Um.. I wet the bloody bed

NC for this & MN will be able to see I'm not a perv or troll.

Last night, at the end of my shift, I clocked I needed a wee, put it off thinking I would wait till I got home. I'd not been since about 10am (usual when I'm working) & it was about 8pm. Then within a few minutes I became suddenly desperate & had to go do it outside in the dark (the toilet is a way off in a different building). It struck me as weird as I've not had that happen before.

Got home, needed a wee again & had a vague ache in my lower abdomen. Evacuated my bowels twice (solid & again hadn't been all day) but the sensation of needing to wee remained as did this ache. Sensation was now becoming kinda sore.

Had to get family to pause what we were watching so I could go again - again this is not normal.

By bedtime, I was starting to feel a bit panicky about it, had ANOTHER wee, tiny amounts now, & at the very end it hurt like hell - felt like it was further up the urethra, like a painful pulling. That stopped as soon as I stopped pushing the wee out.

One more of those before I got into bed & the ache remained.

Then this morning I had I the wee dream! For the first time in like 40 years, dreamt I was weeing & my brain woke me up & I realised I had!! Not loads, but got up & finished in the loo. Urine a normal colour.

Now I feel fine, slight sensation in the urethra but that's it.

I don't drink alcohol & didn't have all that much to drink during the day yesterday, some coke & a cup of tea when I got in.

Did have an ache in the left side upper abdomen all day but that's an ongoing thing that's likely gastritis & I do have confirmed gallstones. Recent blood tests all clear.

Help me out here, what the hell just happened? Is this a UTI? I've never actually had one really. Why so sudden? Why the fuck did I just wet the bed in my 40's!!

You have an awful employer !! 😂

She's a bitch, honestly. I'm going to complain to HR

As your own employer, you have to talk to yourself about things large employers rightly have policies for.

Your location does not sound ideal at all not only from a toilet provision perspective, but also a lone working perspective, as you say the other businesses are shut when you are open. It sounds very isolated.

I would look into other premises as a minimum, but this may be a wake-up call to review your working practices more generally.

I wouldn’t drink a pint every 20 mins
maybe 200ml of water an hour?

Sounds like a UTI, that would've been caused by holding on too long. Please don't hold on that long - drink well and go for a wee regularly!

This. Find the time to wee through the day. You risk doing yourself serious damage. I hope you feel better. Take care.

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2024 10:39

What's happening with your gallstones? I have just had my gallbladder out and for the last few months before I have had constant UTIs linked to gallstone attacks . I never used to have UTIs at all, despite not really drinking enough.

HellsBells67 · 29/09/2024 10:41

I second the D-Mannose, it works a treat. I cannot believe how little you drink or pee! Hydrated bodies perform better, get drinking.

DefinitelyNotMyName · 29/09/2024 10:41

@RoseAylingEllisFanClub

You're right, I am super isolated (I'm between villages too, not in one) & do feel vulnerable af in winter but it's kind of silly for me to cos this part of the country is one of the safest places to live, genuinely. In winter I tend to take my people-loving dog with me who would defend me with her life & barks to let me know ppl are there, no one could sneak up on me.

Other premesis aren't really an option for a couple of reasons though I have thought about it, maybe I should again.

Well! I'm on my 3rd referral cos the first two got lost in the system. I've not had an attack for a few weeks but it niggles me every few days. Also think it's triggering my gastritis cos I've constant left side pain too (amylase test was fine).

How long did you have to wait?

I got bumped to private by my GP so in the end not long but 10 years of undiagnosed symptoms , then about 4 months from scan. Would have been over a year through standard NHS referral.

It sounds really like me though - constant niggling gastritis and rib pain and bladder pain. Op only last week so can't say if everything has magically righted itself yet!

achipandachair · 29/09/2024 10:48

You can get a prescription for antibiotics for UTI from superdrug online and other online pharmacies. You should get them the quickest way for you today - either order online and you will get them by Tuesday (one day delivery from Monday); or OOO today; or GP on monday; or a real life pharmacist today. If either of the other options will get you the antib's before tuesday do that. Order them anyway in case someone else falls through and also then you have them in hand for next time.

Are you one of the roadside chip butties/bacon sandwich/ cup of tea type places?

I’m trying to work out what the business is that would get enough trade yet is an hour from any kind of area built up enough to have a pharmacy.

I'm am sort of but permanent & not that kind of food (would be far easier & more profitable to be one though!)

There are two closer pharmacies but both are closed today.

Goodness wasn't expecting so many replies so quick!

