An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

I wish they’ll just let this administration get on with it. Looks like we are going to have exactly all the infighting the last government had with this one. Just let them get on already. What kind of miracle were you expecting from Labour.

SweetSakura · 28/09/2024 20:43

I dont dislike all the decisions made so far. He was a steady hand during the rioting (but that was always going to be his comfort zone) but I think we do need to see labour start to edge more to the left and push the wealthy classes to feel the discomfort they expect from others.

And I am really disappointed that they couldn't see how tone deaf accepting all those freebies was.

scalt · 28/09/2024 20:43

Remember the Tories did all kinds of underhand stuff, which was not reported by the Tory-owned media. Tory politicians pocketed lots of freebies too, especially Johnson. Lots of things in the press are not as they seem.

At the moment, the Tory press are laying into Starmer because he's not one of their mates. I don't trust any politician, and I never will in my life thanks to the combination of Blair and Johnson, but I'm still giving Starmer the benefit of the doubt.

Novaavon · 28/09/2024 20:44

@WrigglyDonCat I had no idea Liam Conlon had been given a ministerial position. A brand new MP with no experience? Absolutely shocking. He needs to focus on his constituents and learning to be a good constituency MP first.

The problem is Starmer et al built their whole campaign on "change/we are different" when they blatantly aren't. That's the hypocrisy, they put themselves on pedestals and have fallen way short.

Loss of winter fuel allowance for a start.

Agreed. People really need to remember that the press has an agenda. (And it isnt one that benefits the working classes (and by that I mean everyone who has to work to live) the disabled or the vulnerable)

twistyizzy · 28/09/2024 20:40

Labour lying and being complete hypocrites has nothing to do with the Tories or the state of the country. It is completely their own doing.

Uh huh. And everyone would still moan at him if he spent £14k of taxpayers' money on suits and dresses.

Daltonbear1 · 28/09/2024 20:46

Firstly, as Rosie Duffield always was sniping in the background. Anyway, before he won the election, she should have been f well thrown out of labour anyway, because the amount of s that she would say that was anti labour was ridiculous.
And I love the fact that these regular posters are saying this s, because it's obviously been hijacked by the right-wing press really crucifying Starmer, because did you know that this didn't make as big of deal that? While Boris Johnson was in power, he took 900000 pounds worth of gifts. And since his left power is had 1.6 million from so-called Tory donors, and at the end of the day Starmer, what got some clothes paid for him sunglasses and helped the fact that his child could get gcse results in a quieter environment. This is before the election, by the way, not after He declared that, and yet here we are. Regularly talking about lace. It's like beer gate once again. I'm sorry, but I am very cynical. I know what's going on here.
And the amount of people that are posting are obvious reform voters or tory voters are those that like rosie duffield, because of her feminism, so called stance, quite frankler, I see through this, and I think it's absolutely disgusting, how they're trying to manipulate democracy

Dibbydoos · 28/09/2024 20:46

The Tories had already identified pensioners and the disabled as on the firing line, so no matter who got in, they'd both be in the spotlight. RS had already said mental health illnesses would be scrutinised and people expected to go to work.

But I'm massively disappointed that the labour party is behaving more like tories than tories do. But remember who put us here. Fraud found by the audit committee under BJ and RS amounting to £26b.

Ref the £300 - they cut off at the wrong point imo - people who have never worked get it, people who have worked don't....! But most pensioners I know used it for Christmas presents anyways 🤷‍♀️ 🤬 Those who rent or still have a mortgage are at highest risk by not having it.

Getting people back in work is important, but it needs proper support. Some disabilities are so debilitating that people can't work, but how do you identify those who can work versus those who can't when it's a mental health illness?

I don't believe the labour government have been given long enough to sort out the economic mess the country is in. I do think they focusseed on the wrong stuff - for me

  • deals on Corp tax for big companies need to go. Why do bug companies pay smalled % on profit than SMEs?
  • properly tax the 1%. Their fair share is proportionate to their earnings. They are not the only workers who work hard, but that's what they'd like us all to think.
  • Sort out non-dom tax.
  • Close loop holes that allow tax free investment of personal wealth.

Don't forget, he lied about not having had an impact assessment carried out
There was one, they didn't like what it said, so they didn't publish it

not only that but this.

SweetSakura · 28/09/2024 20:47

In fairness that was the line the Tories tried to sell when they were elected in 2010 and their behaviour was on a whole different level to anything labour have done so far.

Yes, all of this.

And some pensioners are hugely wealthy and fair game.

No one needs "winter fuel allowance" if they are sitting in a sizeable house with multiple buy to let's and a holiday home in the sun

Ah we are back to the "criticise Labour and you must be Tory or Reform voters" shit that was so prevelant during the election. Some people are so hard baked into a political party that they can't deal with any debate without labelling the other person a raving right winger.

Why does he need gifts or tax payers to buy clothes, he’s a millionaire on a salary of 150k, he can buy his own suits

ChallahPlaiter · 28/09/2024 20:50

Cracks me up when people claim Labour has a problem with women. Nope, they just don’t indulge in voter-pleasing culture wars. Now the Tories really do have a woman problem. Their policies disproportionately harm women and always have. But hey, they’re opposed to trans rights and to the swivel-eyed that makes them raging feminists.

Yanbu I thought he was a con anyway with his toolmaker line and the rest

Starmer is a disgrace, but why anyone believed a politician trying to present himself as a good person is beyond me. I'd have been far more shocked if he had turned out to be a decent guy that I have been finding out that he's just another self serving, hypocritical arse. Just another in a long line and he song be the last.

I did like Rosies letter though.

And also yes, I work full time even though I am disabled and it takes a huge amount out of me. I do want the government to make sure my taxes aren't subsidising people who have made not working a lifestyle choice

You think a pensioner on 14K per year has a holiday home abroad?
You either believe in universal benefit or you don't. If you don't then we should means test everything: NHS, education etc.

Lacking charisma is one thing, but he is just plain unpleasant. Sneery, bad-tempered, and patronising. He's damm lucky he was up against the weakest Tory party in decades.

Yes, patronising is definitely one of the adjectives that has always come to my mind. Along with misogynistic and arrogant and champagne liberal

I work in HE and he reminds me an awful lot of many of the stale, pale and male academics there. middle-aged white men in other words

ThatbloodyRoblox · 28/09/2024 20:51

I don't think that resignation letter puts Rosie Duffield in the best of lights either. A lot of what she cites was pre election- yet she stood as a candidate thinking those things and knowing she was standing with KS as leader. why not stand as an independent? Or are principles only ok when you have the job. She might have won as an independent I don't know but it appears she wasn't convinced enough to go for it.
She also cites the WFA as far as I can see she abstained on the vote. Why? She was going to resign the whip anyway. It makes no sense.
Her constituents voted for a Labour MP they haven't got what they won for the next 5 years.
