An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

Well that's just the problem isn't it. Both parties are arses.

No, they are incomparable. Completely incomparable. A relative handful of donations, which every PM has accepted since the beginning of time will not make a blind difference to anything actually affecting the country right now.

I will categorically never, ever forgive what the Tories did during Covid. It was the lowest any government has ever sunk in all of history.

pleasehelpwi3 · 28/09/2024 23:02

Seems like MN has turned into the Daily Mail comments section for the day.
Clearly the £22bn black hole left and covered up by the Tories has meant tough decisions, and WFA is one of them. My wealthy parents didn't need it- last year they put it towards business class flights to South America. They don't need it- many pensioners like them don't- but blaming Labour for the Tories' economic fuck up isn't reasonable.
Agreed the clothes thing isn't a good look, but it's nothing like the industrial scale corruption and theft of taxpayers' funds that took place under the last government regarding Covid contracts, and the illegality of Partygate.
As for incompetency, Labour have dealt effectively with far-right rioting and sorted out industrial disputes that they inherited from the Tories. Quite a solid start, given that this country is in a dire state economically. Remember Liz Truss anyone?

Don't hold your breath. This lot haven't been in for 5 minutes and they are already looking dishonest and immoral.

I will gladly hold my breath and I couldn’t be more positive that we will never see the depravity of Tory behaviour.

Duffield and Starmer have been at loggerheads forever. It’s completely unremarkable.

tinydynamine · 28/09/2024 23:02

I think he'll be hone before parliament returns .

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 28/09/2024 23:02

Agree Didimum, I think the reason there's been so much criticism is because the Tories are expected to line their own pockets and their policies are expected to hurt the most vulnerable. We hold Labour to a higher standard because we don't expect it from them.

Starmer is on his way to making Johnson look good!
Edited
I prefer Johnson - he didn’t ever hide who he was.*

Buckingham Palace have had to refute his assertion that he was asked to have a man to man talk with Prince Harry about stepping back from being a working Royal.
Jonhson is an out and out lying bastard.

tinydynamine · 28/09/2024 23:03

I mean "gone"...sausage fingers.

StarieNight · 28/09/2024 23:03

Re fuel allowance it was cut too low, the threshold is far too low.

There are clips of starmer tearing into tories for even thinking about it.

"we will tread lightly on your lives".

Austerity mark 2?

Let's see what this pain budget brings.

sad. this thing about pensioner's heating. just awful and so inhumane.

Yes, isn't awful and inhumane the extent to which the Tories absolutely fucked up the economy and lied about it, knowing they were going to lose the election and force the next government into taking the tough decisions they didn't have the guts to. Sunak could have called the election in 2025, interesting he called it early- I wonder what decisions he was trying to avoid.....(think WFA and early prison releases).

Yes a really solid start - complete mystery why Starmer’s popularity rating has slumped to the lowest a PM has ever achieved!

The winter fuel allowance always should have been means-tested. It’s astonishingly unfair that it wasn’t. Entirely the right decision and that had to start somewhere.

My in laws also used their’d to upgrade flights. While my mother, living alone on state pension, but who also will no longer qualify, who hasn’t been abroad for 15yrs, couldn’t be more in favour of the change. And she’s a swing voter!

tinydynamine · 28/09/2024 23:10

Some people on the Internet, including ones I consider to be serious, are wondering if Starmer is having mental health problems, or if he is gay.

I am not sure he is incompetent, but I am genuinely surprised at the freebies scandal as it rather brings into question his constant drum banging about integrity. I expected a lot more.

Exactly this

The same polls also still put the blame for the state of the nation on the Conservatives. The country is just hella grumpy – with everyone and everything and no one has any tolerance. It’s all rather meaningless.

Why ignore the reasoning from Age UK?

Most pensioners will still get winter fuel payments- that’s why pension credit claims have increased.
He’s clearing up the problems made by Bozo.

I don’t care about his freebies, as long I don’t have to pay for them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do not believe this to be true. Most pensioners, the workers that Labour pretend to support, do not qualify.
Why do you say this?

Haroldwilson · 28/09/2024 23:17

I think he's great. A lot of newspaper editors have an axe to grind.

I am not. I was having a nice evening watching TV.
I would rather all pensioners who need it get it. But there are very many who don't need it in the slightest. I would rather they didn't get it so that those who need it get more.

I support lots of young families through a charity, who also struggle to heat their homes. Or even to live in homes that aren't damp. The money we have should go to those in need only

He’s barely been in power and money doesn’t magic itself up… you can’t compare to 14y of Tory austerity and say it’s all the same. Change is not quick, and Labour inherited a right mess, the Tories left us high and dry.

@OrangeSlices998 agree. Awful lot of wild chat on here.

‘Worse than Johnson’? Pull the other one!
