To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

One of my favourite toys when I was little was my garage and cars, and I was into astronomy too. Down with sexist stereotypes!

Lostinbrum · 28/09/2024 10:25

Your friend is a moron. I woukdnt progress this new friendship any further. I loved dinosaurs as a child, I wish I'd pursued paleontology as a career. I bought my daughters dinosaur toys and books when they were little because I wanted them to like dinosaurs too.

Seriously, the questions some people feel the need to ask on here.

Is it ok to buy my daughter the toys she has asked for at Christmas?!

Except that's not quite what I asked, is it🙄

I asked if anything about it was "odd" because that comment threw me. I'm still buying them regardless; my question was about the oddness or otherwise of it.

Your friend is the bloody dinosaur! I got animatronic dinosaurs and books about them for my birthday one year back in the 80s! Loved them.

@Ponoka7 yes STEM stuff "for girls" has to be crystals and shit doesn't it. My MIL still struggles with girls having non-pink related interests. My dd (the future paleontologist) over asked for science sets for her birthday once so MIL bought her a candle making kit and said "it's like science but for girls"

That's crazy grandmother behaviour! I'm a grandma to 3 and would never do anything like this! Hope your DH had a word!

How depressingly sexist your friend is, @dinosaurgirll
Of course your daughter can have as many Dinosaurs or toy trains or diggers or anything else she wants!

My son had a Barbie as a kid of 5

Skate76 · 28/09/2024 10:26

Of course it's fine, ignore your friend x

55larry · 28/09/2024 10:26

My seven year old Dgs is very much in to dinosaurs and my six month old Dgd loves chewing them at the moment. Dgs talks dinosaurs to her non stop which means that I don’t have to listen to all his dinosaur talk all the time.

oakleaffy · 28/09/2024 10:27

PS...Your friend is the dinosaur, @dinosaurgirll !

SilverDoe · 28/09/2024 10:27

I will likely buy my four year old boy a Polly Pocket set for Christmas because he really likes the style of the play sets; he got the bit Ice Cream one when he was 2 and still plays with it, guess I will have to tell him it’s for girls only, I mean be will be nearly five, it’s time he learned…

ilovesushi · 28/09/2024 10:27

Wow, does your friend's daughter only wear pink and bows and play with baby dolls? Your friend is weird not you, but you are also being a bit weird for buying into her gender roles crap.

Thank you! She will absolutely love this 😁

This person is not your friend btw and I would keep anyone with such outdated, misogynistic stereotypical views away from your daughter.

My 3yo DD loves dinosaurs. She has loads of them, can name them all and tell you all about them

Your friend has very out-dated views. Of course it's OK to buy dinosaurs for your daughter.

Please don't fall for any of this out dated crap .Buy what they are interested in , what interest or skill you want to stimulate .
26 yrs ago I bought my son a doll cos he wanted it .Family members did think it was odd we didn't it's a toy .Thought these ideas would have been well gone by now

Please don't tell him it's for girls only. If he gets a lot of pleasure from it, let him be.

Chester23 · 28/09/2024 10:28

Buy the dinosaurs. Ignore your friend. I've always had a love/fascination for sharks. I used to beat the boys to toys/books at school.

Oh gosh don’t worry I was being completely sarcastic there is no way he will be deprived of one of bis favourite toys and prevented from getting new ones!!

I am likely going to get him one of the camping themed ones, like the owl or bear 🥰

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/09/2024 10:30

Your friend sounds like the dinosaur ffs.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 28/09/2024 10:32

My daughter likes dinosaur. When she says that class mates have said they are for boys, I tell them they are silly because there were female dinosaurs as well, who do they think laid eggs? We've also found a book about famous women, one of whom was one of the palaeontologists.

So your friend is batshit.

Also see teach rex and other dinosaur related shows, and an usborne lift the flap Dino book if you're looking for activities/ presents

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 28/09/2024 10:32

We love dinosaurs here. What a ridiculous comment. Buy her some dinosaurs, and get her some cars and diggers while you're at it. This kind of nonsence is damaging. If your friend has daughters please also go out and get them some "boy" toys. Or even if she has a son maybe buy himma barbie. Sounds like they need some diversity with a mother like that.

I think you've worked out by now who is the very odd one out of the three of you.

Hope your DD likes her dinosaur Christmas presents.

Aimtodobetter · 28/09/2024 10:32

Your friend is the odd one - why on earth wouldn’t a 3 year old girl like dinosaurs (or indeed a much older one) - they are cool!

But you know it's not odd why would it be

Bubblybits · 28/09/2024 10:33

As a parent, you need to be more confident in your decisions. My immediate reply to that would have been “what a ridiculous thing to say”. Your job is to stand up for your child, and although this time your friend didn’t say it to her, you need to be prepared in future to shut down comments like that, not start questioning if they’re correct.
