very bland like you didn't feel a connection with Marian.

Oopsadaisy92 · 01/10/2024 15:06

Like a few others have said is it possie that Marion was embarrassed by being late and projected her embarrassment into waffle and therefore didn't think to ask after anyone else.

If it is the first time meeting her, give her the benefit of doubt as your friend clearly likes her.

One bottle of prosecco between six as part of the refreshments for the evening is perfectly fine, and it’s not the OP’s fault or problem if everyone else there was a scabby cokehead.

of course its not the Op’s fault!

she did something nice and got a bottle between 6

No one else did. So one bottle between 6. Either everyone else was
broke and / or
very tight or
waiting for Marian to arrive with coke.

It sounds bleak!

Josette77 · 01/10/2024 19:15

So there were six of you and other conversations broke off? How then did Marion monopolize the whole conversation?

Based on so e responses you've given and how
" Take charge" you are I wonder if you tend to be controlling and Marion is a bit more free spirited which annoyed you?

How did Jane react to Marion talking? Is it possible you are a bit jealous of their friendship?

You mention Marion is younger than you both. How much younger?

freakyfriday23 · 01/10/2024 19:34

i'd be honest op and tell your friend sorry but you didn't like her. you don't have to like her. problem solved

fatphalange · 02/10/2024 11:44

Ridiculous behaviour to delay a whole meal and drinks because someone isn't there. If she rang to say she was running 10 mins late then fair enough but I can't believe a group of grown adults decided to sit twiddling their thumbs instead of going ahead with plans because of a no-show.
'Marian' was probably mortified at this and had probably assumed she would just order for herself once she joined everyone. Poor communication though.
However the amount of over investment is again, ridiculous. Make a plan and stick to it, eat when you're hungry, order a drink if wanted, and don't meet up with people you clearly aren't keen on. Stop being so passive in life.
