An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

Am more surprised more didn't see him for the slimy, weak and clueless fool he's proving to be. I didn't think he'd do it so quickly but he's doing it spectacularly.

Same

AngelinaFibres · 28/09/2024 20:26

I hated the idea of a Labour government. I'm old enough to have been a working adult during the Blair/Brown years and it was awful. I thought this lot would be terrible but I am astonished at how quickly they have revealed how bad they are. There hasn't been any sort of 'honeymoon ' period. It's just awful.
Oh and ,if you're going to be gifted free glasses, at least get a pair that suit your bloody face

I don’t really care about most of the donations (we live in a system funded by donors). Tories were worse. However, it is worryingly politically stupid because they branded themselves as the contrast to them.

WFA doesn’t bother me - many people were receiving it on high incomes which is ridiculous in the current climate. Maybe they should have tapered, but then it gets complicated.

I’m giving them more time, at least until first budget and spending review, but I am a little concerned about the cancellation of constructive investments.

I agree with this - I’m for means testing the WFA in principle, I think we have to make some cuts like this if we want to put more towards public services etc.
It’s the execution of it (including the cut off point) that has been so bad. And, as with the donations, and “doom and gloom” narrative, makes you question their ability as politicians.
I’m disappointed but I also think there’s been a lot of hysterical noise re the WFA and hostility toward them which they don’t seem to be navigating well.

"Does she know something we don’t?"
Yes
There have been all sorts of rumours about something much bigger than the distasteful freebies in return for ... what?
Remember Lord Alli is one of the guys who bought a peerage by 'lending' money to Labour under Blair
So bigger than that

😑 shocker

If one of the two rumours going around on twitter are true, he is more like Boris than any of us could have imagined he would be!

I have seen two rumours, and it seems unlikely that both are true, given the nature of them. I'm not sure tweets along the lines of "well if what I've heard is true, it's big!" followed by a rhyming hashtag of some sort are the most reliable sources of political secrets.

Could be true of course, both are essentially impossible to disprove. But I think one of the rumours is mainly fuelled by the fact they can rhyme "Keir" with it. Far better to criticise him on things he's actually done, and policies actually implemented.

I've not been impressed, but as for people saying he's worse than Johnson - I'd still like an answer as to what exactly Charlotte Owens has on him that has put her in the HoL for life. Absolutely ridiculous political system that has her, and the likes of Michelle Mone, in the HoL.

@Weekendsonly

He doesn't seem to have much respect for women MPs. The way he treated Duffield was disgusting too. He has two very respected MPs in Abbott and Duffield, they are both very popular in their constituencies.

Edited

They’ve always had a woman problem. A significant part of the problem. Us being 51% of the population and all.

I was going to vote for Starmer until I saw him and Rishi Sunak in both Leaders' Debates . I'm not a fan of Rishi but he came across far better than Keir .

He just didn't come across well , no commanding presence , definitely not as someone who could lead the country , he lacked something .

I voted LibDem in the end .

Most pensioners will still get winter fuel payments- that’s why pension credit claims have increased.
He’s clearing up the problems made by Bozo.

I don’t care about his freebies, as long I don’t have to pay for them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

"Nearly 1.4 million pensioners in Britain receive Pension Credit,"
"According to the Census 2021 results, there were over 11 million pensioners in the UK"
So bollocks will 'most' keep winter fuel payments
Even if every person eligible claimed pension credit, that's only 3.1 million

Ablondiebutagoody · 28/09/2024 20:32

Wait until he lets Ed Milliband loose 🤪

BIossomtoes · 28/09/2024 20:32

he came across far better than Keir .

If your favoured style of debate is shouting your opponent down I suppose he did.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/09/2024 20:33

Us NHS staff aren't allowed to accept any freebies so why is he?
I'm certainly not against the 2 child cap though, can't afford kids then don't bloody keep dropping them out. I had one it was all I could afford. I'd have liked 4 couldn't afford 4 so tough luck.
Why does anyone need more than two?
As for heating why not just raise the bar. People who are well off should not be getting it. But they've made the bar too low.

