To think that 5 children growing up motherless because their Mum wanted cosmetic surgery is absolutely tragic *edited by MNHQ

And actually a damning indictment of the state our society and the pressure placed on women to conform to increasingly ridiculous and unattainable standards of “beauty”??

A woman in her early-30’s has just died after having a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Gloucestershire, leaving 5 children who will now grow up without their mother. She’s not even the first woman to die after this procedure, which is known to be the most dangerous cosmetic surgery procedure commonly available- just the first to die after having it done in the UK.

What the fuck is going on?? Why are women literally putting their lives on the line trying to mimic some cartoonish Kardashian aesthetic? Is it that we place so little value on our own lives or so much value on appearance? Is it that these surgeries and treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous, are now available to pretty much anybody and can be performed by people with next to no qualifications?

I feel so angry for that woman, and desperately sad for her children.

It is absolutely tragic, and says a lot about our society and the expectations on women to endure pain and to butcher themselves in order to conform to a norm. However, I do think that the title of your thread is insensitive to the individuals involved- she didn't simply "want a bigger arse", she was a victim of societal pressure, and your wording sounds like victim blaming to me.
It's all incredibly sad for all involved.

Oh please, what a load of nonsense! She was a grown adult who made a decision to have a risky procedure that would give her a bigger arse. Stupid, stupid risk to take.

Crunchymum · 26/09/2024 14:36

Sounds like she has 5 daughters. What a world they have to grow up in?

I despair having to raising daughters sometimes.

Most women would never dream of doing something so stupid.

Fevertreelover · 26/09/2024 15:12

I'm not angry for her. It was her own stupid choice and there is no pressure that I can see to do this. Everyone I know thinks it looks ridiculous. It is a societal issue in that we tolerate this kind of batshittery in the name of women's rights.

Don’t be rude, it’s unnecessary.

Then don't spout nonsense.

ARichtGoodDram · 26/09/2024 15:14

I remember the shock when Denise Henry died after botched liposuction and yet here we are nearly 20 years later and women are dying from poor quality medical conditions procedures carried out by people who put profit before safety.

It's appalling - both that women feel the need to do it and that it's possible to have it done

TinkerTiger · 26/09/2024 15:14

poppyzbrite4 · 26/09/2024 14:41

Do you shave? There's no reason for it, it's societal pressure.

Shaving is a great example of societal pressure, as the majority of women with their legs out have them shaved.

BBLs are not.

Find this thread and the unempathetic comments in poor taste to be honest

That's your prerogative. Hopefully it might give some other misguided woman food for thought.

midgetastic · 26/09/2024 15:15

Not everyone is clever - rule of thumb half are less clever than average

Are you happy for less clever people to die because of the society we have all built?

Suspect this thread will go poof there is no much nastiness

GiddyNavyJoker · 26/09/2024 15:15

Function · 26/09/2024 14:18

Sure - but this thread is about women. Men take up enough airspace elsewhere.

Why did you mention men in the first place then? SMH.

Bollocks to that - I shave because I feel more comfortable. I don't remove hair from my lady bits. Entirely my choice. At my age I don't give a stuff about societal pressure.

No, but I know two blokes who went climbing together in a recent storm, both of them died because they were so stupid to carry on and should have turned back, but their ego stopped them so they left a total of five children without a dad.
I also know blokes who have been stupid on the road and died.

I think some people just make bad decisions and die as a result. It's tragic but really on reflection I think "stupid decisions that leave you dead" affects men far worse than women!

Indeed.

Happii · 26/09/2024 15:18

Function · 26/09/2024 14:14

Sure - but men don’t seem to be dying from BBLs in the same way. Why’s that?

The vast vast vast majority of women aren't dying from it either. Sometimes people, including women, make stupid choices. Yes there's societal pressure to look good, there's also personal responsibility.

Good point. And those men often put other people in danger because then they need to be rescued.

Which 'norm' are you referring to? Utter twaddle. She made a choice, if she did 30 seconds of research she would have known the dangers.

Strangely I don't know one man who finds the Kardashian arse attractive, same with lip fillers and botox. I a man and have a wide circle of friends from 22 to 75....whenever it comes up we all agree it's not an attractive look.
Sadly it's the cosmetics industry and women's own insecurities putting them at risk

I also agree. I have asked my male friends and colleagues their opinions on this stuff before and the overwhelming response is- they hate the way it looks.

I have yet to come across a single man who says their dream is meeting a woman who has had a bum enhancement or inflated lips. Quite the contrary, they are vocally against it. I dont know where this idea comes from that it's men encouraging women to get this stuff done, it isnt. It's women who have bought into this idea from social media that it attracts men when in reality it's off-putting to them.

itwasnevermine · 26/09/2024 15:20

@Runnerinthenight I've already had this discussion, apparently I only shave my legs (that are very rarely on display) for men

Lentilweaver · 26/09/2024 15:21

Yes, of course the majority of women aren't getting BBLs. Still concerned by the increase in fillers and such like. Women of a certain demographic have all started to look like plastic dolls.

Anonym00se · 26/09/2024 15:21

DadJoke · 26/09/2024 15:05

It's a 1/4000 chance of death. People take that level of risk for sports all the time - you just judge this choice as morally less worthy. Do you get as angry at people who drink?

Which sports have a 1:4,000 risk of death? Even sky diving is less than 1:100,000. I can imagine going for a run or playing tennis is anywhere near as risky.

I know someone who left a toddler fatherless after mountaineering in the Himilayas. I think that was equally selfish.

MorrisZapp · 26/09/2024 15:23

So, so tragic. I had a breast reduction operation last year done by a leading surgeon in the NHS (op was private of course). I felt entirely safe throughout and would not have done it if I thought there was a meaningful risk of death.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 26/09/2024 15:23

Knew that was coming. To highlight that this particular ‘stupid choice’ seems to be the preserve of women and provoke thought as to why that may be. Not to put men and their woes front and centre. That’s the difference.

//

And that's exactly how I read your initial post - gobsmacked other posters can't see that point. It's not about who is dying prematurely most but why this path is one women follow more.

Male suicide is a worthy discussion and deserves its own thread.

I’m trying to give poor Alice Webb the benefit that she didn’t make her decision in a vacuum.

I think people are on this thread are either very naive or deliberately obtuse on the demands of society on women.

inamarina · 26/09/2024 15:23

HotSource · 26/09/2024 14:36

Huge sympathy to the woman’s family, but really, despite some popular culture celebration of the look, most of us manage NOT to take expensive risks or make physical modifications to our bodies.

Individuals have to bear responsibility for this. Those who make money from it, those who choose to take the risk.

Unlike surgery and procedures designed to support weight loss this doesn’t even have any health benefits.

I agree. I think there should be better education and possibly more regulations when it comes to procedures like this, but I don’t think it’s the „society“ that pressures women into such extreme bodily modifications.
I mean, there are plenty of women walking around without having had any surgery done.
I see plenty of „normal“ looking women. The fact that there’s currently a slim/ thick or whatever trend on social media doesn’t mean that that’s how „society“ demands you should look.

Surely shaving adds to physical discomfort, how does it make you feel more comfortable?

Runnerinthenight · 26/09/2024 15:25

poppyzbrite4 · 26/09/2024 14:57

Because you were brought up in a society where shaving is a social norm. That's social pressure to look a certain way. You're denying the concept of social pressure while conforming to it. And don't make up excuses about how it was a personal choice you just happened to discover one day; it's expected that you'll shave and you capitulated.

That's utter tripe.

Even if it wasn't - what of it? Nobody ever died at the hands of Mr Bic or Miss Immac!!!
