To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

When my DD was 2/3 she absolutely loved Thomas the Tank Engine. She's 4 now and in to princess but also bugs and Pokémon. Your friend is being ridiculous x

Cynic17 · 28/09/2024 10:13

Of course she can have dinosaurs! Your friend is just sexist, and very limited in her thinking.

Toys are just toys to kids, I’ve seen plenty of boys pushing little pushchairs with dolls in and girls with plastic tool workshops and toy cars. How on earth could an animal (reptile/bird/whatever dinosaurs are) be gendered?

HotSource · 28/09/2024 10:14

The worry is that children hear this shit spouted by adults.

As it happens, I grew up in the 50s and in many ways, things were less gendered. There wasn’t the money for new and separate toys for girls and boys. We all played with bricks, zoo animals, farm animals, cars, Lego.

My brother wore my hand me downs, and we all wore striped t shirts and plain coloured shorts. Not pink.

Obviously there were very serious legal barriers to equal opportunities but children were children and girls not expected to take part in ‘girly days’ etc. There wasn’t a huge ‘girly’ marketing machine, because there wasn’t the money.

Think your friend needs to update her views from the 1950’s!! My daughter loves anything to do with the fire service and fire engines, but also loves pink and glitter. Absolutely doesn’t matter what they are into, they like what they like!! Buy the dinos I say!

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 28/09/2024 10:15

Absolutely fine to get her dinosaurs! My nearly three year old dgs is getting a pram and a dolly to play with at my house when I look after him because he loves playing with his food trolley as a pram. Such an outdated opinion

Reugny · 28/09/2024 10:15

Make her an ex friend before she damages your DDs mental health with her sexist BS.

Btw my DD likes super heroes more than dinosaurs. (And bikes. ) A neighbours' DD loves dinosaurs and can tell you loads about them.

flyinghen · 28/09/2024 10:15

You're friend is a bit odd, and outdated

Dress DD in this the next time you see your friend!

I love this! 🥰

What’s odd is your friend with these outdated gender stereotypes

mitogoshigg · 28/09/2024 10:16

Why are dinosaurs for boys? I personally know two palaeontologists and both are female!

Buy the dinosaurs, bin the friend.

Deadbeatex · 28/09/2024 10:19

You are unreasonable if you buy them rather than coming round to mine and going home with several hundred of the bloody things 😂 both my DC are into dinosaurs and are a DS and a DD, I personally hate the whole girls toys/boys toys crap, if a child enjoys playing with something then they enjoy it and that's the only thing that should influence you in your purchasing (or helping to clear my house a bit!)

Dwrcegin · 28/09/2024 10:19

Twenty plus years ago, I bought my son a shopping trolley and a huge toy kitchen. He loved it.

Buy your DD the Dinosaurs. Your friend is ridiculous.

uncutdiamonds · 28/09/2024 10:22

My DS6 really loves wearing his pink dino crocs. Gets lots of compliments from boys and girls

Doris86 · 28/09/2024 10:23

Seriously, the questions some people feel the need to ask on here.

Is it ok to buy my daughter the toys she has asked for at Christmas?!

BrokenSushiLook · 28/09/2024 10:23

Anyone making comments about a little girl being "odd" or "boyish" for liking dinosaurs is a sexist arsehole who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near children without being thoroughly reeducated in how not to be a sexist arsehole.

Get your DD as many dinosaurs as will fut in her room

Eze · 28/09/2024 10:23

Your friend is odd, ignore her.

Get some of the Harry & his bucket full of dinosaurs books to read to her too, she’ll love them.

loudbatperson · 28/09/2024 10:24

Wtf? She likes dinosaurs, get her some dinosaurs. I loved dinosaurs as a child, still do in fact. In a bit of an armchair palaeontologist.

Faldodiddledee · 28/09/2024 10:24

This is so odd! We had dinosaurs as children, and they played along with interchangeable Action Man and Sindy. We also had plastic farm animals- surely they aren't gendered?

theexceliconisgreen · 28/09/2024 10:24

I'm a woman in my 30s and have a dinosaur blouse from Sainsburys I wear to work...so absolutely fine in your case!
