To buy 3 year old DD dinosaurs for Christmas?

dinosaurgirll · 28/09/2024 09:39

My little girl (3) loves dinosaurs at the moment, every time I pick her up from nursery they say she's loved playing with the little toy dinosaur set and doing all the noises etc.

We are making a start on buying her Christmas presents this month and I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about getting her some toy dinosaurs as she doesn't have any at home. Friend commented that it was "funny" and "a bit odd" to buy them for a girl. And "bet it's like having a boy". I mean, she also has some Elsa dolls in her Christmas present pile, so it's a mixture of girly and less girly type presents!

Is my DD "odd" for liking dinosaurs at 3 years old?! 🤔

Don’t most kids like dinosaurs?

SallyWD · 28/09/2024 09:52

Your friend is very weird.

Talipesmum · 28/09/2024 09:52

Reassure your friend that you’re going to only buy female dinosaurs for your daughter. Just the dino mummies and daughters 😂

What makes them "for boys"??🤔

Nothing
But that will be to catch the algorithm on how Amazon works
So anyone who types "presents for boys" might get recommended the item

Clarabellasingsthisbit · 28/09/2024 09:53

A friend with some very odd views!

DGD(5) was bonkers about dinosaurs from a very early age and has already amassed quite a collection of books ,models &fluffy toys. She also has lots of clothes, including dresses, with lovely dinosaur prints.

sidsgranny · 28/09/2024 09:53

Not odd at all!

I bet she'd love the book "Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus" by Tony Mitton too!

I was born in the 50's and even MY Mum gave me dinosaur stuff for Christmas. In some ways it's worse now!

I was born in the late 50s and am from a very traditional, working class background. My parents never once made any comment about the things I was interested in (principally football, for which they cheerfully bought me boots and other kit) which these days would have the OP'S "friend" suggesting I was "weird".

I agree that things are far worse in terms of awful 'gender' stereotyping than they ever were when I was growing up.

One of the biggest discoverers of fossils was a woman!

Oh really? I'll tell my friend this 😂

Literally don't know anyone who would actually say these words to me.

perhaps our social circles are wildly different.

Exactly this.

Your friend is quite obviously a complete idiot. I couldn't be friends with someone so stupid and sexier tbh.

BurbageBrook · 28/09/2024 09:55

Sexist!!

It's annoying that you still need to delve amongst the boys wear to find some of this stuff when shopping in the supermarkets.

Oh really? I'll tell my friend this 😂

Yes, that's Mary Anning!

Allergictoironing · 28/09/2024 09:55

When I was at nursery school, in the 60's, we were asked to draw our favorite animals. I drew a T-Rex.

There's a large number of well known palaeontologists (people who study dinosaurs & related subjects) who are women. Highly respected in their field. One of the greatest ones was Mary Anning, who was responsible for a large number of "firsts" in finding previously unknown dinosaurs. Sadly being a woman, she wasn't given enough credit in her time and most of her discoveries were described in publications under the name of men - who rarely credited her with the knowledge she passed to them. She supplied museums, collectors, even crowned heads of Europe.

So your friend is not just sexist but needs education 😆

Stupid, regressive and damaging attitudes like your friend's.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/09/2024 09:56

I think the correct response is "they do allow women to learn science these days. I think they can even be paleontologists."

Buy the dinosaurs. Proper ones. Not cute , pink ones for girls. Everything Dinosaur is a good website with great models and soft toys.

My dd has wanted to be a paleontologist since she was 3 years old. She's now in year 11 and most of her clothes have dinosaurs on. she also has dinosaur bedding, bunting and fairy lights and dinosaur stuffed toys still appears on every Christmas list.

MumonabikeE5 · 28/09/2024 09:57

Toys are not gendered. Your friends are narrow minded.
dinosaurs are great
my 6yo daughter likes ballet, singing, and dinosaurs.

TickingAlongNicely · 28/09/2024 09:58

I saw pink Christmas dinosaur bedding the other day.

Shops definitely market dinosaurs to both now... as they realise it makes them money!

An interest in butterflies used to be a male hobby... now is considered "girly". What boys and girls can like is just harmful societal stereotypes.

Let kids be kids and toys be toys.

Theunamedcat · 28/09/2024 09:58

I was judged by family for buying my dd a train set she is now an adult and is a train spotter

Brickiscool · 28/09/2024 09:58

Tell Mary Anning dinosaurs are for boys.....

Ditch your friend

DampSquid · 28/09/2024 09:59

I always loved dinosaurs and I'm considerably older than 3 now! I also bought dinosaurs, toy trains and cars etc for my girls as well as the more standard "girl toys" ignore anyone who thinks it's odd 😆

Happygogoat · 28/09/2024 09:59

Your friend is bizarre.

Saw a great meme on Facebook about kids toys.

Is the toy operated by genitals? No?
This toy is suitable for boys and girls.

Is the toy operated by genitals? Yes?
This toy is not suitable for children.

Gigihadid · 28/09/2024 10:01

FFS do you actually have to ask this? Obviously your child can enjoy any toy she likes.

Not quite the case. Put in toys for girls age 4-9 (I just did) and there's a lot of pink make up cases, unicorn craft kits, pink cameras, Dance mats, the odd STEM kit (but still crystal etc focused) does nothing to balance it out.
My DD still goes on about her ELC dinosaur playy mat that I left behind when we moved house in 2004.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 28/09/2024 10:01

@Brickiscool they did tell Mary Anning that all that science and fossicking was for boys. Isn't it a shame that girls now are still facing some of the same barriers.