ChallahPlaiter · 28/09/2024 20:34

From CCHQ to MN, no passing Go.

Obviously what’s happened is disappointing, let’s hope it leads to a real push to clean up politics. Funny though, a lot of what you see and read in the media and on here sounds like Labour is still the opposition and being attacked by Tory press and supporters.

Wow look Labour hasn’t fixed everything in 3 months, bring back “Boris”! It’s entirely transparent.

Fwiw I stopped voting Labour after 97 and I’m not convinced I’ll support them in 2029. I’m no tribalist but we had to get rid of the Tories, there was no realistic alternative.

Their Comms is awful, plays right into the hands of the "they are all the same" school of thought. The WFA which did need addressing has been done in a brutal sudden way without reference to the impact assessment which predicts some pensioner deaths as a direct consequence. Heaven help them if we have a bad winter and there are fatalities which can directly be connected with the loss of this payment to all but the poorest. Then there is the cruel two child UC cap, again this is hanging on to the cruelest aspects of Osbourne's austerity measures. As for the gifts and freebies, well they are legal and have been declared but the way it looks is terrible, I was sick of the greed and corruption of the last lot and did hope we could have a year of reasonable behaviour and integrity before life in the Westminster bubble got the better of them, but no, we are what less than 3 months in? and it is all a mess

Don't forget, he lied about not having had an impact assessment carried out
There was one, they didn't like what it said, so they didn't publish it

Ability and decent policy probably

HollyKnight · 28/09/2024 20:36

There was hardly going to be a "honeymoon period" after inheriting a massive pile of steaming shit from the last government. The country is a mess. There aren't going to be any quick fixes.

Novaavon · 28/09/2024 20:37

I'm not a usual Labour voter but I embraced the change I thought this government would bring. I'm so so disappointed with what they've done and how they are behaving. I'm so disappointed in Starmer. I thought he, with Yvette Cooper at his side, were a safe pair of hands. And even Rachel Reeves. I have no time for Rayner or Lammy.

I'm just so disheartened by it all. And I recently found out my new MP is the son of Sue Gray. And accepted a (party) donation of 10k from Lord Alli in August. It's just awful.

His behaviour wasn't inherited from the last government. He's managing to be an idiot all by himself

CranfordScones · 28/09/2024 20:39

There's not enough money for all the things people want, and there are precious few things left to tax harder. That's the reality for any party.

As someone with a right wing bias, Starmer is garnering some grudging respect for the reality check he's giving. And he's hardly against women when you look at the number of female ministers in the cabinet.

Labour lying and being complete hypocrites has nothing to do with the Tories or the state of the country. It is completely their own doing.

MrsWhattery · 28/09/2024 20:40

Wow go Rosie! Brilliantly written verbal ass-kicking. I really hope things go well for her now.

I've always wanted to like KS, I somehow feel he ought to be this solid, decent, personable chap. Not sure why! Because that's what I want Labour to be I suppose, and he kind of looks the part. But there seems to be a weird void where his understanding of optics, and maybe even politics, should be. It's like the more closely you look at him the more you see a strange blankness.

However I'm still surprised at all this apparent corruption and wallowing in gifted wealth while letting pensioners freeze. Yes the WFA is daft and went to lots of rich people and needed change, but they could at least have thought that change through, consulted, and waited until spring and then found a fair way to do it. And if you're going to do the whole "tough decisions" and austerity thing - which btw Keir, is economically stupid as last time round has shown - then SURELY you'd make sure you and your top team were personally not being seen to be living it up on luxury gifts. Where is their Malcolm Tucker because they really really need one.

And just think, Liam Conlon is such a talented prospect he immediately made it into a junior ministerial position. He managed to stand out in the huge crowd of new MPs. Really talented chap - must be.... Or possibly his mum is someone important ???