On the drink/frequency thing, it's only when I'm working which is 2/3 days a week otherwise I drink a fair amount & wee throughout the day at home. Sounds silly but it's not that easy to leave & go to the loo & after a certain time it's impossible (I'm self employed & work alone). I do tend to pop to the loo once during my workday but didn't yesterday - or Friday now that I think of it.

Sounds silly but wouldn't a uti sting during the actual process & the urine be an odd colour?

My daughter has a condition that makes her prone to UTIs (not had one yet thankfully). We've been told to look out for strange smelling urine but they've never mentioned anything about colour, except that if it's really bad there could be blood in the urine. Obviously it's best if wee is clear or very slightly yellow but dark urine is an indicator of dehydration rather than a UTI (my daughter has been hospitalised with dehydration as she refused to drink, her urine was very dark and very little then but tests for UTI came back negative).

Katielovesteatime · 29/09/2024 10:49

If you’re barely drinking water all day, not peeing at all for 10 hours (!!) and after those 10 hours deciding to hold your pee until you get home instead of just going… of COURSE you’re going to get problems! You need to drink more water and pee when you need to pee. I’d be so worried if I hadn’t peed between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. - but I drink so much water and black coffee all day that I don’t think that’s literally ever happened. Take care of yourself!

OK I need your tips for the bumping to private!! How on earth did you manage that? My GP(s) act like everything is out of their control!

Right I'm going now to the pharmacy! I'll check back here on my return for more gentle bollockings about my working practices ;)

UTI and you’ve possibly developed an irritable bladder from regularly not going from 10am to 8pm while working. That might be ‘normal’ for you but over time this highly concentrates the urine in the bladder and irritates the walls, leading to urgency issues.

Feelingleftoutagain · 29/09/2024 10:54

Might be an infection however, this can also happen with gallstones, although I've never wet the bed when I had gallstones (had gallbladder removed since) it can feel like how you have described, keep an eye out for dark coloured and strong smelling urine as you might have a stone stuck. Best get it checked out to be on safe side.

RoseAylingEllisFanClub · 29/09/2024 10:58

I understand these things aren’t always so easy out in the real world to make decisions on, especially in rural areas where you have to balance ease of local access with all the other criteria. It does sound as if you’ve already tried to review it, which is probably telling you as much as your body is telling you about the need to drink and wee!

It might be an idea to score your current premises against certain criteria to help with the decision-making and perhaps help you latch on to more alternatives. For example, fire safety. If a fire broke out and you’re isolated, how safe are you? How long would it be until help came? Accessibility - if a customer came, are the premises and facilities accessible? (Facilities don’t sound it, particularly in the dark!)

Good luck. I hope you get better soon too!

I literally sent a message to the surgery saying the wait time was outside NHS protocols and could they do anything to get the hospital to see me sooner. They replied straight away saying they would look at other providers and trusts. Luckily a private hospital about an hour away is a member of this new NHS scheme. It's worth a try. I'm a real NHS fan but my condition was becoming debilitating . Hopefully, I shortened someone else's wait.

I think you should get UTI sorted but then make sure you see GP too.

ThatMakesSense · 29/09/2024 11:10

Waterworks infection

Apolloneuro · 29/09/2024 11:13

You’ve almost certainly got a uti. Get to the chemist.

Mmhmmn · 29/09/2024 11:14

Sounds like a UTI. Really not good to go 10am to 8pm without urinating. You need hydration and to let it flow through bladder and out to stay healthy and avoid urinary and renal problems. Cranberry juice can be good for bladder health but you might need to see pharmacist. But be kinder to your tubes - they’re more important than not taking 5 minutes at work.

LissaGa · 29/09/2024 11:29

You need to get a portaloo that is well lit and well maintained for you to use whilst working. Going for long periods without passing urine is unhealthy. Not drinking enough is unhealthy. You're lucky to have only just starting experiencing symptoms..

Movinghouseatlast · 29/09/2024 11:29

DefinitelyNotMyName · 29/09/2024 08:58

I totally agree but just can't fathom how I've gone 4 years with this set-up & it's only just become an problem? Generally I do get out to have a single wee during the day (never the evening) but didn't this Friday/Saturday.

Perimenopause makes you much more susceptible to UTI's. It's all part of vaginal atrophy. Oh the joy...

AltitudeCheck · 29/09/2024 11:31

Pop a back in 5 mins sign up a couple of times a shift and nip for a wee. It's really not worth damaging your kidneys for! Concentrated urine is irritant to your bladder and urethra and can cause urgency and stinging. You may not need antibiotics, drink of water plenty to dilute and flush out and reasses in 24 hours (if you get shivering/ blood etc then you probably do need antibiotics)
