An excoriating letter from Rosie Duffield who resigned today..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rosie-duffield-resignation-letter-starmer-labour-b2620603.html#comments-area

Been bad enough for her to resign, I wonder what will happen next. Does she know something we don’t?

Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter in full

Rosie Duffield has quit as a Labour MP, attacking Sir Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary policies” and the freebie row engulfing the party.

That's the point though. I'd far rather they have double the money and the wealthy ones don't get it.

And there are plenty of people shivering and cold or struggling under pension age too

They may be shivering and struggling under pension age, which is bad enough, but they’re not frail enough to be dying of the cold because they’re too frightened to put the heating on for an hour. Rachel Reeves claimed nearly £5000 in the five years in opposition, for heating her constituency flat. That’s £700 a year more than the WFP for most pensioners. She’s reportedly anxious about opening her utility bills. On £150,000 a year as a cabinet minister and married to the head of the DWP. Imagine how the poorest pensioners she’s just robbed in plain sight must feel when their utility bills land on the doormat.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 28/09/2024 21:40

The fact she's resigned makes me really worry about what the budget will hold

2k2j · 28/09/2024 21:41

Before the election, I wondered (and put on Mumsnet) regarding their proposed non dom policy:

why would non doms wait around and pay vast sums of money in tax - why wouldn't they just hot foot it off to Monaco or wherever?

And now, we have the treasury reconsidering the non dom tax plans because the non doms will leave the UK. NO FUCKING SHIT! Who'd a thunk it?

Treasury reconsidering Labour's plan for non-dom tax status - BBC News

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves seen on stage during the Labour Party Conference 2024

Treasury reconsidering Labour's plan for non-dom tax status

The change follows concerns over how much money will be raised, should wealthy foreigners leave the UK.

Ridiculous at least read up before making comments like this

Look at Age UK response and the effects of cold on the elderly, including falls and worsened conditions

I have a condition that means the cold makes me ill. I don't need to read up on it

Money should go to those who need it. more should go to pensioners who need it none should go to those sitting on vast stacks of vash.

MichaelandKirk · 28/09/2024 21:46

What was Ali wanting in return? Or anyone who gives out freebies? They are doing it to get the ear of the PM. Why doesn’t Starmer see what he has done. Beth Rigby pushed and pushed him on this and he clearly didn’t seem to get it and was highly defensive over it.

On shore wind in this country is a laughable scam. Politicians' cronies get huge subsidies to build them and they don't produce enough useful electricity over their lifetime to pay off the carbon debt of the concrete and mined metals they're built from.

LlynTegid · 28/09/2024 21:47

Rosie Duffield would have resigned at some point, so not a surprise.

Remember only 35% of people voted Labour, it was an election that the Tories lost more than Labour won.

Autumn1990 · 28/09/2024 21:47

It’s not great for labour atm and they should have aimed to lift things for everyone, in the spirit of the 1997 labour win, but I don’t think the tortes could organise a piss up in a brewery right now.
I didn’t vote labour this time as I really wasn’t sure about starmer so I voted Lib Dem. They are the other option. I know people still hold the student tuition fees against them but that was nearly 15 years ago and it’s not the same people anymore. We, collectively, have forgiven other politicians much more.

Uh huh. And everyone would still moan at him if he spent £14k of taxpayers' money on suits and dresses.

He can spend his own money.

He has a special act of parliament to make sure his pension is super.

Here you go from Age UK

We strongly oppose the cut to the Winter Fuel Payment that means only those receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will receive it. This will leave millions of struggling pensioners without money they rely on.

2.5 million pensioners who badly need the money to stay warm this winter will not receive it and will be in serious trouble as a result.

Cutting the Winter Fuel Payment, with very little notice and no compensatory measures to protect poor and vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy choice, and one that will potentially jeopardise the health, as well as the finances, of millions of older people this winter. This is the last thing both they and the NHS need.

Well you should be thrilled because nothing is going to those sitting on vast stacks of cash (whoever they are). Problem is nothing is going to those who are 50p above the threshold for pension credit either. I’m all for means testing WFP out of the hands of wealthy pensioners. Aligning it with pension credit was absolutely not the way to do that - it’s a benefit supporting the very poorest pensioners and those slightly above the threshold are going to suffer. It’s lazy policy and demonstrates a lack of critical thinking on Reeves’ part.

Labour are expected to be perfect (they clearly won't be) but I think that now it's a right wing press feeding frenzy.- there was nowhere near this level of scrutiny in the past 14 years of Tory government. This is a campaign to destabilise Labour and ensure that it's a one term parliament and to lead the way for a reform gov.

Fizzadora · 28/09/2024 21:58

Daltonbear1 · 28/09/2024 20:46

Firstly, as Rosie Duffield always was sniping in the background. Anyway, before he won the election, she should have been f well thrown out of labour anyway, because the amount of s that she would say that was anti labour was ridiculous.
And I love the fact that these regular posters are saying this s, because it's obviously been hijacked by the right-wing press really crucifying Starmer, because did you know that this didn't make as big of deal that? While Boris Johnson was in power, he took 900000 pounds worth of gifts. And since his left power is had 1.6 million from so-called Tory donors, and at the end of the day Starmer, what got some clothes paid for him sunglasses and helped the fact that his child could get gcse results in a quieter environment. This is before the election, by the way, not after He declared that, and yet here we are. Regularly talking about lace. It's like beer gate once again. I'm sorry, but I am very cynical. I know what's going on here.
And the amount of people that are posting are obvious reform voters or tory voters are those that like rosie duffield, because of her feminism, so called stance, quite frankler, I see through this, and I think it's absolutely disgusting, how they're trying to manipulate democracy

That you Ange?

Houseplanter · 28/09/2024 21:58

I agree with @Rosscameasdoody

As much as I am disgusted (but unsurprised) by the shower of shit we have with starmer et al, I do agree that the WFA should be means tested. But the cut off has been levied at a level that is wrong, and it demonstrates the naivety/stupidity/ignorance of the Labour amateurs

You weren't troubled by the release of 10,000 criminals then? Many went on to terrorise their previous partners and a quarter back in prison. Not to mention all those that should never have been let out but were by mistake?

Your list is tosh.

I was expecting far better from this government but that Starmer fellow has proven himself to be a massive hypocrite, he was calling out the Tories for having their snouts in the trough but he's doing far worse. Such a hypocrite; not sure why you see fit to defend such hypocrisy.

Not sure if you noticed party gate which the right wing press loved and took out an 80 seat majority PM

Labour and everyone who benefited were up for that, so they can't complain now it's turned on them
