Um.. I wet the bloody bed

NC for this & MN will be able to see I'm not a perv or troll.

Last night, at the end of my shift, I clocked I needed a wee, put it off thinking I would wait till I got home. I'd not been since about 10am (usual when I'm working) & it was about 8pm. Then within a few minutes I became suddenly desperate & had to go do it outside in the dark (the toilet is a way off in a different building). It struck me as weird as I've not had that happen before.

Got home, needed a wee again & had a vague ache in my lower abdomen. Evacuated my bowels twice (solid & again hadn't been all day) but the sensation of needing to wee remained as did this ache. Sensation was now becoming kinda sore.

Had to get family to pause what we were watching so I could go again - again this is not normal.

By bedtime, I was starting to feel a bit panicky about it, had ANOTHER wee, tiny amounts now, & at the very end it hurt like hell - felt like it was further up the urethra, like a painful pulling. That stopped as soon as I stopped pushing the wee out.

One more of those before I got into bed & the ache remained.

Then this morning I had I the wee dream! For the first time in like 40 years, dreamt I was weeing & my brain woke me up & I realised I had!! Not loads, but got up & finished in the loo. Urine a normal colour.

Now I feel fine, slight sensation in the urethra but that's it.

I don't drink alcohol & didn't have all that much to drink during the day yesterday, some coke & a cup of tea when I got in.

Did have an ache in the left side upper abdomen all day but that's an ongoing thing that's likely gastritis & I do have confirmed gallstones. Recent blood tests all clear.

Help me out here, what the hell just happened? Is this a UTI? I've never actually had one really. Why so sudden? Why the fuck did I just wet the bed in my 40's!!

I'm pretty sure there are laws about providing proper toilet facilities for employees. You really should have a strong word with yourself. I'm also really curious about where you live / work that the closest toilet is a walk down a pitch black road and the nearest pharmacy is an hour away. Maybe a shewee behind a bush might work as a temporary solution

I was just going to ask this question, where on earth is this place!!

MassiveOvaryaction · 29/09/2024 09:51

As well as planning in fluids and loo breaks to your day, if you're in your 40s I'd consider starting topical oestrogen (ovestin, vagifem etc) as that can help things improve down there.

Speak to your employer - they cannot have you in a situation where you cannot wee all day - it is bad for your health and they are wrong to allow this. YOU must take steps to sort this out pdq.

Go to pharmacist for treatment this weekend - it is most likely to be UTI; but under the sort of conditions that you work there are kidney problems just waiting to develop.

She says she is self employed

Grmumpy · 29/09/2024 09:52

Probably been said already…pharmacists who have signed up for it can now prescribe for utis. I assume they would do the simple wee test and then prescribe if you had uti. If you leave it and it goes to your kidneys you will be in agony.

Bouledeneige · 29/09/2024 09:54

Pharmacists do not need to use a wee test to diagnose UTIs - they just need to ask you about your symptoms - this is in line with clinical guidelines. So very simple and easy. Mt DD went last week.

DefinitelyNotMyName · 29/09/2024 09:41

Unfortunately the setup means I couldn't do that, I don't have a 'round the back' & everything is in full view of either a main road or my customers. My emergency wee last night was in the pitch black after I'd closed & honestly I was so desperate so suddenly I don't know I would have cared if I'd been seen 😬

Where do your customers go to the toilet? Surely there should be some provision for them?

6pence · 29/09/2024 09:56

Now you’ve given yourself a thorough telling off and vowed to do better in future, you need to make haste to that chemist and get yourself sorted. Moron indeed.

MagentaRavioli · 29/09/2024 09:57

OP - just have in the back of your mind an awareness of the symptoms of Cauda Equina too. Fingers crossed it gets sorted by healthier hydration and more sensible loo breaks but if it carries on you should get medical advice.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/09/2024 09:57

Also wondering about customer toilet. Could you get a posh portaloo?

Josette77 · 29/09/2024 10:03

sunsetsandboardwalks · 29/09/2024 09:50

Your employer has a duty of care towards you and that includes giving you somewhere safe and clean to use the toilet at any point in your shift.

