To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

Natural selection at its finest. Poor children though. I don’t think it pressure from
society so much as vanity. No one intelligent will be getting this op/procedure!

Whammyammy · 26/09/2024 15:36

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Sadly her child have lost their mother, because she wanted a bigger ass.

Besides which, both men and women shave so it's a really stupid analogy.

It is not de rigeur for men to shave legs and pits

Then don't spout nonsense.

Ditto!

Is that your argument?

newyorkhotel · 26/09/2024 15:39

Her husband should have maybe talked her out of it? or tried?

I've had a nose job and my husband told me I didnt need it. I did it anyway. I did it for me because my nose was all wonky from being broken as a kid.

Many of my friends get fillers and would hit the roof if their partners told them not to. Their response would be: "my body, my money, my choice". Regardless of the rights/wrongs of the cosmetic industry, if someone is very determined to do something, they will do it. You cant blame their family for it (unless of course they were the ones who pressured them into doing it in the first place obv but largely, people do this because they want to).

It's a subject that needs to be discussed. Her husband should have maybe talked her out of it? or tried?

Nobody's "slagging her off" either.

In a way it sounds like you are blaming her husband. He might have said he wasnt keen, liked her as she was, blah blah blah. At the end of the day it´s her body, her decision.
Here in Madrid where I live a mom of two had one of these mummy makeovers/liposuction. It went terribly wrong and at autopsy it was found she had been literally stabbed during liposuction in the abdomen and died of sepsis. Surgeon was newbie on this type of procedure and not enough qualified. She left two kids, one about a year old. Her husband had tried to talk her out of it several times. She took zero notice.

The fact you've been confirming to social pressure to look a certain way but been unaware of it, doesn't make it 'tripe'.

It helps to read what someone is responding to before commenting. I didn't say that you could die from shaving, I was making a point about capitulating to social pressure.

It’s a reductive argument. We all conform to social pressure to some extent: if you’ve showered this week and are wearing clothing today, you have, too. Virtually all of us choose to conform to social pressure because we live within society, and as long as the practices we choose to conform with are broadly non-harmful, they don’t matter. It’s daft trying to equate a harmless procedure like leg shaving practiced by hundreds of millions of people around the world with dangerous and literally toxic cosmetic procedures which attract only a tiny minority of people, where it would be helpful to understand exactly what does attract then when there’s no real impetus from the majority of society towards them.

thequeenoftarts · 26/09/2024 15:42

Just nope to any of it, no boobs bigger or smaller, no ass bigger or smaller, no bloody stomach sucking, fat injections, botox, no tanning machines. Maybe I am a fool, maybe I am not, who cares either way apart from me, but I refuse to undergo un necessary surgeries or cook myself on tan beds. If people don't love or like me as I am, then that's fine, take that there door and keep on going. I'm scared enough thinking about needing a fecking colonoscopy done for health reasons, never mind to look better. No judgement on anyone who does these things, none at all, this is just my take on me.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 15:42

To those that want fillers etc., banned, where do we end?

Do we ban makeup? Waxing, shaving, hair removal, getting our nails done, hair dye, fake tan, nice clothes?

To some extent everything will be "conforming". It's terribly tragic that this happened to this mum, but people get plastic surgery every day and don't die.

Bollocks to that - I shave because I feel more comfortable. I don't remove hair from my lady bits. Entirely my choice. At my age I don't give a stuff about societal pressure.

Your views are interesting given your absorption with the Royal Family, who are all about image.

Runnerinthenight · 26/09/2024 15:43

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 15:20

@Runnerinthenight I've already had this discussion, apparently I only shave my legs (that are very rarely on display) for men

It's utter tosh @itwasnevermine! I'm in my early 60s, been married since God was a little boy, and I have no interest in displaying any part of my anatomy for men!

I have my legs waxed FOR ME because I don't like my legs hairy! End of! I don't even have that much leg hair after years of waxing and getting older and I doubt anyone would even notice if I didn't bother, except me!!

It's a pathetic attempt to judge women, as if though we don't know our own minds!

DadJoke · 26/09/2024 15:44

There is nothing more ethical about ski diving, rock climbing, riding a motorbike, drinking alcohol or smoking. There is not likely to be a thread about a man selfishly leaving behind five kids because he died under any of those circumstances.

And pray tell, what might be the relevance of that to the price of eggs??? I'm not a member of the RF, so that the actual fuck are you on about???

How low do you have to go! Maybe try a rational argument next time instead of going all female dog.

It really helps if people follow what you're actually saying before they comment. I didn't say that shaving is dangerous. I said that people shave due to social pressure.

I was responding to someone who said that there's no such thing as social pressure and gave shaving as an example that there is in fact social pressure to look a certain way.

I could equally make the argument that there is pressure to look youthful. People spend thousands on creams and potions in order to look younger. There is an awful amount of pressure on women to look a certain way.

ginasevern · 26/09/2024 15:50

Fuck sake, anyone that thinks shaving your armpits is equivalent to pumping your body full of chemicals or going under the knife needs to grow up.

Every single medical procedure comes with risk and everyone with half a brain knows it. Every mother I've ever known who's had to have surgery prays to god they wake up afterwards. Not for themselves but for their kids.

As for societal pressure - I figure there's a pretty good mix of women on this site. How many of you feel pressured to have a Brazilian bum lift? Do you feel your husband will leave you if you don't? Do you feel your friends will judge you or that you'll be ridiculed in the supermarket or your favourite restaurant without looking like Kim Kardashian? I don't know one single woman who feels that way.

YesterdaysFuture · 26/09/2024 15:50

Judging by the man who has been arrested for this, he could very well be at risk from these cosmetic procedures.

Also a lot of men die from steroid abuse to try to get bigger muscles.

I find the argument that men will never die from cosmetic procedures a bit odd.

I think there would be if he’d gone rock climbing in bad weather or rode a motorbike at 125mph or anything else reckless.

Inslopia · 26/09/2024 15:52

It’s a tough one, on the one hand I get the immense pressure put on physical appearance but on the other why does this when you have young dc.

justasking111 · 26/09/2024 15:53

Why do women want big bums like a baboon?

Stop at fillers. Injecting shite into your bodies by someone with no medical qualifications. Its a different world to plucking or painting.

How is a glass of wine comparable to an unnecessary dangerous operation? And I would think anyone who went rock climbing in bad weather without necessary safety precautions was stupid.

Allfur · 26/09/2024 15:23

Surely shaving adds to physical discomfort, how does it make you feel more comfortable?

I wax actually. I barely feel it. Thoroughly recommend it.

Nice clothes don’t tend to have health risks. I wouldn’t ban fillers but why anyone would risk their life with young dc I have no idea.