If that means they have to pay for a portaloo or similar then so be it.

She's her employer.

Destiny123 · 29/09/2024 10:06

Hehe I came onto give the standard UTI /drink more response

but the many people saying what job could possibly mean that, amused me as a dr .... v much our job. When I'm on my 13h oncall days I'll drink my cup of tea at 6am, often my next drink is 8pm when we finish shift. Not really practical to walk off mid anaesthetic and most commonly the next one has arrived before dropped the previous patient to recovery. They did a comical attempt for the Christmas edition of bmj a few yrs back comparing drop in kidney function for drs working on icu vs icu pts during a shift, and in nearly all cases ours was worse

Inspireme2 · 29/09/2024 10:07

Push for some decent lighting to get to the toilet.
Or a large brught torch.
Surely someone cabt hold the fort while you go for a quick pee.
I have Kidney damage from childhood its badly scarred, it is a unpleasant poking sensation you do nit want.
No job however important can wait while a human is more important to complete daily functions.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 29/09/2024 10:07

@Josette77 yes, I know that, but if she's being paid to work in the same place three days a week as a chef, they still will have other staff who need to use the toilet.

I very much doubt she's cooking, serving customers, taking orders and doing front of house all on her own - so where do the other staff go?

Karatema · 29/09/2024 10:08

Please don't be me. I've always been shocking at "not weeing" because I hated going when anyone else could hear!
As a result, I've suffered from UTIs all my life.
It's only now, in my twilight years, that I have stopped suffering because I no longer care what anyone thinks and I have bigger things to worry about! I also now know, a lack of fluids can damage your kidneys.

vickylou78 · 29/09/2024 10:09

Definitely sounds like a urinary tract infection or kidney infection. Get to the GP

Gah I'll get very close to outing myself to anyone who lives here or even visits here. Customers don't need one but they can use the one on-site, anyone can. It's a fairly unique setup but nothing is out of sorts except my hydration management.

Haha I am indeed doing all of those things! I don't work for anyone at all. And I wish someone else was paying me, I might end up with more money that way.

Moomum123 · 29/09/2024 08:33

Definitely sounds like a uti. Don’t forget chemists can prescribe antibiotics without a prescription from the doctor now.

This. Do not wait for a GP, by the time you get an appointment, it could travel to your kidneys. And for all those 'oh, no, don't take antibiotics, it will promote antibiotic resistance', tell them that apparently, dermatologists prescribe them, long-term, at a drop of a hat, for zits!

Mummyratbag · 29/09/2024 10:18

Geez, yes people should drink plenty of liquids, but can I please reiterate that you DO NOT drink a pint every 20 mins. People have died doing this! It's rare, but google "water intoxication".

I'm legitimately totally alone expect during the height of busy season when a son helps me, they can pop out whenever they want.

Everyone’s given lots of good advice already (and pointed out not to have a pint every 20 mins as that can bloody harm you)

Something my midwife told me that might help rather than having to wee in the bath.

Couple of drops of tea tree oil in a jug of warm water, pour it on you as you go for a wee, pat dry. Can really help with any discomfort. Less effort than a bath. Would imagine it would also help with a UTI.

If you’re going to drink more regularly op then yes to the pharmacy and the cranberry juice, but also see if you can get an hydration sachets or tablets too as if you’re drinking more regularly this will have lots of electrolytes etc so you’re not just flushing your system with water and flushing the good stuff with it

raffegiraffe · 29/09/2024 10:26

I'm going to go against the grain here and say not a UTI but probably urethral irritation due to concentrated urine which has burned inside your urethra. It happens as you get older the the tissue down there gets more sensitive.
Same treatment though, stay hydrated. Try vagisil cream if it stings, or any barrier cream will help, even Vaseline.
I get this all the time 😞

Mischance · 29/09/2024 10:26

You have an awful employer !! 😂

BiscuitlyBoyle · 29/09/2024 10:28

Are you one of the roadside chip butties/bacon sandwich/ cup of tea type places?

I’m trying to work out what the business is that would get enough trade yet is an hour from any kind of area built up enough to have a pharmacy.
